Android newbie with Chinese tablet needs intro

Hello everyone. This might be a common situation - I recently bought a Chinese tablet. Mele M7, Allwinner A31 quad-core CPU. Good performance, good price. Now I have it hooked up to my wifi router, but I'm struggling to get things initialized. There is no manual from the maker that I can find. I have looked at the manual for a Nexus 7, but not all of the controls match up.

I use Ubuntu Linux on my desktop, and the system is the same regardless of the hardware. This is my first experience with a portable device, I haven't joined the smartphone club yet, but I assumed that android controls, (4.1), would be the same across different platforms.

The answer would be to add another forum for this product, but that doesn't seem workable given the number of Chinese makers of these devices.

Anyway, if anyone here knows of a general tutorial for android, or jellybean, I would appreciate where to find it. Thanks.

The Nexus 7 manual should give you a general overview of how to use Android. Given the Nexus 7 runs Android in its purest form, don't know how you can get more general than that.

What exactly are you trying to do on your tablet that you can't find in the manual? For most things, you really just need to explore your tablet as specific settings may be in different locations for different devices.

TBH the only real thing in common between Android and the Ubuntu OS, is that they both use the Linux kernel. What happens at the user level can be rather different, e.g. Ubuntu uses the X window system, Android does not. I use Linux Mint with KDE, which can be rather different to Ubuntu's default Unity UI.

Yes, there are literally 10,000s of them. Although many of them are not actually manufacturers, they're only trading companies. Distributing and selling devices from thousands of unknown manufacturers, and they're just having their own branding and customisations.

I'd do what @rui-no-onna suggested, have a look at the Google Nexus 7 manual, that should cover many things you'll need to know.

I wouldn't know off the top of my head. What make and model is your "china tab"?

I think Uberdroid has been made for some of the more common known devices, like the Allwinner based ones. But the thing is there's like 10,000s of these Chinese devices now, many of them with their own unique customisations and variations.
