Root Facebook Contact Sync?

Roggie

Newbie
Both 4G LTE's I've had have had this same issue. I can sync the contacts for the first time trying with the phone, but I can never update the sync. If I unsync and try to resync, it won't sync and I'll be without those I have. I'm running the stock ROM using the Regaw 1 click program to root my phone.

sounds to me that there is something on your end causing the issue. Hard to say what it could be have you cleared caches before syncing?

I've tried clearing them. Has no effect. I have no problems syncing anything else, including the Facebook live feed and calendar.

Just tried clearing the davlik cache (hadn't done that) to no avail.

have you tried clearing your contacts storage data? I do that when my pictures get janky, then possibly try clearing your facebook data too, then reboot and sign back into facebook and see if that forces it to resync

I haven't tried that. Does that actually delete the contacts, or just clear out the cached data for them?

That will clear all the data from it as far as I can tell. Very weird that it won't sync. Have you gone into the Facebook settings and changed the sync interval?

Check that and see if its set to never update.

Also might want to try a PRL and Data profile update.

I tried both of the updates just now and tried changing the sync interval.

If I go into the actual accounts/sync in the settings, it shows my calendar and live feed are synced, but if I look at the contacts, it is still at the original date. The refresh symbol will spin like it's updating then stop. It's giving me a message now that sync is currently unavailable and will resume shortly, yet all other accounts sync perfectly.

I've noticed that in order to get everything synced properly, it's best to sign into one account at a time initially. so what I do is wipe storage data, wipe facebook data, uncheck sync for facebook, reboot, let google repopulate its contacts completely, then resign into facebook and tell it to sync all.

if that doesn't work, ummm, maybe try uninstalling, reboot, reinstalling facebook?

I was going to suggest the same thing, good call. :)

If that doesn't work, you may need to reflash your Rom. :(

I tried something very similar to this. I wiped contact storage data, uninstalling Facebook updates, disabling Facebook and Facebook for HTC Sense, enabling both of them, then trying to sync again. It appears to be working, as after a couple of minutes my contact "refresh" sign is still spinning instead of the usual 5-10 second spin then stopping and saying sync is unavailable.

It's still currently syncing, so I'm not 100% sure if it worked, but I'll be sure to update this.

I'm hoping I don't have to flash a ROM onto it since I'm still using the stock rom and never flashed it.

Edit: After 8 minutes of syncing, I'm back to the dreaded locked up, unable to sync message.

Edit 2: After realizing, in my rush, that I never rebooted my phone, I tried it all over again with a reboot after disabling Facebook and deleting my contact storage, and it seems to be working. My Facebook contacts are all showing up slowly but surely.

wtf?

I'm at a loss. as granite said, it may be time to do a full wipe and reflash your rom

Yeah. I was saying that for forever, but your idea gave me an idea to try that worked. So I have to thank you for the help, along with the other suggestions. Shouldn't be nearly as complicated as it is, but I'll take it over nothing.

I wiped contact storage data, uninstalling Facebook updates, disabling Facebook and Facebook for HTC Sense, rebooting the phone, enabling both of them, allowing Google to resync my contacts, then logging into Facebook and trying to sync again.

I've done a little more research on this since that fix worked (by research, I mean accidentally logging out of Facebook and losing the sync).

I did a factory reset this morning then synced everything. All worked perfectly. After restoring all my apps and system settings, the sync setting didn't work. There's some app on my end (or system setting) that's blocking the sync for Facebook and Twitter contacts, as I found out this morning.

I'm not sure what the app is, but if I find out, I will make sure to post it.

I wonder if it has something to do with having to re-authorize the htc permissions to access facebook/twitter. I know that when you wipe your data/do a factory reset when jumping to a new rom, titanium backup will tell you that your android ID has changed and says this might affect some apps...I have no idea if this is the same thing or not, but it makes sense in my head

It's possible, but this same thing also happened on my first LTE (before I cracked the screen) but never when I had zero apps on it. So I'm thinking it might just be an app permission thing where it's conflicting with sync and not allowing it to work.

But I'm not a genius on smartphones, so I could be wrong.

Just to update on this: I was using a .edu email for my Facebook when I was unable to sync. I just tried changing from that account to a hotmail account, and sync instantly worked. I have no idea if this was just luck of first sync or an actual fix, but it appears to have fixed the no sync issue.
