Official EVO Rumors and Speculation thread

Hey guys hope you all ate some great food today! I know i did!

The price for the mobile hotspot app, and this is a total shot in the dark if i might add, is between $20-$30. The only reason Verizon is doing that for free is because they can't sell the phones! hahaha It is like an incentive for buying one because sales are absolutely horrible. That phone in no way shape or form can stack up to the droid.

Also there have been rumors going around Sprint HQ (unconfirmed) that the Evo date may be pushed back until June 21. The only possible reason for this, and this confirms the reasoning from matt's source, is that it will ship with android 2.5. If this is the case i am thinking better for us and hey that is one day earlier than the iphone

I really hope it comes out before the 21st cause I'll be on vacation that whole week!

I honestly think that HTC has been reinventing itself lately as a big player. All those years using HTC PPCs were OK but there were always issues where they skimped on the RAM or storage or dealt with missing graphics drivers or other shortcomings. I think both Sprint and HTC have been listening to the complaints and realizing what kind of quality people expect of smart phones. It's taken years to do the R&D but it's starting to pay off. Once again, I hate to bring up Apple given the love/hate relationship people have with them but for all the shortcomings of the iPhone, the amount of attention paid to proper integration of hardware and software was very high and showed everyone else that unless you go all out on quality, all the flexibility does you no good.

Now with an open and flexible OS in Android, manufacturers like HTC and carriers like Sprint find themselves in the middle of a perfect storm where the available hardware is powerful enough and the network infrastructure can support these next gen devices. I might come off sounding a little fanboyish but it's really something I've been watching slowly progress from those early Treos and PPCs. The specs and integration we've all been asking for in those years-long "dream phone" threads are finally panning out. It takes time to develop this stuff and it's finally all coming together.

I think throwing out your iPod is a little extreme, I can't store a quarter of my music on a 16GB card nonetheless.

Thanks for the updates for sure though.

I'm going to throw out my iPod actually. I have an 80gig one and it looks like I can get about 80 bucks on ebay for it. Should be able to get 150 for my hero. Thats 230 right there towards what I expect will be a 600-700 phone. This phone is too exciting for me to wait till my upgrade in 2011.

Maybe Jackson (who i might start referring to as the Herald because he brings us all the news) can help with this. I'm on a family plan with Sprint and I'm not the premiere account. I was told I could switch to make my line the premiere account and would not affect accessibility, payment...can I take that to mean that the only aspect of premiere that is different is the ability to upgrade yearly? Because if so, that would make convincing the premiere account holder much easier :D

Back to music, I have about 20 gigs of music and was psyched when I saw the Hero could use up to a 32gig sd card. A crushing reality was that 32gig sd cards didn't exist at the time, so I couldnt just dump my whole collection on it ;( So I bought a class 6 16gig one and will wait till class 6 32gig ones are available and affordable.

Incidently, this led me a new way of managing my music that I find much better. I really don't NEED to have all my music on my phone, just my favorite songs. I rip the entire album not just the ones I like so theres plenty of songs I almost never listen to. This is what I did: in winamp, I selected my entire library and gave everything 3 star ratings. Then I went through each artist and 5 star'd my favorite songs. Took about 20 minutes, not too bad. Then I resorted my library by star rating, selected the 5stars and made a new playlist out of them, then used a USB plugin for winamp to move them en masse to my Hero. Turned about to be 700 songs out of about 3500. Now I can do a 'shuffle all songs' in the MixZing music app and only need to tap 'next' a couple times to find a song I like and fits my mood.

I just bought iSyncr, which is an iTunes sync app for android so i don't have to do the whole drag/drop thing, but unfortunately that means I need to repeat the star-assigning process but it will be worth it in the end because I'll be able to easily sync my music when I mount my phone. Something I wish google did was tighter, native multimedia syncing but well...theres an app for that, at least ;)

Dylan you must not be a happy camper right now, my Sox are beating up on you guys...if only your catcher could do just that...CATCH hahaha

and yess cabbie there is no extra charge or fee to be a premiere customer, its just Sprint's way of thanking you for sticking with them. It allows you to get a free upgrade everyyear and have first access to upcoming devices and all other kinds of cool stuff. If you need any more info go to your local store or check out the link on sprints webpage =]

I was gonna sell the 32GB iPod Touch I got in trade for my Touch Pro on craigslist but last weekend I did something to it and messed up the LCD. I never really use it anymore but at this point I figure I might as well keep it for the car since nobody will really pay me much for one with a blotch on the screen.

As far as music, I have a ridiculously large music collection so I tend to rotate out sets of albums as I get tired of some or want to add others. Lots of the time these days I just flip between Shoutcast bookmarks and let someone else make the playlsts.

Well i have heard Rumors that there will be two versions of the iphone. One for other carreirs called the iPhone HD, and one for sprint dubbed the iPhone 4G. It would make sense to me and the relationship between both companies is very very good. There would be absolutely no prupose for a front facing cam on a 3G network because there is no oppotunity for video chatting on 3G. You would have to be connected to wifi.

So yess i have heard apple is trying to do what google did and spread their OS to all major carriers, as we have seen more and more that cellphone exclusitivity has gone out the window except with few phones like the droid and Evo. I will keep you all posted but it could indeed be a reality folks

Jackson
That actually makes sense. With Google and its idea of having one phone across multiple carriers (Nexus), Apple may want the same with its flagship iPhone. having a iPhone 4G on Sprint will make alot of folks happy.

