lol I just created a rule in gmail for them.

Yes I do want it now too, but I rather them get it right before they release it.

Also where is Jackson? lol

Actually, I believe there was quite a bit that wasn't finished. The only reason we found out about the phone when we did was because of CTIA. That forced Sprint to play their hand before they were actually ready to make an announcement.

I understand that waiting is a killer, but at least we have pictures, videos, specs and a lot of written reports that I'm so thankful to have. Without a doubt, Sprint wants to release this phone as much as we want it, but I can't see them releasing the phone before it's ready. It would be wonderful if we get the phone in the late spring instead of early summer, but I wouldn't get your hopes up too high. Yes, we all want the phone now, but I don't want it before it's finished. As far as the timing compared to the Apple device could have some bearing, but not for me. Even if the EVO comes out after the iPhone, people are still going to be clamoring for our phone. I'm just saying it could be 2 or 3 months yet, so it's a little early to get all worked up about it. At least Sprint has the EVO on their front page now and according to Jackson, we should know more next week.

Billsmed, I respectfully disagree.

Sprint will only be able to compete with other carriers based upon economics, not technology. Waiting 2 or 3 months to establish the best possible phone as opposed to capturing a captive audience in the nearer future would be a blunder on Nexus One proportions. Enthusiasts such as you and I, those who spend time on message boards, are a small fraction of the necessary volume or momentum needed for Sprint to survive 2010. They cannot rely on android because it functions on all carriers. They cannot rely on brand loyalty because they are an underdog to Verizon and At&t at the moment. Their backs are against the wall with Wimax/4g as their only card to play. The longer a consumer waits, the more interested they will become in comparable phones on Verizon and At&t. If they launch in June in the midst of "new iPhone" hysteria........do you actually believe the average smartphone consumer looking to buy is going to stay focused upon the Evo?? By that time, the galaxy S and multiple more options with the Nexus One and Incredible will be tugging at the wallet of each market participant. Long engagements are disasterous for relationships as they are for the economics of technology.

The other factor I should mention is the price point. High end phones are mostly purchased with contracts due to the cost subsidy. We all know this. Sprint has a unique opportunity now in Q2 to capture 2 years of revenue with SCA (strategic competitive advantage) marketing their cutting edge phone with cutting edge 4G capability. In a few months, the Evo will no longer be as cutting edge and 4G Wimax will be downplayed by the advances of LTE on both Verizon and At&t. The only ppl left with bated breath in June for the Evo will be the same ppl reading this thread, not Joe Consumer.

If as you say the technical aspects of the phone are months away from launch ready..........then Sprint as already taken the first misstep on a blunderous path to 3rd fiddle in the US carrier market. That is not progress at all considering they are currently holding that spot.

I could be wrong, I hope i'm wrong. The April marketing campaign could be spectacular and capture the publics imagination until June. That doesn't seems likely to me. Look at the ferocity and investment Verizon had to put into the Droid campaign to get it off the ground.........only to be blunted now by an infinite army of android phones. Verizon got ppl locked in and that should be the strategy of Sprint. They don't have the luxury of being Verizon in 2009.

The EVO was most certainly not very functional at CTIA from the looks of it.

Thats why almost every video showed you the same things, i.e. YouTube app, QIK, camera etc.

They couldn't show other functions of the phone for the most part because they weren't finished.

Pretty sure I distinctly remember the people showing the phone saying that those apps were the only ones they COULD show.

Few questions, if I may:

I know of matte on black finishes, but can they also come in white? I'm probably going to get the white one if available.

Also, I'm sceptical when it comes to rooting devices. All I have done with my Pre is add patches. Is there a big risk rooting them? I don't want my warranty to wear off. Regarding this, if I do root and the phone bricks and if I pay for insurance, would they replace the device?

Thank you!

Sixstringsam, I agree with some of the things you've mentioned, however, I would disagree that 4G Wimax will be downplayed by LTE in a "few months".

From everything I've read, it seems it will take at least another year for Verizon to have a competent LTE network deployed nationwide.

I believe Sprint will have at least a sizeable 6+ months head start as far as 4G.

Chances are the mainstream consumer may be more prone to switch over to Sprint due to the comparatively lower-priced plans, allure of no additional charges for 4G (for now at least), and the new 30-day guarantee, however, the EVO will certainly draw in the tech-minded, and will undoubtedly create more positive mind-share for Sprint.

