Root System update

So would it take much effort to get this new stuff supported by an aftermarket kernel. Say... BT?

I tried flashing 16.3 and it also was a no go.
Hmm, does this mean that roms like Neggablue that run other kernels (such as BT) will have issues if they do the update?
I haven't seen anything in the OTA that should affect flashing kernels or running other ROM's.

What ROM and bootloader were you using when you tried to flash BT 16.3?

You've all given me food for thought, thanks. I think regardless of whether or not I want to continue with a rooted stock ROM, the more important thing I need to look into is whether or not MyBackup Pro can successfully restore all my stuff. This is easy enough to test; I have a nandroid backup of the clean stock ROM with the November OTA. So I think I can do this:

  • Full MyBackup of current ROM
  • nandroid current ROM (just in case!)
  • Restore clean Stock ROM
  • MyBackup full restore from current ROM
  • See what breaks...

I would certainly have less trepidation about doing yet another RUU if I knew I could restore my stuff. Thanks again all!

When I read through your steps, they didn't make sense to me. A nandroid restore over a nandroid restore erases everything you had and replaces it with the new nandroid, such that if your settings were preserved in your initial backup, you'd simply overwrite them with your "new" backup.

Yes, you're totally right. My steps are wrong, they won't do what I want.

I'm on the newest ota. I just tried anthrax 3.6.4 and BT 16.3.

Both broke WiFi.
Interesting...

They may have changed something in the WiFi drivers for the new kernel that makes the BT/Anthrax drivers incompatible with the updated ROM. It might have something to do with the changes implemented for the "network optimization", which heavily involves WiFi management.

This is definitely worth investigating further. You had no problems with WiFi when you were running the updated stock kernel, right?

It looks like My Backup Root will do exactly what you're looking for as far as your settings are concerned (and for free). Backup your settings with that app (if you want to backup apps, either My Backup Pro or Titanium Backup will work great for this).

After that,

1) nandroid backup your current setup

2) If you've installed the November OTA, flash SetMainVersionLow from recovery.

3) Lock your bootloader (from bootloader): fastboot oem lock

4) Download and run the RUU

5) Take the November OTA and the current (March) OTA

6) Reboot to the bootloader and run: fastboot flash unlocktoken Unlock_code.bin

7) Install the superuser binary

8) Restore your backups

9) ???

10) Profit

If someone can post a system dump of the rom set up with the latest ota, I'll give you guys a rooted stock :) I don't have Virgin-Mobile or I would do it myself
Actually, what's needed is a flashable unrooted stock ROM, although a rooted stock ROM would probably be useful too. The unlimited.io guys changed their process so that now they want an unrooted stock ROM.

What type of system dump do you want? Will a nandroid of the updated unrooted stock ROM work?

Thanks for offering to help out.