As for the comment of Android 2.2/2.5/FroYo...
Supersonical has a point about only the new applications working with 4G. But at the same token, this phone was in development since 2008 with both Sprint and HTC. They had to be in talks with Google also at one point in reference to the 4G part. Since these talks are within the same time frame that FroYo is in development, one can assume that they are trying to put in the code to make it work with 4G. With Google as a partner of Clearwire and its 4G, it only makes sense. So yeah I really believe that even if the EVO comes out soon to compete with the iPhone with only 2.1, I see 2.2/2.5 coming no later than a few months (if that) right after.

Monoprice rules for low price cables. I picked up a 25' high end hdmi cable for under $30 if I remember. Frys you can buy a 3' cable for $20. cables and connectors are things you never want to buy at the big name stores.

Also, Jackson is my hero! Just in case nobody has said that tonight :)

There are also rumors of a very high end motorola android handset coming fall of this year around the same time as the palm c40. I will try and get a model number on this one so we can keep an eye on it too. WiMAX.....

The Shadow? The one that looks like a Droid, but with specs similar to Evo? hdmi, 8mp and has a wrist strap, lol.

I would say aorund 1GB, HTC executives at the phone launch said these numbers would increase and they will. We have to remeber that this phone is more than Sprint's flagship, it is also HTC's. This is the device that really puts them over the top and brings them into the top tier in the american phone industry.

this is all true my friend, there are many accesories in the making to make this device last as long as you will need it. Google HTC Evo accessoires.

Also, Sprint has been talking with websites like Hulu and fancast. Right ow they block mobile phones but this could all change with the Evo. They are blocked right now because trying to access a video via a 3G connection can fry the server. With 4G it is a whole different ball game.

DAN HESSE IS MY BOY WOOOHOOO!!! GO SPRINT!!!!

And Hulu requires Flash I believe, so this phone can handle it, which is what I have been so looking forward to!

just watched the space shuttle go off from my house. its always an amazing sight in the dark.

im thinking about getting one of those power mats. and i hope hulu unblocks the phone.

Correct - Hulu blocks mobile devices regardless if they have flash support or not. I'm sure it has to do with copyright laws. I know you guys seem to have a hatred for Apple, but recently Netflix has popped on the iPad and is supposed to go to the ipod/phone too - so if Netflix can handle the copyright laws to stream to mobile devices I think Hulu certainly could too.

In the video about the powermat, didn't he say it would be $34.95? That seems a little high for a battery charger. The Google Nexus One Desktop Dock at $45.00 also charges the battery and somehow seems better and more elegant.

That is the price for the replacement battery that is OEM sized. That's a great price compared to the cost you would pay for a battery in a retail store.

I am guessing the battery is $34.95 and the power mat is actually more. Just a guess but that's how these things usually go. (chad.mobley11 posted just before me,lol. I type slow!)

when I was on a palm pre for 2 months, I picked up a pair of touchstone chargers. cool factor? yes. worth it? not a chance. They were also buggy. I am personally not going to even consider a power mat. When I plug in a power cord, I know it is working. power cords are small and easy to lug around.

That is my feeling anyway.

That that sucks on the Hulu bit. Good to hear Netflix is open. Hulu will have to get the mobile figured out, if they want to stay in business. The future of computing is mobile.

Yea im sure its 40$ JUST for the battery. Im sure the pad will be much much more

That's the way I feel about it too, although a Desktop Dock w/charger would be nice too.

One thing that will be cool about the Evo is its kickstand for using the phone as an alarm clock. Hopefully when its in landscape the clock will get nice and big like the Droid does. If not, im sure there will be tons of alarm clock apps for it

Good point, subzero. I imagine there will be an app or mode for what you just described.

I sent my Sprint rep (I manage the mobile for my company) an email last week:

I had a question for you regarding the new HTC EVO 4G that's coming out in a month or two. I've been following every development and rumor for this phone and I know that BestBuy is going to be taking pre-orders in May for this phone. My question for you is, will they acknowledge my Sprint Premier status? Also, being you are an account manager, can I pre-order through you?

I understand you probably can't give me much information due to confidentiality clauses perhaps, but anything you got and can give me would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Here is the reply I got this morning:

Hi Ilya,

Thanks for reaching out! There definitely is a lot of excitement surrounding the HTC Evo 4G, as there should be! We still haven

Good detective work Ilya. I was going to wait til after the 16th to bug my account rep about it cause like yours, I didn't think she'd know all that much about it but it's good that you got that much out of yours.

Regarding Hulu, it has nothing to do with copyright law...not the way you're probably thinking. They work with the content holders (studios, etc) to get the rights to show the material. The problem is that the content owners want this to be a supplement to watching on TV or buying DVDs and iTunes and stuff. They make way more money from TV ratings, DVD sales, etc. than they do from the couple of ads on hulu.com. To them, this is a way to cut down on casual infringement and maybe recoup a little. As such they refuse to sell the rights to display their content on TVs, cell phones, etc. To do so would (in their mind) cut down on sales/ratings. This is why clients meant for the TV are blocked (Boxee, etc) as well as mobile devices. Even if you got in-browser Flash working the site would have to be fooled into thinking you were using Firefox or whatever. Chances are the only way you will get Hulu will be for them to come out with an application and hash out specific deals with the content owners for more ads and more revenue to make up for perceived loss of income from mobile streaming.

Hi everyone,

I've been lurking for a while reading up on all the exciting Evo news - can't wait. Also want to say thanks to jackson (aka Supersonical here) for all the great leaks!

I Had to finally post since I have something potentially useful to add: I can watch Hulu on my ancient Mogul using the Skyfire browser all day long - works like a charm. Skyfire is also working on a new version for Android, so that should be a solution for those of you who have to have your Family Guy (or whatever).

All the best, & thanks for the great thread!
