Will Apple lose the 'cool factor?'

Is Apple losing the cool factor?

I believe so. The lawsuit combined with the enormity and 'corporate' environment of current pushes Apple on the downswing. Peeps are noticing the greed and forgetting the 'Apple community.' Face it: Apple is mainstream and will ostracize peeps as a result.

As 2 customers leave, 1 will join to 'see what they have been missing'.

The obvious advantage is Android but I believe something new is on the horizon.

Hmm... I'm not sure. I think a lot of the 'cool' people are also 'apple' people. I mean, they aren't (imo) going to start buying Samsung because Apple is too popular. Eh... I don't really know, I'm not really 'cool' at all - so my opinion on this is likely moot.

But I mean, the 'cool' people aren't installing linux because Mac and Windows are too popular.

As for something being on the horizon, I'm hoping it is something awesome from RIM.

There's a lot of former apple people who realize the lawsuits are evil.

I've seen many people buy the s3 because they don't want to support apple anymore

You know, that's a good point Rx. A *lot* of those Samsung commercials are pretty effective. The ones where it shows the Apple folks lined up outside waiting to get their ithing and the guy walks up with a s2 or s3 or whatever and is like "BAM!" look at all this awesome!

:D

think its a sin to say cool and apple in the same sentence. :p

I don't think the lawsuites will have much affect on the bottom line what is going to have affect is the lack of innovation that apple is now facing since the lead "innovator" is no longer.

*Will* they lose the cool factor? Yes. Nothing stays cool forever. When will it happen? Hopefully sooner than later, but we will be hit with a tsunami of press for the iPhone 5, so i'm sure that they have at least one more cycle in them. Lets see what they've got when they have to design something from scratch without Jobs.

Im glad they didnt change the design of the upcoming iphone. Same design isn't a very good marketing strategy. And most of people who buy Apple products simply goes for the looks not sure how they going to react to same but only stretched design and a new charging connector.. Thats like a slap in the face!

I am not so sure Apple's success is due to "the cool factor." What does that phrase really mean, anyway? Not so sure about that, either.

Apple is good at marketing and my guess is Apple sells mostly to those that think the iPhone/iPad are the best devices and they want a quality product. Apple products are generally well made. That is not the cool factor, it is good marketing and manufacturing.

Advertising always tells us to purchase product "Z" rather than product"X" because product Z is clearly superior. This is how advertising largely works.

Certainly, there are those that purchase everything Apple produces. For any number of reasons. Ditto the Android side. Some of the Android/Apple fanboys are quite unreasonable and for them, Apple/Android is the best, period.

Some people do think Apple sells cool products and certainly, some people care more about being "cool" than the performance of the device. Some purchase Apple products because they think it sends a message that they are part of something that may not truly exist. That is to say, some special cabal that must use Apple iDevices or they are just not "in." What percentage of the whole does this actually represent? I cannot imagine it is a large percentage.

I have seen some Apple users walking about and they are schlubs. Homely people that are definitely not cool. And since Apple now allows Virgin Mobile and Cricket to sell their phones with a no-contact deal, the iPhone might be not as cool as it once was.

Oddly, those schlubs must be rich (if they go VM/Cricket) because they can afford to immediately drop 500.00 - 700.00 to get their hands on an iPhone.

So I really do not know how much this cool factor figures in or if it represents a large part of Apple's customer base. And I am not so sure the lawsuits mean anything to most customers. Not one darn bit. Some care and they might decide Apple is not cool but millions will likely ignore Apple's courtroom antics and buy the iPhone 5.

Being truly cool is an art form. Perhaps it is something unique to a treasured few. For example, there are lots of big people, lots of crooners and lots of bikers, buit only one John Wayne, Frank Sinatra or Fonzie.

Many of us think we are cool but we are imposters. Not sure what it takes to be called cool. Attitude . . . dress . . . actions . . . there must be a cool gene. Not sure you can set out to become cool.

I am buying a custom black suit from a tailor shop. I'll wear it with a red silk shirt and tie. I'll wear cool black shoes and great socks. I often wear all black but I'll never be Johnny Cash.

I remember when Blackberry was cool. Or I seem to recall a time when the cool people used Blackberry phones. I could have Alzheimers, so feel free to correct me and tell me about the Blackberry/cool/fanboys back in the day.

Whatever the phenomena is, I'll tell you this: Apple stockholders certainly think Apple is cool. For many, the color of cool is green.

Yup. something new is out there waiting in the wings. It seems to always happen. Two guys in a garage create something that changes the game.

The problem, however, will be overcoming Apple's momentum.

Do not worry. When Apple releases a line of Android phones, all will be well.

Cool is all about being trend setters, but not deliberately. The truly cool will do their own thing and not care what others think. Those others will then mimic the cool and claim to be just as cool, all the while the truly cool, still don't care.

John Wayne never stopped being cool. Frank stopped when it started to matter to him and the fonz ... he jumped the shark.

I don't think Apple per se was ever "cool". Jobs was, but not the company. Now, if you are defining your cool factor based on your technology choices ... (where's that hockey buzzer sound effect?)

Nothing wrong with airborne bacon. ;)

Wait, what? Someone claims that Apple was "cool"?

Surely not.

*sighs* the world we live in ...

Apparently, many people/some people/an over-estimated group of people think Apple is cool. Apple taken in total is indeed cool. Their P/L is cool

I musta missed the "coolness"

I hate to say this but as long as Samsung and HTC continue to make plastic high end phones and as long as Motorola continues to make 'edge to edge' phones that still look bezeltastic, there will always be a market for Apple.

It's great that Android has the specs, the apps and other content but they will need to learn how to make something look really good instead of just good enough.

I didn't know apple invented 'cool'. I thought Miles Davis did...

Great album and yes . . he was certainly cool. When I played the horn, I worshiped the guy and I wanted to have his chops. But he was trumpet and I was B-Flat coronet so it was never to be.

So I tried to be Arban.

I dunno about "cool," but I think a lot of people are starting to get hip to Apple's licensing. Ultimately, the "total end-to-end control" that obsessed Steve Jobs will limit Apple's ability to meet market demand without going to progressively poorer QA statistics. (My wife has been through three iPhone 4-S's due to product failures, and our local carrier actually dropped one of our friends as a customer when he had to exchange five iPhones within a two month period, all due to product failures. Meanwhile, my poor little HTC Desire is 22 months old & still works fine.)

Footnote: After being very displeased initially with my HTC Desire, I rooted it, installed Cyanogenmod & discovered a whole new device! The experience totally changed my opinion of the Android OS.

I do not mind the plastics. My Triumph is plastic and so far, so good.

However, it is really no longer the Android OS, is it? Once you make all of those changes, only the framework is left. True or not? A friend of mine installs powerful engines, special suspension, brakes, fuel thing-a-ma-jiggers and other stuff that makes his Corvettes no longer Corvettes in many respects.

As for the "total end to end" you speak of, isn't that something Google wants to do? And Amazon for that matter? I mean one store for the consumer's needs, wants and desires from cradle to grave.

Odd that two people had to return 8 iPhones. Seems rather quizzical and perhaps something else is going on. You did not try to clean the screen in the dishwasher did you? Did you dry it on permanent press or heavy duty? Smiley :D

Actually, Cyanogenmod is closer to stock Android OS than the Sense ui that HTC puts on their phones.
