Root Another slow speeds thread

My4ev0

Newbie
I hope I posted in the right area if not mods please move. Have my HTC EVO 4g for about 2 years now. I'm not a "heavy" user with my phone just the gps, phone, and occasional video.

Ping 259ms
Download 38kbps
Upload 138 kbps

Is there anything I can do fix this? I tried some of the suggestions browsing however I am not that "techie" when it comes to phones.

Thanks.

Hello there and welcome to AF!!
Have you tried to update your prl and profile?
Are these speeds you posted generally the same in different locations?
How long have these low speeds been going on?
Perhaps tower issues are going on like they have by me?

Hello Mikestony, thank you for the warm welcome!

Yes I updated the prl and profile.

It varies sometimes I can get up to 60kbps other times its lower like 17kbps

I'll be honest I am not sure, but I can remember for as long as I had it the speeds were less than pleasing.

Could be.

Well, it could be just the area you are in combined with Sprint's "less than pleasing" tower connections.
Could possibly call Sprint and they could re-provision your phone...

Signal issues are generally out of our control as far as the phone's hardware and/or towers.
Now, Sprint might sent you an Airrave for home use for better signal.
They sent one to our business for free....(it turned out quite lousy), but other people have had better luck.
However, that Airrave wont help you on the road or elsewhere (obviously):(
I would suggest calling Sprint and telling them what's up and they might tell you if a tower is crappy in your area.
I know Sprint has been working on the towers here and my signal sucked.
I happened to be rooted and switched to a Verizon prl and signal has improved greatly for me.
Long reply, I know, sorry....

Well my phone is rooted as well ( I didn't do it) so I don't think contacting sprint would be an option or so I'm told.

Could be the towers but others around me get pretty decent signal. Even when I get full bars the data speeds are not all that great....

Well, if you are on a sense rom, you could contact Sprint, due to that fact that sense roms are able to utilize the ## codes they might have you do.
Do you know what rom you are on?

Ok build is this 3.70.651.1
Well, that's your software version, which is older.
How do you know you are rooted? Just asking is all....not doubting you.:p
Sometimes when you reboot your phone, the name of the rom comes up in the splash screen or the bootanimation depending on what was installed by someone else.
It could be that you are rooted on a stock rom.
I just wonder how else you could find out what rom you are on.

Edit: what else does it say on the screen in "menu/settings/about phone"?

Ya, know, if we can also have you post your bootloader screen (pull battery, wait 30 seconds, put battery back in, push power WHILE holding volume down button)
The screen that comes up is your bootloader screen. Just post the info there.
Perhaps from there we can get you to another rom, or possibly update your radios!!
(Thanks to Dustwun for that tip!!)

ok so i moved your thread to the root section as i see that is what the discussion is headed to.

once you can post what you see in the bootloader as described by mikey, we can then find out what radios you are on.

judging by your software version you might have old radios. upgrading your radios may or may not help.

so post back with your hboot and radio(baseband) then we can go from there.

This was the information I was given per instruction. No worries Mikey I guy I used to work with either rooted or bricked my phone. ( If these are the same thing I apologize don't know the technical terms ) He did something to my phone that allowed me to have wireless tether.

I tried numerous times to update my phone since I had it but it keeps failing after the restart. I consorted with another "phone tech" and was told the updates don't matter so I just left it. Despite my better judgement.

Thank you for the help.

Well, it appears to me that your radios are not the current ones but not that old either....so instead of switching radios, which may or may not help, I just wonder if the rom you are on is hindering your ability to update prl/profile.
Updating prl or profile cannot be done when on an AOSP rom, which may be the case.
Updating the prl/profile CAN be done on a sense rom.
It also is nice to see that you are s-off! which indicates a full root.:D
So, if you want to continue to pursue this issue, we could guide you to flashing a sense rom, (since we cannot identify your current rom) then updating prl/profile, and if need be, calling Sprint so they can have you initiate some ## codes which is able to be done on a sense rom.
Let us know! :)

Well that's good news. I've been brushing off the issue for over two years now its time to get up to date. If you guys don't mind yes I'm ready. :)

AWESOME!!
See this post of mine from the other day in another thread.
I just had someone else wanting to flash another rom...

http://androidforums.com/4920443-post28.html

Instead of typing it all out again, check it out and please ask questions if not clear on anything.....we will be happy to help!:D

Well, if somebody rooted your phone for you, my guess is that you will have clockwork mod as a recovery. Before flashing or changing roms, I would highly, highly recommend changing your recovery to smelkus recovery. Do you know what recovery you have?

Now you both just lost me. :o

Now you both just lost me. :o

1. so first lets have you download mikg3.11. it is a great rom and a good one to start out with. go here:MikG v3.11 [3/9/2012] and download the fullwipe version.

2. while we wait lets find out what recovery you have. power off the phone (make sure fastboot is disabled, settings>apps>uncheck fastboot) then press and hold power+vol down. this will take you to the bootloader. select recovery from then menu. at the bottom it will say what recovery you have. report back with what you see. now if you have clockwork mod recovery (it should say at the bottom of the sd card) you might want to switch recoveries. to get info on how to do this go here:http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...ooting-dummies-guide-gingerbread-edition.html. there is a switching recoveries section that has the info.

3. once we have the file downloaded then we need to transfer the file over to the sd card. connect the phone via usb and on the phone select disk drive. a popup window should come up with the card's content or you can navigate to the card on your pc. simply either drag and drop the file or copy and paste it into the card. next select charge only on the phone to unmount the card. DO NOT PUT THE FILE INTO A FOLDER. leave it on the root (no folder) of the card. it is easier to find this way.

4. next you will want to make a nandroid backup. use the guide for directions on that.

5.now you will need to flash the rom. again use the guide. there is a flashing section with instructions.

any questions please feel free to ask.

Can't find the fast boot option on my phone.

Also couldn't find the recovery. :/

Or, depends on what rom you have, I think, push and hold the power button, then hit reboot, sometimes it will give you the option to reboot into recovery, reboot, or bootloader...
