Telus Galaxy S2 (T989D) Ultimate Root and Optimization Guide with Steps

I followed the guide to a "T" with no problems but after trying to use Titanium Backup and Root Checker I get an error message saying "Sorry! This device does not have proper root access."

Any suggestions?

Welcome to the forums NOXQCS.

Flash this superuser file in recovery and see if it helps. You may get an error and an abort several times. That's normal. Just do it again.

The poster above, AustinsGalaxy, has the T989D and had to flash a different radio to get it to work but I'm not sure which one. I'm guessing it was the T989 UVLE1 ICS Radio. Try flashing that from this link then flash the rom. Also get the T989D TLLE4 ICS Radio. When you want to go back to stock you can flash it too.

So I ended up flashing my radio to the one you suggested, and still no dice. I restored back to the Telus stock ROM, and it still works so I know that the radio was successfully flashed. Same problem though, Cyanogen splash screen just keeps running indefinitely.

Not sure what else to try...

Are you wiping everything in recovery before installing the rom?

Have you tried a wipe data/factory reset after installing the rom?

See if the Koodo rom works for you. It looks like it works on Telus phones.

Hey everyone im still quite new to android and everything. I tried to flash cyanogen mod on my t989d and i got stuck in a bootloop. I posted in XDA on how to fix it and they said to use darkside super wipe then flash the rom (stock). I did the darkside part but i cant find a rom for telus' ICS any ideas where i can get one? and is this is the best way to fix my phone??

Hi bruddah, welcome to the forums. :ciao:

Do you want to go back to the stock Telus ICS? If so, download this file. It is the Telus ICS 4.0.3.

Then follow this guide to use Odin and install the stock rom. The only difference is you will be using the Telus stock you downloaded, not the T-Mobile stock. Also, in step #2, to go to download mode for the Telus you need to hold the volume down and power button.

Hey everyone! I have the t989D from telus and i got stuck in a bootloop with cyanogen mod. I know how to fix it but the problem is that i have lots of pictures on my phone's internal SD card that i desperately need. How can i transfer them to my computer or any other storage source? I tried to mount my phone via CWM Recovery but it doesnt work. My computer doesnt let me get into the files of the phone. It just says that it reckognizes a usb device and that it is a "Storage Device; Modem". Quick Help would be deeply appriciated!! :)

Have you fixed the boot loop? You can Odin back to stock and it won't erase the data on your internal or external storage.

Hi everyone,

Thanks for the awesome thread!! I'm looking forward to rooting my phone sometime in the near future!

Before I did, I have a question.

the 4th thing we need is:

If you are on 2.3.5: superuser apps 3.0.6 If you are on 2.3.6: superuser apps 3.0.7

And I was wondering if this (the 2.3.5 and 2.3.6) is referring to the android version. Cause I'm on android version 4.0.4.
Are the instructions still good for my version?
and is there a superuser app for 4.0.4 or will one of these work.

Thanks in advance!!

Welcome to the forum aquitania. :)

For 4.0.4 use the superuser file I posted a link to a few posts up. If you get an error that is normal. Just do it again.

Thanks for the quick reply!!

This is the one which you were speaking of, correct?

I don't want to mess this up, having the wrong files would be a terrible start!!

Cheers

Yes, that's the one. I was on my phone last night and couldn't post the link. :) If you flashed the wrong one it wouldn't hurt your phone, you just wouldn't get root. After you flash it and it works and you reboot, you may have to go back and flash one more time. That's what I, and a few others, have had to do in the past.

Have fun!

Hi. New to rooting phones. Couple questions.

1) Has anyone used this rooting procedure successfully with Android 4.0.4?
2) If root my phone will I still be able to upgrade to the next 'official' Android version as officially realised by Samsung, if there is one - or would I have to go get something off xda or somewhere?

Hi TechLady. :ciao:

Yes, it will work with 4.0.4. Just use this superuser file instead of the one in the OP. Yes, you can update if you're rooted. You will just lose root and have to reroot. If you don't have the Telus, you can also follow this guide. Its essentially the same, just without the Telus references.

hey guys i followed the OP to root my phone whit no problem

but i would like to try the ICS rom from MR.X does someone has a working link

or a DARKSIDE.TLLE4 from TDJ would be great

both rom are base on the telus stock ICS 4.0.3 thats why i want those roms

I spent hours on the XDA forum trying to find those roms but all links are down

sent de developers a PM but no reply so i am hoping that someine still has the roms and would like to share them

thanks

Hi rayman and welcome to the forums. :wavey:

I can't find working links for either of those roms. Have you tried Koodo? I think it works with Telus. I think there is a way to flash a T989 rom on the T989D. I'm trying to find out and I'll let you know.

i did flash a tmobile rom ( rooted ) on the telus phone when i bought the phone last year but did not like the boot animation and the 4g icon is not displayed because the radio is not the same i think

but those two rom i mentioned above seems to be the best out there for our phones
and made for our phones

lets hope that someone still has it and want to share it with us

thanks man for the reply

i am also a XDA member same name RAYMAN25 if i find the rom i will post a link in here

Ok thanks. I though a Telus user could flash the T989 roms but with other people here getting boot loops and stuck on booting up I was starting to wonder.

they need to this after doing what is said in the OP

backup their files using titanium backup
flash darkside.super.wipe in CWM ( google it )
then flash the radio rom ( the telus radio for ICS is TLLE4 )
then flash the custom rom
reboot
wait 10 minutes dont touch anything for 10 minutes
reboot again

works for me

for those interested on installing a custom rom and kernel on their telus or koodo phone i have isntalled the Jedi mind trick 9 and faux kernel on my phone and it is incredible here is the link

NEED TO BE ROOTED AND ON TELUS ICS 4.0.3 ROM OR KOODO ICS 4.0.4 ROM

|ROM| Jedi Mind Trick |V9| 9|19 - xda-developers

you also need the telus.zip file on the first page to be installed in Recovery to give you the 4g icon otherwise it will show only 3g because the rom is base on the T-mobile version of the phone

the ics radio for our phones here

Hi, Im pretty new to rooting and Ive just been looking around to see what its like and trying to understand what I dont before I even think of moving to it.
So I have one question. In this part of your guide : "If you are on 2.3.5: Superuser app 3.0.5 If you are on 2.3.6: Superuser app 3.0.7" I assume you mean if you are on such and such version, correct?
What do I pick if my Android is at 4.0.4. Or where can I find a Superuser app for it

/Im sorry, just read up a bit and found this question already answered.

Hi Deza. :wavey: Welcome to the forums. Glad you found it. :)

Thanks for this thread - I'm pretty tech savvy, but this rooting thing seems to be getting to me lol.. or maybe it's the cooler weather - who knows.

I know this has just recently been asked, but I'm trying to find the Telus 4.0.3 version, and I seem to be overlooking where the link is posted above. Could I bother to ask someone help me locate it (AND maybe perhaps edit the OP's link with the newer version of it so we don't need to browse a few pages to locate the link?). I found this actually threw a Google search. Thanks :)
