Root Just rooted my Evo 4g... now what.

So I have only had my evo for short time now and I a recovering iphone addict ( lol). My husband wanted to get something different with out upgrades so we did. When I had my iphone I had it jailbroken with blackrain so of course I wanted to root my evo which I found wasn't near as easy as jailbreaking lol. I am not a complete idiot when it comes to technical things and if given directions can do just about anything. I am still getting the hang of the big difference between the phones but I really wanted to know where I should go from here. I rooted last night with revolutionary and have been reading a lot about different ROMS. Excuse my ignorance but I am still quiet confused on what exactly I need a ROM for. Should I not run my phone rooted the way it is with gingerbread 2.3.3 or maybe I am not understanding it clearly. I am not asking for a step by step tutorial or anything I just wanted some insight as to of what I can do with my phone now. Any advise would be greatly appreciated.
 
Hello, you should check out the Rooted sub-forum (this'll probably be moved there), and take a look around. There are some good guides at the top that go in detail into all of that.

Okay, basically a ROM is like a 'flavor' of ice cream. All of our phones run on Ice Cream (android) and the rom is like chocolate (sense) or vanilla (AOSP) [[this analogy is working better than I expected :D]]

You don't really *need* one, but they are fun and have a lot of extra features.

You may want to look into some ROOT only apps, and flashing a kernel. Kernels influence how the software and hardware interact with each other and can change things (allow over/under-clocking).

TitaniumBackup, & SetCPU are some great root only apps to look into.

So now that you are rooted, you can do a lot of new things. If you are satisfied with Sense (the HTC 'stock' look), then that's fine. You can keep stock, or you can try out some Sense roms. A lot of roms have a hacked wireless tether app, so you can use that for free (just make sure you aren't roaming, sprint doesn't like that too much).

Also, you can remove all the bloat that sprint throws at you (Nova, blockbuster, etc).

I personally use a lot of networking tools that require root access, so that helps me out.

Thanks for the advise and I loved how you explained it lol, I will be sure to check out that forum. Going from an iphone know it all to the android I literally feel like a new kid at school hahaha!

No problem, and everyone is new at some point. But the folks over at the Evo Root forum are friendly and helpful. And there is a wealth of information over there.
 
ROM... these are full android OS .. that some dev took and made it their own.. buy adding or deleting or changing .. some parts or a lot of parts. they may change it from a Sense based android to a stock android or something totally different USER INTERFACE (still android OS).

Once Ice Cream Sandwich has been hacked... there will be a ROM based on ICS cooked for the EVO 4G. then you can update your phone to and ICE based ROM. No need for Sprint to give it to us (which they will never do now, that it is EOL)

Kernels... are like drivers in windows OS... it helps the hardware work better for android. changing to different kernels can help improve performance.

EVO 4G is a little old and is now on the way out.. END OF LIFE.
but for a newbie that is wanting to learn the ROOTING android world.. this is one of the better phones to learn on.. because it has a HUGE development community.. with so much support.

Very very very important. NEVER NEVER accept an OTA it could indoor your phone and even possibly brick it. Now that you are rooted the only way to update is to flash a ROM with the update

Always do a Nandroid before changing things on your phone
 
For a first rom flash i would recomend Mikg2.6. Its a lot like stock but has a lot of added features. Runs stable and has great battery life.
Its in the rom and kernel sticky under sense 2.1

I assume you did the htc dev method to unlock it, then did you install a custom recovery and flash superuser zip?
I think what you are looking for is a custom rom now.....that's where the fun begins!:D
I guess my question is, how did you go about rooting it?

yes that is because you are on stock. stock roms are sooooooooo boooooring😴

you should try mikg3.11 which is has a stock feel but is so much better. you can try aosp roms that have sense removed and is pure android. you will never see an official ics or even jb roms from htc for the og evo. however, our devs are so awesome they have made ics and jb roms available for us.
 
ok guys, my phone is deactivated from sprint as they suck!!! and i currently use it over wifi connection and im hoping someone can help me out cause im new to this and think i screwed up!!!! i unlocked my bootloader with htc website cause i had 2.18 and my s is still on??? i tries to do revoked but it wont work. since the guide i was using wasnt working and i was re directed to htc site, i never got to make a backup and wiped my card. i tried a few roms but cant seem to find one that works decent. i have i gues a stock gingerbread 2.3.5 version but it sucks!! not only that my battery DRAINS so fast compared to before the root and it is lagging and freezing really bad. i tried to use setcpu but i cant figure that out for the life of me. I also want a coor rom thats fast and stable any suggestions??? i did manage to get root but i am so confused as what to do next???

Hello there.
Follow this guide....click on "show" under the htcdev method and you can skip the htcdev method and continue with installing recovery if you havent already...

You need to downgrade your hboot via Capt method to get unrevoked to work to get s-off, but its not needed if all you want to do is flash roms/kernels etc.....:)
 
i dont have a recovery file to flash :(. and i guess im looking for a rom that works better than what i have. i like the ice cream rom but cant find a decent one or would try jellybean
 
im a little confused, but im looking the guide over now. i dont want to make a recovery of the OS i have now as its giving me much lag,freezing and very poor battery life. where can i find one of these hotshot roms that are "so much better and faster"

A recovery is like a mini os on your phone....you can flash roms etc thru recovery and fix things thru recovery....it has no effect on your rom (OS).
The recovery is the next step after unlocking bootloader.
Then after recovery install, either flash rom or flash superuser zip to have a rooted, stock rom...but custom roms are so much better!
 
so ur saying if i make a recovery now it wont be this crappy os i have now? ive already flashed a couple different roms and cant seem to find a decent one. and i hate the one i have now. how do i know what roms do what?
 
you need a recovery / nandroid back up of a working phone.. even with some issues.
it is a place to jump back to .. if things get messed up.

when you find a better ROM, then you can make a better nandroid backup. there can never be to many backups!!!

as far as I know... only 100% working ROMs are of Gingerbread.
ICS still has a few broken features: ex: Wimax and Front Camera.
Jelly is not ready for daily use.
 
hi dan :) i can live with the front camera and 4g not working.. whats wrong with the jelly bean rom?? just curious and where can i find that ice cream rom?

What recovery do you have now..just curious...how do you flash roms ?
 
i dont have a recovery as of now. i download the file to my computer, rebot to bootloader select the usb feature and it opens the windows with my sd contents and i put the zip in there and flash it then reboot....i think :)
 
to look for ROMs... go to xda-developers.com
find the root section of the phone you have.
read the stickys

to make good working versions of android .. you have to have all the pieces for the devs to reconfigure. one major piece is the kernel... that has drivers and instructions for each phone to use all the different components to talk to android OS. each android version has a special kernel.

the HTC Sense kernel for Jelly Bean is not out.. and there has not been a kernel created yet by HTC or devs.