Also, have any of you read about the RCA WiFi charger? I wonder what the expected consumer release would be for that.

RCA's Airenergy charger converts WiFi energy to electricity

It would surely be appreciated by all the future EVO power users in this thread!

I clicked the link and got really excited. Then I read the comments and most of the people that sounded credible (including an RF engineer) say that this product is most likely complete bunk :(

I want a desktop dock, a car dock, a case + screenshield which I will get ASAP. Down the line I want to see something like a speaker dock for taking it out to the beach or to parties.

One aspect of the iPod i've always liked is that you could play music and power it through just the one port. With my Hero in my car, I need two wires. I hope a car dock comes about that will automatically mount the usb or something to play music through it while charging. Or figure a way to use the HDMI out to do it.

One of the strengths apple has is that with the zillions of accessories out there, they have really locked in people (in addition to their paid apps). Accessories are going to be such a critical part to this phone succeeding down the line, and for new versions of EVO being backwards compatible with these devices. iPhone has so many cool things like this IR remote case that can operate your TV/etc. Some sort of inline remote with controls is a must too. Some sort of media dock that could communicate with bluetooth enabled HDTVs to take advantage of the high definition. Theres a ton that can be done and I'd get most of them as time goes by.

many people here said that sprint must release EVO before June to succeed.
I agree to this at some degree but from long term prospect, this EVO and Wimax will have to swim up stream. and sadly I think EVO/Wimax will not survive the sunami caused by LTE and Apple.

even Clear Wire and Sprint acknowledge that they like to and can move to LTE easily to reduce the risk of Wall Street downgrade.

at work, many people who had iphone said they will buy the new iphone HD/OS 4 this summer. Others who don't have iphone like to buy one. No one even mentions about EVO, except myself.

releasing a few months early will not have mass impact on long-term prospect. Unless sprint has some magic to change the game rules, sprint will have no choice but join LTE and get iphone on their network, even Verizon CEO is now begging Apple for iphone.

if iphone is available on verizon, sprint will lose customers fast. they will do whatever it takes to have the phone.

sorry for the negative post but people like us are minority. Joe Consumer will decide, not us.

Sprints and clearwire just have nothing to be afraid of. They have a MASSIVE first mover advantage in 4G coverage. The time window for how often almost everyone keeps their phone is 12-24 months. If LTE becomes dominant, apparently its relatively simple and affordable for Clearwire to retrofit their Wimax antennas to LTE. EVO will be out for a full year before Verizon even releases an LTE phone, and the number of markets will be very small. So when Verizon releases their fancy phone, EVO 2 will be coming down the line. I can't even imagine how badass EVO 2 will be, and by then there will probably be 150+million people covered by it as opposed to how many markets by LTE? Consumers who want speed will have to go to Sprint for coverage and they will get hooked on the plan pricing, speed and phone quality. If LTE becomes the 'it' thing, like I said, Clearwire can convert and new sprint phones will use that. But don't forget that Wimax2 standards will be approved this year and clearwire is playing with the idea of testing it out next year. Wimax2 gets 80+ mbs versus LTE 6-12 mps. Sprint's future looks very bright but they do need to do a release ASAP to suck the wind out of iPhone4 hype and stop bleeding subscribers.

Yeah but Apple is selling 4g, not sure what that game plan entails but to most consumers ears that means Apple has the same thing as everyone else (even if they really don't).

I'm just going on what I've read and my experience. Last October when the HTC Hero was released, Best Buy's preferred customers were the first one to get the Hero (one day before it was officially released) and BB's big sales come on was that they were waiving the MIR. That's why I believe the same thing will be done with the EVO, however I don't know this for a fact.

I'm pretty sure Best Buy can handle the swap as well.

I spoke with the manager at bestbuy mobile and he told me the preorder will be a $50 giftcard that will assure your product. We never spoke of a swap....
I was under the impression you simply get a new phone at new contract pricing without having to give up your old phone... are you telling me I have to give up my old phone.... makes no sense!

