Eris to v2.x, when?

It may be taking longer than projected for the update to come out but personally i'd rather them take a little longer getting the update out to us and have it be bug free than get an update with a ton of bugs in it that require more updates to fix.

While noble, this is mere speculation. With the profound silence from VZW, all we can say for sure is that one of their execs said we'd get an update in Q1 and we haven't :(

Just so you know, Windows XP STILL gets security updates today. OSs will never be bug free. They can be close to being as stable as possible, like Windows 98 was before it was phased out a few years ago, but it wasn't perfect either.

People still haven't come to terms that the Eris EOL is at the end of May, according to VZW, but it died only a few months after it came out. Possibly January with the MR2 update. The lack of a 2.1 upgrade doesn't indicate this, as newer phones on other carriers, like the CLIQ and Behold and other more powerful devices don't have the updates either.

I remember when members would say "when I got root...." Endless speculation on deleting apps, overclocking the CPU, etc. were rampant. How's that been working out? Done in from both ends? I think so.

..... being as how it is actively moderated.

Ha! Actively moderated? Just what are they moderating? Language - no. Content - no. On topic - no. This is like any other forum, as long as the conversation generates controversy or offers the opportunity for smart a$$ responses the forum owners love it. Hits = mo' ad revenue. This thread should have been closed a long time ago.

You are correct. I should not have left, "actively" in the phrase, "sometimes moderated" would have been a better phrase, I suppose.

But I don't hold expectations of moderated forums too high, at least forums that are so easy to join by nearly anyone with a computer.

I do have my hot buttons, the things that concern or irk me, and I'll post about them from time to time. Cussing just disappoints me to a great extent, as it diminishes the entire website, in my opinion.

Having said that, I do participate here and for the most part find it a great forum cluster; interesting, informative, entertaining, satisfying in the sense of being able to contribute once in a while, and diverse.

The only other boards I am on is the Philadelphia Eagles message boards. But there, certain words are automatically filtered. Its not like mods have to read every post searching for foul language. You can type a word in a message, and when you click post, it just wont show up.
They hired Dick Jauron, and you cant even type his name. When you click post, it shows as D Jauron even though you type Dick.

Yes, we used filtering software at a forum cluster I hosted for six years.

Once in a while there were attempts to get by it with intentional misspellings of swear words, so we'd just watch for those and eject the user who did that, usually temporarily, sometimes permanently.

Why pollute forums with that stuff? Arguments and personal attacks are bad enough, but dirty language in an online forum about cell phones?

I actually think the mods here do a pretty good job -- if the intervention were too heavy-handed, all it would do is irritate people and impede the free flow of conversation. And as for so-called profanity, it's only irritating if the recipient chooses to be irritated by it. Choosing to let it irritate you just empowers the person who typed it.

Now, to bring things back on topic, here's a thought about the potential upgrade. My guess is that the first sign we'll have that it's on the way will come not from VZW, but from the Android Market -- all those copy-protected apps that have been invisible to those running 2.1 will suddenly reappear. When VZW tells the Market that 2.1 on the Eris is official, that will be a pretty definitive sign that things are about to happen.

I just got off the phone with Verizon. The lady asked me about my Droid update. I explained the problems that I am having. I also asked about the Eris. She said that she could not comment on the Eris update officially but that I was on the right track that it will be released. This is just what I was told so who knows the complete truth. Just thought that I would share this.

I work for Verizon marketing, and I can tell you the following. I have posted before so you know I am real and legit.

As of today, the Droid Eris has been discontinued. It will not ever be upgraded to 2.x. We are now just selling out stock, all new orders from us to them are canceled.

Reason (heres your scoop) on 4/29, we are releasing the HTC Incredible, another Android device even more powerful than the Motorola Droid, at the same Eris price point. We also will eventually release the Nexus One, but testing has revealed issues with the phone and no release date is currently available.

So folks, don't be paying a ton of money for a used Eris. They are going to be worth about 100 dollars in a month. Again, we will not be furnishing any sw upgrades to the Eris as enhancements. The only upgrades would be to fix issues that may arise.

Also, it is true... we have received 3 CDMA iPhones for testing right here in Dublin. What does that mean? Well, we've tested phones that have never made it to market. But this surely is a sign that we are up to something with Apple. I have yet to test one myself, but these 3 phones do exist. And to all the posters who say Apple is exclusive to ATT, I can tell you first had that agreement ends on July 1. Only the iPad is exclusive to Apple beyond that point.

There's your Verizon scoop for the month. Sorry for hiding my contact info, but again... I work there and can be fired for releasing this information.

The mods do do a good job here imo

fwiw i do not use filters on my forums...

It's pretty free-wheeling, Caddyman.

But, aside from the occasional mention here and there, what can be done is "ignore" feature on the most crass posters here. What I do not like about that is the irony of some of them being quite valuable contributors to the forums most of the time.

My concern is that it's just ugly.. it is degrading to the whole place. If there is a place for using gutter language, maybe it's the gutter but it is not in forums that seek to come across as informative and useful, in my opinion.

I think that the language stuff can be addressed by a mod in a PM with, "please make your point in a post without the foul language" along with a winking smiley or whatever.

Then, if the same member does it again, a week or so of no posting privileges; the population here will not suffer, believe me, with these measures.

That guy looks like an escapee from the asylum Jacob was being wheeled through in, "Jacob's Ladder."

Precisely Frisco, in my opinion, if used in the right context any curse word should be able to be typed....but ymmv.

every since reading this post here, i turned the censors off on my boards and never looked back.

That post is about freedom of speech, at its core. I disagree with freedom of speech in a controlled environment such as a forum, similarly as I disagree with freedom of moving your bowels in a controlled environment such as a class room or side walk.

There are rules here. Why? Why have any moderation or elements of decorum? If the only reason is to make sure nobody wants to leave, then you're inviting what we see in here on a regular basis which makes the place seem less than it is at its core: a place for information exchanges and expression, along with opinion, not a place for gutter behavior.

I hope so. I am seriously hoping it helps with the lagging UI. I like what the Eris can do, but I think it just does it slowly :)--especially when dialing.
