Official EVO Rumors and Speculation thread

Hello everyone, i've been browsing around this forum since a couple of weeks before the announcement of the EVO and i seriously cant wait for this device to be released.

I really want it now, but i'm kind of glad it's coming out until the summer thats when i can upgrade my phone since i was an early adopter of the palm pre. I have a blackberry tour right now and i cant wait to switch to a phone with such specs like the EVO.

yes there are several articles out now that have said that 4G will NOT cost more, I am too tired to refer you to specific posts but im sure someone will get that info to you.

I'm just referring to what Dan Hesse himself said today in his keynote. I was watching it streaming live, and he very clearly compared 4g vs. 3g to cable tv and hi def channels. He said that the hi def channels are a great perk, but that the cable company charges extra for them, and then said that the 4g data improvements are a perk thrown in for free. However later he was talking about how in the distant future your data plan price will be based on how many gigabytes of data you use per month so things will change eventually.

I wish there was a recording of the stream or a transcript so we can hold him to what he said and sue for false advertising if they do try to do an additional $10 4g surcharge or something when the phone's released...
Thanks a lot guys. Sounds like fantastic news to me if I'm able to hold onto my everything data plan.

I had another question regarding the arrow keys on the HTC Evo. I have this strange feeling that I'm not gonna like having those there in portrait mode. They seem to look alright in landscape but goofy (in my opinion) in portrait. Soo my question is that I know on Android you can change the keyboards out and I'm assuming that you can use the regular sense keyboard from let's say a desire but what do you think I would lose by doing that?? Hypothetically speaking of course.

Welcome bestphonever :) Those arrow keys replace the trackball or trackpad found on other HTC devices. I'm sure you're already aware of that. I personally like the idea. After watching the first video in post #1, I get the feeling that HTC likes to go with ideas that are the most popular in their company. Someone else made a comment in another thread that the arrow keys are kinda ugly, probably because they're so large. I don't have a problem with that either, mostly because real small keys might be hard to operate. My guess is that you'll get used to the arrow keys and you'll like them.

I don't know that you'll be able to switch keyboards, but I suppose it's possible with some kind of setting change. After the Nexus One was released, a lot of people were saying they wished the N1 had the HTC keyboard, which most were claiming was better, instead of the native one that came with it.

Guess you can't please everyone.

I'm honestly fine for the most part even with my Pre which apparently has terrible battery life. I charge it overnight and then take it to work. Usually by 8 or 9 pm I have anywhere from 10-50% left depending on how much I used it. When I first got it and was constantly screwing around on it, I just kept my USB/MicroUSB plugged into my desk computer and whenever I sat down at my desk I would plug the phone in. That way whenever I got up to go do something I was topped off.

Until battery tech dramatically improves, this will be an issue with big touch screen phones with 2g/3g/4g/gps/bt/wifi radios. I just keep it topped off in the car and at the desk as well as overnight. If I really need it a lot and know I won't be near a charger, I bring a spare battery that I charged ahead of time.

Not really a fair comparison (phones)when you consider everything. I understand many will plug in here and there to have this do it all type phone. I am already making plans myself.

No other smartphone comes close to the EVO demands on batt. and the reviews will prove that after it's released.

The more I research, I wonder if it will last 2 hr. using all features. For example: wifi, bluetooth, apps running and uploading / downloading info from other devices. While sending pictures / data to others from the field. Not everybody works near power outlets and plugging in car charger for 30 min. here and there is hard on a $80 batt.

This is the price we pay when buying the latest / greatest gadgets, right...

Thanks for the welcome!! Yeah I know they wanted to add the buttons as a means to compensate for the trackball/trackpad loss but personally I'm not to found of the size and placement. As far I know the trackball helped navigate cursor placement which is something I can live without, I know this because I do live without it on my pre. I guess my question is dos the trackball serve another purpose I'm missing? I haven't owned or used Android for a significant amount of time to know.

Here is my take. If I'm on Verizon or At&t and my contract is up between tomorrow and summer. I'm not renewing with them, so I can get this BEAST.

Sorry, I'm not "down" on Sprint. They are by far, imo, the best. Just REALLY BUMMED that this phone isn't going to drop til like June. Just sayin

Well I was just at a T Mobile store checking out the HD2 to get an idea what the Supersonic will be like.

First of all, I called ahead to ask if they had one to check out, and when I got there the two people working started fighting over who would get the commission when they sold it to me, since he talked to me on the phone, and she was helping me at the counter. I just tuned it out and played with the phone, and left when I was done.

