Root [GUIDE] Unbrick OR Unroot LG Motion 4G [KDZ]

Alrighty, So it seems Sammyz is the go to guy when it comes to these kind of things. Well I updated my phone through OTA since I didnt know you could do it through PC (this was like 3 hrs ago, booted my phone and it said there was an update so i did it that way). Now my question is, should I do it through PC? Will downloading that 500 file do more good to my phone than just the 13mb my phone downloaded through it's server? And about rooting, I know some benefits are removing pre-installed applications and maybe making more room on the device itself? Also I can use apps that require the phone to be rooted right, what are some must have apps for a rooted phone? As a first timer, is it difficult to do?

It wouldn't hurt to flash via PC. I had my mom update via OTA, I updated via PC and this time it seems LG didn't screw up the OTA like they did with the D firmware OTA.
But I trust KDZ over OTA. OTA could easily mess up..

It is not difficult at all to root.
Just install the apk file from the thread, then extract the zip from the thread and double click root (or root.bat)
Also make sure you install drivers and reboot PC before attempting to root.

Can you upgrade to E and flash cm10 on E.... or is D mandatory for flashing cm10? dont know if this is the place to ask just curious

Any pics made after backup would be lost if your default location is internal memory.
I recently found out that my unbrick guide erases internal memory.

Do you think there is any chance I could recover those deleted files assuming that free space hasn't been written over? Could I safely remove the internal sd card and a scan it with a program to recover lost files? I've used those programs on my PC successfully in the past, but since this phone uses MTP rather than mass storage mode i would physically have to remove the internal sd card to scan it. Sorry if this is off-topic.

That would require hardware hacking, and the chance of doing that successfully is very slim. And the internal sdcard is not an actual sdcard if you look at it physically. It would be a small chip on the motherboard IF the internal sdcard is physically separated from the storage memory for the operating system, which I doubt.

Q: Do you think there is any chance I could recover those deleted files assuming that free space hasn't been written over?
A: It's possible, but unless you're familiar with the Linux command line, not very probable.

Q: Could I safely remove the internal sd card and a scan it with a program to recover lost files?
A: No, but you could get an nand backup image of the /data partition. Then scan that backup image for the lost files.

You would need to use forensics tools like magicrescue, or another program listed on this page: Recover Deleted Files in Linux - LINUX For You

Thank you for your responses. I did a nand backup before my brick/factory reset so I'm gonna look into that. I restored from that backup and my pictures did not show up. Anyway thanks for the idea :)

What to do....not able to do step 9. on the unbrick/unroot process
"9.Encrypt cab -> kdz Program will freeze up. DO NOT EXIT until program says Done!!! Otherwise it won't finish converting."

my problem is this...i cant resize the window to get to the ENCRYPT CAB. (tab/thingy to click) thanks for any suggestions!!

Change your screen resolution.
Which windows are you running?
Windows 7? XP? Vista?

Can you make it higher?

Computer can always update you whether rooted or not, you could be running CM10 in your phone and it will update fine, except you would have to factory reset after to fix boot loop.

I finally tried the update from the computer since I am not rooted anymore. I made it to a kdz file but then when I press start upgrade it starts unpacking then says extract files error. Any help please..

Convert the cab to kdz again. Once you think it is done, don't close it, but go look for the kdz and make sure it is the same size as the cab. Could also be a bad download.

How big is the cab you have?
