Hi guys

Just bought a Samsung Galaxy S3 so am very new to all this. Im 99% certain its been rooted but when I load CWM Manager I get the following message

'This version of CWM Manager should be used with CF-Root v5.0 or newer'

Ive no idea what to do but heres my phone details

Model no: GT-I9300
Android version: 4.1.2
Baseband version: I9300NELK2
Kernel version: 3.0.31-742798
se.infra@SEP-111 #1
SMP PREEMPT Sat Dec 22 17:04:04 KST 2012
Build number: JZO54K.I9300XXELLA

Any idea of how I fix this with a step by step guide?

Cheers

ROM Manager is NOT recommended with Samsung devices. They have been known to cause a ton of issues. It is much better to use recovery or ODIN to flash ROMs.

If you're just curious if it is rooted, download Goo Manager. It tests for Root upon startup.

Thanks for all your replies

Ive used Odin before on my Galaxy Tab 2

Being a complete noob to this im not sure what to select in Goo Manager

I also want to debrand it as it has '3' network on startup

Whats best to get rid of CWM Manager and debrand it then root it?

Thanks guys

Its now got a Vodafone sim in it if that makes any difference

Would this be an ok guide to use to flash firmware on or is there one on here?

Are you only gona be using official firmware mate or do u think youll end up putting a custom rom on?

I'll definately be rooting it with a custom rom!

I want sixaxis running on it so can use my ps3 controller for games. Just bought HDMI cable for it today to use on the big screen. Want to get as much as possible out of it. Am already very impressed with it as ive just got rid of a Nokia N8 running symbian which is so poor in comparrision!

Id forget about the Samsung firmware then and use a root method that installs custom recovery at the same time. Then u can flash a rom

How do i do that exactly? Its all very new to me this and dont want the risk of bricking it.

Was following what Pothers said

Hope someone knows/remembers what method i used lol... it was with odin and it rooted and installed Clockwork Mod custom recovery. Think the actual process is as risk free as flashing official firmware tbh mate. Youre gona have to flash a custom recovery anyway if you wana use a rom
To use SixAxis, i think you only have to be rooted though and dont need a custom rom..

Wow I am a complete noob lol so much to take in hence me coming on here

I was only aware of rooting/unrooting

Whats the advantages of using a custom rom?

Customisation, optimisation, etc. No need to worry about custom roms until u get a feel for android and see things that youd like to be different tbh.
Id follow the guides in this thread if i was you, for now lol, and youll be rooted (so u can use sixaxis and other cool apps) and have unbranded firmware

Welcome to the forum.

Since you're rooted there's no need to flash back to stock. Dowload philz recovery from here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2002953
You need the .tar i9300 version. Then put the .tar in pda in Odin, put your phone into download mode and flash. You can then make a nandroid and efs backup through recovery and backup your apps with titanium backup or similar and then flash the ROM of your choice.

Or download to phone and flash via Mobile Odin - paid version on Play Store, or free version on xda but you'll also need the flash kernel from post lower down on first page v5 was latest version last time I checked.

Can be safer than using download mode if your emmc chip is predisposed to sudden death syndrome check thread here

Many thanks guys! Already done it now :) Flashed unbranded firmware then put root firmware on. Was fairly easy!

My one moment that had me worried was when i was in download mode my pc lost connection with the phone. Luckily it wasnt writing the firmware at the time. No idea why it did this. Would it be because the phone was slightly below 80% battery charge? It worked fine when I reattached at 96%

Cheers Mike

Yeah it might have been the battery, a lot of phones will refuse to flash below a certain level. If you haven't done already I'd still suggest flashing philz recovery. It's the best recovery out there and doesn't contain the brick bug of cwm

How would I flash Philz recovery? Take it its the exact same way I did what ive done? btw CWM has been removed when I flashed recent root

Dont suppose anyone uses mame4droid with sixaxis do they? Just having trouble assign controls for 2 controllers. Got the 2 connected via sixaxis but when in mame4droid I cant assign seperate controls for controller 1 and 2
