Android Enthusiast
PHONE IS NOT ROOTED.

Am looking for a way to run my pc through the phone for internet.

Using a usb cable is not a problem ... any suggestions for a good FREE

app that will work with warp

thanks all

Thank you LilBit.......My situation does not allow me to afford cable or fios...I've been fortunate to be able to "borrow" some free wifi....however as expected it finally was terminated last night so I'm back to dial up.....I actuall just installed the 1 click wi fi but cant seem to get it to work

Look around the play store and see what other people have installed, you may still get something to work yet, Trial and error!! Good Luck iram:)

well thanks for all advice......since I at the mement only have dial up at home Im using my offices computer to relay this..

I downloaded a buch of apps to try...maybe should not have all installed at same time though ( any thoughts on that?)

I'm trying the following:
aaa Tether Free (no root)
barnacle wifi tether
auto usb tethering
1 click wifi teher(no root)
Pdanet+ (which seems to also add foxfi addon along with it)
I dont know why I seem to also have Pda net 3.50 installed (dont remember when I did that one)

+++++++++++
so far I thought I had 1 click wifi working last night...but then it seemed to stop working or I just lost coverage....needs further testing.

Hopefully will be able to tese PDA net+ this evening...aparently I need to download part of the program to my pc 1st for it to work.

Go iram!!:D I know you will have something working soon!!;) But Yeah, be careful about installing to many of those apps at once,:) Could interfere with each other somehow.:ahhhhh:

Thanks LilBit........I uninstalled all except PDANET+ Im using it right now so far so good. It may not be fios or cable but at the moment its better than dial up. Of course I'd better keep eye on data usage i'm at 680 mb with 12 days left to new cycle.

Fortunately email is most important to me and some browsing. dont do much if any downloading so hope fully wont get close to being throttled. Will use for a few days and up date post

PDA Net is great! I used it before I got rooted.
However, PDA net won't let you access secured sites after a certain amount of data using the free version. If you want such access, you will have to pony up for the paid version.

Well so far its working (pdanet+).........yeah the data limit is a pain......
but wont complain just yet....I'd like to test it more before i need to pay for it...I'd like to check it out for a while and compare it to boosts data limit before it slows u down.
_____________

Would any one know of any other "free" apps that may work on WARP that do what PDANET+ does?....to test them out

In a previous post I mentioned I had downloaded (but have removed them before any real testing the following:

aaa Tether Free (no root)
barnacle wifi tether
auto usb tethering
1 click wifi tether(no root)

I wasnt sure if these were what I was looking for. I dont mind connecting phone via usb All I wanted to do was run internet via phone for a while until I can figure out another affordable alturnative.

Thanks

AN UPDATE:

PDANET+ seems to work ok but it apparently has around a 10mb download limit I think before it shuts down

I tried "EasyTether" free, but wont let https sites to work. One of my email sites is https so thats no good.

Now Im trying "Auto USB Tether" so far seems to be working ok. Not sure if there is any time out or usage limits.

Of course non of them with only 3g ( avg 3 bars) is close to what I was used to but at least it is faster than dial up at least for email.

Im trying to download some items now to test it Its fluctuating in the very low KB range vs mb range with borrowed wifi

still with all he fuss about 3g and 4g I gather neither is close to cable or fios. It just took me all day to download a file that would have taken maybe less than hr

"PDA Net" works for most non-rooted devices :) it requires you to install the software on your PC as well as your phone.

And they just changed that too. Plus PDANet uses FoxFi for their Bluetooth tethering and before FoxFi made their last set of changes to support USB tethering you could use FoxFi to tether via BT DUN to Window Mobile 6 devices.

I've contacted FoxFi about their latest changes that do not work with WM6 devices and I have not heard anything back yet. I'm just lucky I happened to keep an older version of FoxFi around that I could use instead of their newer version.

If you use the Slingplayer on a WM6 device you don't burn up your data as fast as the Android version of Slingplayer does and on the WM6 device you even have the option for Audio Only regardless of how old your Slingbox unit it.

Slingplayer for Android only lets you use Audio Only with their newer devices and I think that sucks especially if you do not have the unlimited data plan.

Hmmm, I wonder if there is a thread about the Android Slingplayer around.

ZingBot Thanks for info... followed your link ....While I havnt tried it yet Clockwork Mod Tether looks interesting but also appears to have about a 20 mb limit similar to Pdanet+ which has apparently a 10mb limit.

However there is a reference to Notification Toggles having a way of accessing usb tethering...I run that app and did find the usb toggle.... will have to try it tonight when I get home.

I would have thought that the speeds would be a touch better though. Maybe not like cable but its only marignally better than dial up

Ok tried briefly notification toggles set up usb toggle. It seems to work.

So next couple of questions are>

If notification toggles and auto usb tethering seem to work with no apparent limits what makes the others such as PDANET+ and clockwork mod better.

Other than maybe they allow wifi tether also is there something they are adding that I am missing or is it just personal preference.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Now I also seem to feel that this usb tethering while better than dial up appears still much slower than cable.

Any reccomendations on a Speed test app.....I did down load one called "Speed Test" but if any one has suggestions on a better one I would like to compare them.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Am I to assume that other than location there may not be much I can do with 3g at my present location to enhance the speed?

That's about the size of it iram:( It simply is what it is.:p

thanks......I just need some time to experiment with this set up........If only cable or fios wasnt so expensive.....
