Root Stuck in Cyanogenmod Update

Good evening - I have had CyanogenMod on my phone for nearly a year, and decided today to update to the latest stable version, 7.2. I used Titanium Pro to do a backup, and ROM Manager for the actual update, following the steps given at the HTC Evo 4G: Full Update Guide - CyanogenMod Wiki

The only thing I did not do according to the wiki was that at step 4 of the Recovery Process, I did not check "Wipe Data and Cache," choosing "Wipe Dalvik Cache" instead.

Everything seemed to go well until the very end. After the installation of CyanogenMod, the phone rebooted and got stuck at the "HTC EVO 4G" splash screen - it has been there for more than 30 mins.

Any suggestions?

I would pull battery, boot into recovery via bootloader, then flash rom from recovery. Don't use rom manager, it is buggy. (Make sure rom is on sd card.)
Wipe all except sd card 3 times then re flash rom.

Edit: this thread should be moved to "All things root" forum" A guide or mod will do that for you.

Sorry, no prob...
After you pull battery, wait a few seconds. Then while holding the volume down button, press power. This will bring you to the bootloader screen (btw, post what it printed there, I'm curious). So, in bootloader, you should see the option to highlight recovery. Scroll to that using volume up/down buttons. Press the power button to select recovery. You will then boot into recovery. (Also curious to know what recovery you have). Make sure you have your rom of choice on sd card!
In recovery, you should have an option to wipe. Select wipe and more options should come up as to what to wipe... Wipe everything EXCEPT SD CARD. Wipe 3 times. Then back out of wipe to an option to flash zip from sd card. Select that and find your rom.zip. Highlight the rom.zip and select it to flash.
If you do not have rom on sd card, then while in recovery, plug phone into computer, there should be an option to "enable usb", or "enable mass storage", or "toggle ms usb". Select that. Then transfer rom from computer to sd card. After the transfer, click on the "enable usb" again to unmount phone. Unplug phone. You will then have your rom on sd card to flash.
Just make sure wherever you got rom from, you read the o.p. for any additional flashing intructions, or other things that need to be flashed in conjunction with rom, perhaps things as gapps etc.:D
Proper wiping is key for a nice rom flash.
After all is said and done, get rid of Rom Manager.
Also, if your recovery is anything other than Amon Ra or Smelkus recovery, change it. We can do that later.

One of 2 ways:
1. plug phone into computer, mount phone as disk drive, and what pull up the drive that your phone is such as e: or d: or f: and see if its there or, an easier way--
2. if you have a file browser on your phone such as es file exlplorer or Astro file explorer, click on that app and it will list all files on your sd card.;)

Edit: your hboot is the same as mine! And you are good to go. s-off is nice!

- wipe cache partition
- install zip from sdcard
- backup and restore
- mounts and storage
- advanced
- power off

From this screen, how do I make sure I have my rom of choice on my SD card?
 
actually it is install .zip from sd card. this option is what you will use to flash a rom. you will then go to a screen that lists the file and folders that are on the sd card. not sure why cwm folks choose use the term "install" instead of "flash".

and to make sure that it is on the card, as long as you move the file onto the card and you see the file on the card on your computer you should be fine.

personally i would recommend that you switch recoveries to amon ra2.3. cwm just does not wipe very well and has been known to create more issues then it is worth. also you will not be able to flash certain files as cwm only supports certain scripts(which instructs how the recovery will flash the file). with amon ra2.3 you will not have that problem. you can flash any file with no issues. so if you like we can help you with that. i would go here first: http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...ooting-dummies-guide-gingerbread-edition.html and go to the switching recoveries section for instructions.
 
When I selected "apply update from sdcard," it took me to a screen that said this:

I selected "Yes - Install /sdcard/update.zip", and this happened:

-- Install from sdcard...
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
E:Can't open /sdcard/update.zip
(No such file or directory)
Installation aborted.
 
yeah that is not what you want. to see the files on the sd card and see if your recivery sees it. select install from sd card this option should show you the files on the sd card that you can flash.

the option you just selected is for accepting an ota. luckily you did not have the ota file on your card. do not select that option EVER!!!!.

not sure why the cwm team have that function in recovery. but like i said earlier amon ra 2.3 recovery is soooooo much better.
 
Just to be clear: I am still at "Installation aborted," awaiting further instructions/suggestions, because I have now have no idea what has gone wrong, or why, or what to do next. No idea. None.

nothing is wrong. you will get that whenever you select that option in recovery unless you have the ota downloaded onto your phone then you cab have cwm flash it for you. if not then it will not see the file and abort it. this is normal.

are you on the main screen? do you have the rom of your choice on the card? have you made a nandroid backup yet? you will need to do that before flashing another rom, just in case something happens you can go back to a previous point.

if you have made a nandroid backup then you can select install .zip from sd card to flash your rom.

to be honest with you i would stop and reboot your phone and read this guide here:http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...ooting-dummies-guide-gingerbread-edition.html. skip the rooting process and go to the after root section. it has info on how to make nandroid backups, how to switch recoveries and even how to flash roms.

Anyway, I went back to the screen described in post #8, selected "install zip from sdcard," and now see this:

Apply update from .zip file on SD card

- choose zip from sdcard
- apply /sdcard/update.zip
- toggle signature verification
- toggle script asserts
- +++++Go Back+++++

Based on what's been said, I assume my next move is to select "choose zip from sdcard."

Correct?

select go back to get to the main menu then you can select install .zip from sd card.

No, that's the superuser zip, not the rom.
That long list of folders you say came up, folders such as..???
Were any files name Cyanogenmod 7.something.zip?? (the rom zip)?
 
The folders begin with

- 2Player/
- AlarmClockXtreme/
- Aldiko/
- Android/
- ApnBackupRestore/

...basically, the system/app folders I have had all along.
The superuser zip is the only zip listed.
There is no folder or file with "Cyanogenmod" in its name

o.k..no problem, then do this.
Download your rom of choice and any gapps etc to your computer.
Transfer those to your sd card.
Do you have a file explorer such as Astro, or ES File explorer?
Those 2, among many, are apps from the market designed to see files on your sd card. With those you can verify if you have the rom on your sd card without plugging phone into computer.;)

Edit: I forgot you were stuck at the splash screen, so right now, a file explorer would do you no good.
 
Progress: It occurred that I could pull the SD card, plug it into my computer (I have an SD/microSD adapter) and put the cyanogenmod zip on it. So I did.

Now, finally, I am back to Mikestony's second post, and have confirmed that I have the rom zip on my SD card. The next thing you say to do is to wipe everything except the SD card, three times. Question: which item on ClockworkMod's home screen do I select?

I dont think so, I think it will give you more options. However, if you want, backup sd card to computer.
Then choose data/factory reset.
Then wipe cache partition.
I would wipe 3 times.
Check first if you can find the rom on sd card. Click on install zip from sd card, you can go back after you find it.
