Official EVO Rumors and Speculation thread

Pretty cool stuff coming to the iPhone OS, but until that thing switches to another network or can touch half the specs of the Evo, I'm staying put on Sprint.

My money is still on an iPhone HD out right after the Evo.

thanks, care to elaborate on the amoled and tft im kind of leaning more towards the EVO now i mean i dont really think id use the front facing camera but the bigger screen and the cheaper plans are a plus was really hoping for the n card but no biggie.

From what I gather AMOLED has better color and uses less battery, but you can't see it in sunlight good at all.

amoled in a nutshell is more colorful, truer blacks, less drain on the battery than tft but forget about using that screen outdoors (ive seen someone somewhere state that using the screen outdoors was like taking a picture with your eyes closed) the wife as an amoled screen on her phone and i dont really see too much difference than my phone which is lcd.. id love for the evo to come with amoled but if it didnt it def wouldnt be a deal breaker for me

With the specs/features the evo will have.. i think i can safely say im gonna wanna be able to view my screen outdoors...

thanks appreciate it. yeah the screen type is out the window for me now as well but orlando is on the list of rumored cities to get 4G so thats another plus lol

If your city has 4G and if it ends up not costing any additional fees for 4G (as is rumored) then its not even a choice, IMO.

Just borrowed an HD2 from a co-worker for a few minutes to get an idea of what the Evo's form factor will be like. WOW. Going from a Palm Pre to this beast will certainly take some getting used to. That said, the screen is absolutely gorgeous! She tells me the Evo will be a bit thicker (.1mm) and slightly less wide. Really like how the screen goes to the edges of the phone. Too bad this thing has WM6.5 on it!

...so...what's the deal with this kickstand design?

Is the kickstand built into the phone? I hope not, unless it is completely "stowable".

It seems that it would be high risk part for failure/breakage.

Also, I usually carry my phone in front pocket of my slacks (although this may be a problem for me with the larger EVO). I would be worried about the kickstand accidentily become "deployed" and end up getting jabbed in the stomach (or worse...).

Any thoughts?

Danny

I agree fully! I am very nervous that the kickstand will become loose after some use. Do 'yall' think this will be a problem?

Yea I kind of have my worries about going to the larger form factor as well. 4.3inches is massive, and I can't imagine what holding the Dell Mini 5 would be like (rumored that it'll have phoning capabilities). With one of these devices, I think going the Bluetooth route is definitely the only option. I wouldn't want to press that nice screen up against my face, nor do I think it would be a pleasant experience.

If I do end up getting the Evo 4G like I'm hoping I will, then bluetooth will be quite the necessity.

FYI - I just did a Google search on "imagio + kickstand + loose" (Imagio is a Verizon phone made by HTC that HAS a kickstand and has been around for a bit) and didn't find any relevant results in the links for the first few pages - you can check it out yourself if you like: imagio + kickstand + loose - Google Search

NO results for "Imagio + 'kickstand broke'"...

So... it seems like they probably know what they're doing with that piece of the hardware...

I have a question for current android users:
When using free apps are there ads of any kind embedded in the UI? I saw apple's big announcement that dev's will be able to include ad space in their free applications which is then controlled by apple, and it made me wonder if that's something that happens with android apps also.

I hope not. In-app ads make me cringe.

I know it would be preferable for there not to be in app adds, but on a 4.3 inch screen it doesnt seem like it would be the end of the world. A couple of the free apps on the pre (see accuweather and pandora) had adds but they weren't obnoxious, and that is on a much smaller screen. You gotta remember that the devs have to make money some how, and if advertising makes the best apps free, then I'm all for it.

On the kickstand thing, in one of the videos people in this thread were saying the stand seemed loose or floppy, so I watched for that in other videos and you can see that the stand definitely snaps into place. It's hard not to be a little skeptical, but on the other hand, if you're in a video conference, do you want to hold the phone the whole time you're talking or do you want to use a book or something like that to hold the phone while you watch a movie? The kickstand seems more stable and it seems less likely that the phone would fall over this way. Just my 2 cents.