No the swap referred to here was someone who had an additional line that was eligible for an upgrade, getting the EVO at the upgrade price then swapping the EVO to their line of service. For example I got a Hero within the past year, someone else on my family plan is eligible for an upgrade. I will upgrade their phone to the EVO then promptly swap the EVO to my line. Beware: If you plan to do this and use a MIR (Mail In Rebate) the phone must be active on the upgraded line when the rebate is processed which will be several weeks later. Utilizing Best Buy to not have to deal with the MIR is the way to do an immediate ESN Swap.

Guys, the whole timing debate is interesting and so I want to give my two cents....

What are the potential threats to the success of the EVO 4G?....

1. LTE deployment? - Not happening until late this year and that's just a beginning...Sprint has a big head start with WiMax deployment. Imagine the amazing video reviews and comparisons and how they will show this phone blowing away the competition. It's gonna be a game changer!

2. Another 4G phone? Perhaps the Galaxy S...or even an iPhone 4G is possible. Maybe another unknown? I see the iPhone 4G as a threat because it would provide the speed and is a popular phone. There is a vulnerability here because this would indeed provide competition to the EVO. I believe the EVO will still hold it's own...but wouldn't it be better if it were released without competition...for at least a few months?

3. Another cool 3G phone? Sure, the Incredible will draw people...as would the availability of an iPhone on Verizon. And perhaps the Motorola Shadow...reported to have a 4.3 inch screen. I see these full featured phones as a draw based on carrier reputation and on the specs of the phones themselves. Still, if anyone takes the time to compare, the EVO will blow them away speed wise...in a WiMax market.

Ultimately, I think the EVO 4G has more staying power than just April, May and June...but the earlier it releases the better. If I'm guessing correctly, even next August/Sept...it will still be the fastest 4G phone on the market. Unless Sprint has a few other phones in the pipe...it's safe. IMNSHO

On a personal note, I was definitely in the Incredible camp....and set a deadline of May for my next phone purchase...but I find the EVO 4G so compelling that I believe it's worth a wait until at least July.

Beyond May it's going to be difficult for me to wait...beyond June all but impossible...beyond July...don't even talk about it!

From what I am hearing the Sprint is trying to release the Evo with 2.5, as of right now the release date is unknown. I heard this from a trusted source who is affiliated with Sprint, not going into details. Give it a couple of weeks and we should know more.

Just curious if any of the folks on this thread:

- have experience as Android Developers?
- have experience creating custom ROMs for smartphones?

I have a custom ROM on my HTC Touch, that I got from some website.
I re-flashed my phone with this custom ROM and ended up with a complement of SW apps, and layout I really liked.
I was interested in "cooking" up my own custom ROMs but never followed up.

I would like to pursue this when I get my EVO - I'm sure it will already be excellent, but there will be some number of people who will want to play with the interface, layout, skins, etc...

Maybe the large number of apps available for the EVO will reduce the desire for custom ROMS??

Anybody else interested in this?

Danny

Like you I am use to flashing my HTC Touch Pro. I am interested in rooting the evo and checking out custom roms. They get off all the extra crap and run a lot faster, doubt it will make the Evo any faster though, it's pretty fast looking at the video's.

That's cool, I think it's a neat idea but I have no plans to invest in one since I would rather have the official dock with HDMI out but some people with the Pre and/or Pixi claim they will miss the Touchstone so I figured I would show them what I saw at CTIA. Just more information for the consumer that's all.

I'm all for new ideas... Wasn't directing negative opinions towards anyone. Was just throwing my .02 out there on product. It may grow into something much better some day.

Hi guys!! I'm so excited about joining this forum and about the EVO. This will be my first Android device and I can't wait. I have been following this thread and I have to say all of you guys are knowledgeable, especially Jackson. I currently have a Palm Pre and was an exclusive blackberry fanboy before then. I am soo anxious for this phone to come out. I'm going crazy waiting.

Welcome to the forums! Feel free to comment on anything about the EVO and how disappointed you are in the Pre's hardware LOL jk. I'm a pre owner too.

It's hard to find a Pre/Pixi owner who don't have a negative thing to say about them :D. Poor Palm, I really thought they had this one. It's so great, yet so far.

I dont think this video has been posted and i don't think it's a fair comparison, but look at how nice that video looks. Also another EVO video shouldn't hurt :)

I love how at the end he is talking about Flash and the only thing he points out is how you can see the Flash enabled advertising.

While I am personally not a fan of Flash, I have to say it is pretty impressive that this phone can render it because it is such a resource hog.
