Got $10 more! Wallet

I activated Wallet on my Nexus 7 and got 10 more dollars! Not sure where I will use them, though. I don't really see myself trying to pay with my tablet lol... that would look silly!

I agree that it would look silly. I was hoping that the prepaid card balance would show up on my Gnex since it's a cloud service now. No luck though, anyone experience different? Guess we can just spend it online on youtube or the play store.

Edit: Looks like the prepaid card can only be used via tap and pay.

It took me about 3 tries to successfully use the tablet to pay for something (McDonald's finally worked, so google bought me lunch). The tablet definitely seems silly to use, but I can't actually imagine a phone being much less silly. It is still more work to unlock the pin code and tap the phone than to just swipe a credit card. I can't see NFC purchases going anywhere unless vending machines start cropping up that accept NFC for when you are out of change, but do have your phone.

A friend of mine consults with a large point of sale systems company and he says nfc is not gonna fly. We tried android phone to my n7 and it almost worked once sending between them.

This is pretty much my experience most of the time. This form of payment tends to be used mostly at places where I'd be spending less than the minimum amount where a signature is required. It's definitely faster and less of a hassle to swipe my card than prep my phone, tap it and pray that it works. Yet, for some reason I keep loading money onto the prepaid card. Fortunately with the new update, I won't have to do that anymore.

I can see this as being very close to being true for the time being.

Wait so you can't spend it on google play?

Wow haha, that's the only thing that I would even consider spending it on, unless my college got some new fancy vending machines that took it, that way I could impress all of the kids with my 'virtual wallet'.

There are vending machines that take nfc payments, you may not have any around you.

Is it really that much of a hassle, tho? You have to take your wallet out, and take your card out, and swipe it- wouldn't taking the phone out, unlocking the pin and tapping it be just as much trouble?

It might be comparable if it worked all the time, but swiping a card seems to work first time about 90 to 95% of the time, where the tablet only worked about 30% of the time. Given that, the card is definitely simpler, and if it is a credit card I don't have to type a PIN code or sign anything for small purchases which makes the card a definite winner compared to NFC.

My 5 year old son bought us lunch at McDonald's with his N7. You should have seen the cashier's face. And no, he didn't look dumb at all.:D

is nfc hackable ? what if in a year or so.. you gonna stand in line waiting to pay for your goodies and someone would stand right behind you with somekinda wireless interceptor device which will transfer your money to it. How do you cash out google wallet?

You have to have the app open, enter your pin, and physically tap the tablet to the reader, so it would be pretty difficult for someone to intercept. You cannot cash out the free $10, you have to spend it. As far as lost or stolen devices you can remotely wipe it from the wallet web site.

I'm sure my next phone will have NFC, and I can assure you that I will use it all the time. Not sure why some people complain about it being to hard to do lol.

Because sometimes, it just doesn't work....and it isn't the terminal or network...it's definitely the Wallet app. Had it happen yet again tonight. Used it to buy some food. Went back up a bit later to get dessert. Same restaurant. Same terminal. Same device. Same card. Spinning wheel of "I'm gonna make you look like a crazy person tapping your phone to a credit card terminal". And this is why Wallet will fail. Who only wants to be able to access their money some of the time?!? No, my physical cards work, every single time.

Don't you need a wifi connection to run the app?

I would just like to transfer the $10 from my N7 to my Gnex. Has anyone figure out how to do that?

Just to verify, will I get another $10 for signing up, even if I use the same account details as my GNex?
