Root [CDMA] What's the worse that can happen?

My phone is rooted and I'm currently using clean rom. But, I'm interested in getting a good ics rom and for some reason half of them don't work. I just get stuck in a boot loop. The one that does work looks and feels identical to clean rom just with a different look.

The only reason I rooted my phone is to use the wireless tether, which I almost never use. So my question is: If I update to the stock rom through my phone update, other than I lose root, what else can happen? Will it brick my phone? If I only lose root, I'll go for it and re-root it later.

Bricked no but you'll lose root, possible re locked bootloader and your hboot will become 1.58

From what I understand you will lose root but I don't know if it will work. Your phone most likely won't accept the update I would think..... There is a safer way to do it...

Download this: ics ruu

If you are s-off just run it and connect your phone to the computer.

If you are s-on then relock your bootloader first using the fastboot command
"fastboot oem lock" without quotation marks. Then just run the ruu with phone connected.

This will return you to stock ICS.

Thanks for that couldn't find to quote exact info, some have success stories while on root while some doesn't because they are too damn stubborn to either unroot or run the ruu before the update, I personally rather just keep running a custom ics aosp. Sure beats the hell out of stock sense ics

The awesome thing is its really easy to root that if you don't want to be stock. Just unlock bootloader using the code you already have. Flash recovery. Flash supersu patch. Then you are rooted stock Ics.
 
Thanks for all the replies. How do I know if I'm s-off or on? Perhaps this is the problem I'm having running some of these custom roms? I could only get ZR3D rom to work in the A version.
 
Well you could only get s-off by doing some extra steps that you would definitely know if you did. But you can check by booting into your bootloader. Do a battery pull then hold volume down + power button. On that screen it will say either s-on or s-off. If you just want stock Ics my above instructions should get you there. What's your ultimate goal? If you go stock Ics I will gladly help you root it if you decide to and have any questions.

What hboot version do have? You can also see that info on the same Page as the s-on or off

If you rooted gingerbread then that is the problem with flashing Ics roms. You will only be able to flash ics roms built around gb.

I just noticed that your devices says you have a hero. Can you flash the same roms for hero and evo 3d?
 
You can also now simply flash a latest stock rooted ROM.

I am s-on and am have hboot 1.50. I no longer have the hero and do have an Evo 3d and I did root the gingerbread. My ultimate goal is to have to upgrade to an actual ics version and have it rooted so I can maintain my ability to tether without getting soaked for it. BTW, I really appreciate all your help.

I am out of town and not near my PC, sent a PM to Mahalocat, and he will tell you exactly how to upgrade to the latest stock rooted ROM.

dangit! I am trying the oem lock, and from the cmd prompt I get the message,"waiting for device". I have usb debugging clicked and don't understand why I can't access the phone from prompt, when I was just doing it yesterday.
 
I got it to relock and am downloading ruu right now. Hopefully this works and then I can re-root from there.

Alrighty, per James's instructions I am now ics stock. I guess the next step is to re-root...Waiting on next step from James.

No problem! It should work. I did the same exact thing. And it will be super easy to gain root access again. I'll go snag a link to the supersu patch right now.

SuperSU patch

The reason you weren't able to flash ics roms is because gb and Ics have different base versions. The rom you did flash is based off of gb so it worked. Running the ruu is basically just like taking the ota except safe for rooted users. It will update your baseware to ics then install a factory version of ics. Once you root ics you could then flash any ics rom you want btw. But no gb roms.
 
Oh you posted while I was editing! First step is to unlock your bootloader again. You can use the unlock code you already got from last time if you still have it!

Then download 4ext recovery from the play store. Within the app you will flash a recovery.

Then download supersu that I posted above. Put that on your sd card. Open 4ext recovery app and click on recovery. Then choose install zip from sd card. Select that zip file on your sd card. When promted check to wipe cache and dalvik cache. Once it's done and booted back up you should be rooted..

That's it!

I got my phone re-rooted. That 4ext recovery didn't work for me, but I used the cmd line to get into recovery and tried a two different roms but both give my wi-fi an error. What rom are you using?
 
That's odd that 4ext recovery wouldn't work. Did you have it flash the recovery from within the app? I am using 4ext recovery. Currently I'm on Zred GT rom for gingerbread because I went back to gingerbread after going to ICS. I upgraded to ICS in the same way that I gave you instructions.

The instructions that I gave you was to just root stock ICS. So you were able to flash supersu to your phone?

What recovery are you using now?

Are you flashing ICS based roms? Like I said before, now that you are ICS you can't use roms based around GB.

Some roms do have issues such as wifi not working. If you read through all the features etc on a rom page, there is usually a section called "known issues" where they list problems like that.

I thought you wanted stock ICS with superuser access?
 
You know what. I should have explained 4ext a little better. Before using you need to choose "Online Insall | Upgrade" This is where it takes you through the little setup and will flash the recovery once selected. Then after all that you go to the recovery menu and install zip from sd card etc.....