Bill,

You need no defense, this thread is strictly speculative debate. If anything Sprint should offer you a commission for the fraction of sales you alone will generate for the Evo.
I wouldn't mind it if they gave me a demo model for a week or two. That way, I could talk more in depth about the EVO and give some reviews of my own.

Could you please link me to that video? I looked at a few and didn't see a snap.

I saw the whole OS4 blog for iPhone. So they basically added stuff that Android's been doing already. And check this quote out from the liveblog:

"11:29AM Ryan Block from GDGT: What about running unsigned apps?

Steve: You know, there's a porn store for Android. Anyone can download them. You can, your kids can. That's just not a place we want to go."

It's been awhile since I watched any of those videos, but I remember clearly in one that the guy had a little trouble getting the stand to release from the closed position. It definitely snaps in place.

The world is big enough for both android and apple, each side has their own fans, nothing wrong with it.

Hey All,

This is my first post on the Androidforums. I'm a member of ppcgeeks and Sprintusers forums, but because I plan on getting the EVO, I've decided to join the Android EVOlution!

Just spent an hour or so reading through this entire thread and I must say that any hesitations I had of getting the EVO, completely went out the window after reading all of the information in this thread!

I currently have a HTC Touch Pro running WinMo 6.5. I've been using and have gotten used to using WinMo for the past 3-4 years (Mogul and Touch Pro), but the OS is dying and I'm completely fed up with it (especially the quirkiness of the Touch Pro).

I've been a diehard advocate of needing physical QWERTY keyboards because I use my phone for personal and work emails, but the EVO seems to be the perfect phone for me to get rid of that need and jump on the full touchscreen bandwagon.

Funny thing is, I could be wrong, but I think Jackson (Supersonical) was one of the few insiders providing all of the great "inside" information regarding the Touch Diamond and Touch Pro release a couple years back.

Anyhow, it's always great to join a new forum discussion board. I'm a moderator on a car forum and also very familiar with V-Bulletin, so you all don't have to worry about me not STFF!...:D Look forward to learning more and more about Android, prior to the EVO being released, so that I'm ready to transition over. Hopefully, if what Jackson said is correct regarding Big Corporations getting "first dibs" on the phone, that'll mean I'll get my phone right away, without hassle.

Welcome drexappeal. I'm glad you decided to join us here at AF.

A few months ago the iPhone loving media kept saying Android didn't stand a chance, because Apple had such a big lead in the app store. This article that appeared on Engadget this morning caught my attention:

Android Market gets 9,000 new apps in March

cncsGL

Developers must clearly believe Android's growing market share is only going to keep expanding, as last month saw their most productive output yet, with a sweet 9,308 new additions to the Market. Naturally, the same proviso applies as with Apple's inflated App Store numbers -- quantity does not guarantee quality -- but what we're witnessing is surely the solidification of Android as a legitimate and fully fledged member of the smartphone OS upper echelon.

andddlay, look at this video. At about the 3:00 minute mark you see the HTC rep having a little trouble releasing the kickstand.

Yea this is what I hate about apple an there fan boys!!! They get new features that have been around for ages on all my windows mobile phones and now on every android phone...and they think it revolutionary.... excuse me while I go throw up lol:eek: and the worst part is how all these apple fans believe in it (shaking my head!!!)

and no offense to those speaking on that kickstand... PLEASE GET OVER IT lol... it's not going to be an issue b/c I'm sure HTC has tried it out before adding it to such a device like the htc evo...im sure they wouldn't want to add something to a device of that magnitude for it to fail plus htc and sprint both must have approved it for good reason! plus the htc imagio on Verizon has and i've never not for once heard any issues about it...and if issues existed you bet your bottom dollar that Engadgetmobile.com would've been all over it in a hot flash!! :D;)
