Root throwing in the towel

First, let me thank everyone who tried to help me with S-off but I give up. I have done everything suggested to me. Got the drivers to install and adb interface to install but control bear still hangs in the testing adb connection part of the program. Yet, if I tell adb to reboot the boot loader , it recognizes it just fine and follows command. I'm done worrying about it

I'm sorry to hear that. Did you try making the Ubuntu LiveCD? There is no such thing as drivers for the phone...with Ubuntu, it just plain works.

Aw come on man, don't give up! You're severely limiting your options if you don't go S-OFF. You don't know what you're missing.

I'm in the process of downloading the .iso for the live cd. Just frustrating to have to go through so much crap just to install jb when I used to be able to just install it on my Optimus without having to mess with all this

Don't get frustrated, it's well worth the reward. Never having to worry about that aspect or be restricted by it again is pretty sweet. I've flashed tons of different roms and i've never had to change a thing hboot related since s-off.

Use ubuntu, I was having issues about a week ago s-off ing one for a friend.

Popped in a live cd and got it on the first try.

It's frustrating but well worth it.

No need to throw in the towel...

I've just written a new guide that will help you set up Linux (very easy, if you get stuck just let me know).

Also, which guide were you following for S-OFF?

Was your phone in "fastboot USB" mode?

Anyway, here's the guide:
http://androidforums.com/evo-v-4g-all-things-root/702959-easy-linux-primer-getting-s-off-linux.html

So I was reading the guide you provided. Do I need to be on wifi in order to use the programs? If so, I have no wifi available in my area

If it's anything like I did to get s-off using Ubuntu, then no. You just have to be able to download them obviously. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

This is correct. You just need internet access to download the files. A wired connection will work automatically.

ok I got the liveDVD burned and successfully installed. When inside Firefox, I downloaded the smaller of the required files but every time I try the larger, the page automatically won't load..... getting closer lol

Well installed is the wrong word I guess. I got Linux running. Also, do I need to download control bear again in Linux ?

No. Open the file browser and navigate to the files then copy them to the home folder. The home folder contains the Downloads, Videos, Documents, etc folders.

Once they are in the home folder, right click on them then select extract here.

Ok so I got the files copied and unzipped but when I right click in the easy linux folder I don't see a open in terminal command?

Nope. Ctrl-alt-t will open the terminal, and you'll be in the home directory.

ls will give you a list of all files and folders so you can verify you are in the correct directory.

cd ~/Easy\ Linux will get you into Easy Linux (if that is the name of the folder).

But when I try your command earlier to get to the easylinux folder , it says there is no such file or directory. I appreciate the help. I'm totally new to Linux

How did you create and move the files to that folder?
Is this part of the live dvd environment or your hard drive?
Keep in mind everything you do while in the live dvd environment is temporary and resides in ram. If you reboot, it's all gone unless you save it to the hard drive.

I copied them from where I had earlier downloaded them in Windows, then right clicked on them in the home folder and told it to unzip here

Ok. Are the fastboot, adb, etc inside another folder, or directly in the home folder.

You said something about an easy linux folder.

I'm talking about the easy linux folder created after unzipping the easy linux zip that the guide said to download. Adb and such isn't in that folder. Getting frustrated