I was really impressed with the form factor overall, especially the thinness of the bezel, with some noted personal observations being that for me the screen could be even bigger, like up to 5" as long as the bezel stays thin, and it would still be pocketable for me. Also I would give up a few more millimeters of thickness for a slideout/tilting keyboard like the TouchPro2's. I am probably in the minority here, but I don't mind having a huge phone and I suck with on screen keyboards. So as awesome as the Supersonic will be to use, I can see that it won't be the last phone I ever own because if they release the same thing with a keyboard or bigger screen, I'll sell the SS and switch. It's smart for them to start with the slate style for their first devices of this class though, because I think the vast majority prefers thinness over a hard keyboard. Another note is that the screen doesn't have a fingerprint proof coating like the Hero, but that doesn't bother me. I guess that's about it, since the hardware has such a minimalist external design, there's not much else that handling an hd2 can tell you about the supersonic experience because of the different OS and feature/application set.

I will definitely be at a Sprint store on day one to get the Supersonic!

Just checked spec form sprint site, and here are items, in red, that got me excited the most in order of priority:

1) 4.3” capacitive display with pinch-to-zoom and tactile feedback
2) 3G/4G Mobile Hotspot capability
3) 4G data speeds (WiMAX) – peak download:10 Mbps; average download speeds of 3-6 Mbps.

My TP2 3G max out at 1.5Mbps, average 1Mbps, and somtime 800kbps

Together, these features make web browsing on EVO or Laptop much better.

Dont know if it has been my month long obsession now with the SUpersonic/EVo, or if it just started, but I just now for the first time noticed an HTC commercial for the HD2. It touted the 4.3 inch screen and that was really it. How long has the HD2 been out? Just thought the timing was interesting, but maybe I just never payed enough attention? If it is new, im guessing the EVO announcement may have spurned it?

they're new commercials. HD2 came out yesterday

Wow I didn't notice the tactile feedback. Do any other phones have that? So when you type you can actually feel a 'click'??

The tactile feedback is more so a quick "vibrate" of the internal motor not so much a "click". The droid has it and im sure other phones with touch screen kb have it too.

For those of you who have an android device already, I thought there were several keyboards available from the market, for free or a couple bucks, that have differing features and layouts? Also if you root the device can't you install any keyboard from other roms/devices? I'm used to windows mobile where you can change any aspect of the phone that you can imagine thanks to the geniuses at xda-developers.

Actually, the HTC HD2 was released last November or December in Europe and it's just now coming here in the US to T-Mobile. I thought it was an awesome phone when I read all the reviews and watched all the videos last fall, but it's WinMo and that killed it for me. During that same period of time people were asking for the HD2 to be ported over to Android and wallah, we have the HTC EVO 4G and it's even better than the HD2.

I passed by a T-Mobile store today and checked out the HD2 just to have a taste of what the Evo will be like... BIG mistake on my part!

The screen was gorgeous, the screen was very responsive, it was thin, the Transformers trailer loaded onto it was beautiful... I could go on and on.

It's now making the wait for the Evo that much harder knowing how much I loved the look and feel of the HD2.

Wi-Fi Charging is an option...BUT you still have to carry extra stuff ( chargers ) around to charge your portable wireless device. A extra batt. would be easier / smaller than this item and many other options like it.

How many times have you been talking on your phone and told someone my batt. is going dead, I will have to call you back later ? The batt. is one of the most import items of any portable device. If this happens every time you use your phone because the batt. won't keep up with all the new toys added... What's the point ?

*cough*

It's in everyones power to be prepared :) When I run a chat client at work to talk to my gal on my Hero, it will suck battery life. But that doesn't worry me, know why? Because I'm super anal about being prepared for every situation that might inconvenience me.

To illustrate, this is my geek "man-purse" that easily fits into any inside jacket pocket. My hand and a blu-ray are next to it for size comparison:

Contents of said man-purse are things that I get really annoyed about when I don't have them right when I want them:

sc848o.jpg

Top row: (for sake of charging a low battery) AC adapter, 4" USB cord, Jawbone2 bluetooth, alcohol toilette to clean a dirty screen, 2gig memory stick.
Bottom row: Small pen, pill container containing aleve/zyrtec/sudafed, carmex, moisturizer (im afflicted with dry skin which is amazing since I live in houston and its built on a swamp next to a gulf), Skullcandy headphones, and 35 cents to make an emergency call.

I could easily slide in a spare battery there if I wanted but I know that as long as I'm near a power outlet, my phone will have life :)

I'm pretty interested in this phone, but what's with Sprint's coverage map? There's an awful lot of "roaming" and "no service" areas. I assume that the "roaming" is no issue if you have the 99.99 "everything" plan, but all of that "no coverage" area concerns me.

Yea I too have been watching reviews of the HD2 for since last year. I was assuming he was talking about the commercials being aired here in the US. I guess thats a dangerous assumption on an internet forum haha

Ditto. I actually LOVE the sense UI on WM 6.5. I think the interface is just about perfect. I love the animated weather, and the three huge buttons on the front. I love how sharp and square everything is, versus androids "bubbly" appearance. I like the sense UI on the Evo 4G, but in reality the perfect UI to me is WM 6.5. The downsides that kill it are the fact that its tmobile, and not having the androidmarket, which is sure to explode
