Agreed. NKT reported that his source's test phone was clocked at 768MHz also, and said that even with Sense, the Incredible was just as fast, if not faster than the N1, which he was also able to play with at the same time.

On the other hand, Stericson's source's test phone was clocked at 1GHz, and he dumped the data here to prove it, so it looks like there were multiple versions of the phone floating around out there at the same time.

Interestingly, one of the comments on another blog site made by a purported electrical engineer was that he was going to get this phone, and if it was shipped at 1GHz, he was going to try to down clock it to ~750MHz because the real bottleneck in the phone would be memory access time, so that the difference between ~750MHz and 1GHz in real world performance would be negligible at most, but battery life would be substantially increased by the lower clock speed.

I am NOT an engineer, and I don't claim that the other poster's info is correct, but it is an interesting point nonetheless.

I do know one thing though: a whole lot of us will rest much easier once VZW officially announces this bad boy!

It is possible there are two different test phones, or maybe Stericson's source rooted/over clocked his to check stability, and battery life, after all they were testing these things. I do think increased battery life is a huge plus. I would give up a little speed to gain a lot of batt life.

If VZW finds out, it will absolutely void your warranty. Stability will certainly become an issue as the clock speed is increased, but until this phone is out, and people get a chance to tweak it, we won't really know how high it will be able to be clocked and remain stable.

Agreed. Stability is a huge factor, but heat is as well. Heat is the root (pun intended) of all evil when it comes to electronics. I know that for every 5 to 10 degree rise above normal operating temperature life span can be reduced by at least 20 to 30% if allowed to operate at these temperatures for extended periods of time. At least with equipment racks filled with Audio Visual gear that is. Ten plus years of custom audio video installation will testify to this, and I took numerous manufacturers trainings on active thermal management.;) Heat kills!

I'm definitely with you on the battery life. I've already put some money aside to spend with Seidio when they release an extended battery for this thing.

My Moto-Q has nowhere near the processing power of today's smart phones, and it has a 1200mAh battery. I have to charge this thing all the time, even after a new battery was installed.

Absolutely true. I have found that heat will not only reduce the life of electronics, but also will effect stability. Unfortunately, my lessons have come at great cost as I taught myself how to OC my computer.

On a separate note, is your audio-visual training in home or commercial applications?

Hey guys! Here is a stupid question (from someone ignorant on processors): What does it mean if a processor is underclocked or overclocked? The Incredible is underclocked so is that bad? I did a google search and couldn't find anything. So could somebody please explain! Thanks! :)

Ouch! Fortunately, Qualcomm found a way to make the QSD's really efficient, but I still wish they went with a 1400mAh battery vs. 1300mAh!

From what I understand, authorized retailers can set their own pricing. However, I don't know how much luck you'd have on such a new/high end phone. But you could always try, right?

That's my thoughts exactly. I really don't THINK they'll give it to me, but it is a possibility...so I might as well ask. If it works I'll return and report :)

Both. I was the project manager for almost ten years for a high end integration company that specialized in dedicated home theaters, and whole house automation. I also freelance in the commercial arena for conventions, and other similar events. I now work full time for a global automation and control solutions manufacturer/distributor.

Ok all I am on my way to outta state, good thing is that I will going to where my buddy manages one of the VZW stores. He is also one of my sources. Trust me when I say this, I will be bugging him for every bit of information from him about this phone. Good thing is that I know his what kind of liquor that will make him talk. I am bringing out the big bottle for this one. I will try to post what I can get out of him tonight but it will prob be tomorrow since I will be way to hammered to post anything that is understandable.

Ha, I might even try to get him to unlock the store doors so I can do some snooping around.

Cya tomorrow!

ty apang! it would seem as if you have forgiven me! ;)

Basically, underclocking/overcolcking refers to adjusting the clock speed of a CPU. For example, the QSD8650 in the Incredible is designed to operate at 1GHz. Underclocking it simply means to reduce that speed through programming whereas overclocking means to increase the clock speed.

It's like tuning a car for performance (more horsepower, more heat, lower fuel economy), or economy (less horsepower, less heat, greater fuel economy).

Hopefully, this helps.:)

Anyone know the trick to getting a google voice invite? I've been waiting on google to invite me for 3+ weeks. Are they out of invites?

Easy,in the case of the Incredible it comes with a Quallcomm 1ghz Snapdragon processor. 1ghz meaning designed and built to run stable at 1000mhz (1ghz). Processoors speed can be turned up or down, up for faster speeds, and down to run cooler, and be more stable.

Means if the processor is 1ghz they might lower the speed to say 750mhz to improve battery life while giving up processing speed. That is underclocking...Overclocking is the opposite. People overclock and increase performance but reduce battery life or consume more power.

Beat me to it, and with a better explanation I might add.:)

The processor in this phone is designed to run at a maxiumum of 1Ghz. Underclocking means the maximum allowed speed would be less than what it was designed for. So for this phones, it was believed at one point that the maximum speed was going to be underclocked to 750Mhz. You probably wouldn't notice the difference most of the time but if you started running a bunch of apps simultaniously, it would be slower. The upside is that it doesn't use as much power so the battery life would be better. Overclocking is the opposite, making the processor run faster than what it was designed to do. It'll make the phone faster but uses more battery and can cause overheating if your not careful.

EDIT: Looks like a few others beat me to it. I guess that's what happens when you have a thread this large.

Steven, as always, your post was most gentlemanly, and made a great point. Post no.9 was flat out hilarious though!:D

Indeed!

It was gentlemanly outwardly, as I feel as if courteous responses are taken more seriously. Inwardly, I was thinking some awful sexist things. ;) :p
