Guys, i think we got ourselves a problem. Virgin, Boost, Sprint are doing an audit on all customers checking for root on their phone. I have no f'n clue how theyre going to do it. Somebody had it happen to them. They suspended his service and he had to return to stock, take his phone to a sprint store and show that his phone was not rooted. Now this doesnt mean he could of just rerooted. Second offense--no service. Terminated. I encourage you guys to keep stock and unroot ready. Im still learning about this as the news about it progresses. Like i said, no freaking clue how they are doing it. But i would keep stock, unrooted absolutely ready to go.
EDIT: Yes, i know this has nothing to do with rooting your triumph or installing cm7 but we ,i guess, belong, to virgin mobile. And we all know we have root.

Awesome, great way for them to get rid of loyal paying customers.

From what I've found on this they are continuing to crack down on wifi/usb tethering, though it is clear they don't like users to root their phones claiming it could "harm their network" I haven't seen anything about any of these carriers auditing for root access, though they have continued to look for users "abusing tethering" which is absurd since it is supposed to be unlimited data (but that is a different rant). That being said if they complain about my rooted phone I will just jump ship and probably go to tmobile where I can get a phone that will actually get updates

If they mess with you guys, tell them you'll drop their ass like a hot potato. It should work. Just don't abuse the tethering. Even I use tethering even though it's not in my plan, but I don't ever use over 5 GB total of data. I also only use tethering when someone else or I need internet and the internet doesn't work. Happens all the time on campus.

That's ridiculous. It's like my isp saying they won't give me service unless my computer only has a guest account.

Look, with enough said, I don't think it'll be a big deal. If it does happen, blow up on them and specifically tell them it's their f'ing fault for not giving us updates, and we are just simply keeping the phone updated. Nuff said.

Funny, right now Vmobile is offering a $100 credit for anyone jumping ship the opposite way, from T-mobile to them :p

^I agree... from what I've heard/read, Vmobile is just taking the same stance as every other carrier out there. I doubt they will "crack down" on people unless you're obviously abusing their network, it'd be inefficient on their end to devote time and money on a crusade that will in turn cost them subscribers. They are simply shaking their fingers, so if something does go wrong they can wipe their hands clean and say "we told you so".

I'm not suprised they're acting vanilla like this... I mean, have you met a virgin who wasn't? And they're not just any virgin, they're Virgin with a capital V! :D

They can easily see as someone said earlier if ur using tethering, cause your phone will pull way to much data, other devices like HTC phones and I believe iPhones all have hidden folders or the bootloaders which record if u wiped the phone and installed different software, but either way they really can't do anything, rooting a cellphone and installing a custom rom is 100% legal(atleast in pa where I'm at) so the only way they can cancel ur service is if they opt to use the "we reserve the right to not serve whomever we wish" or however its stated lol unless u have a Contra t plan, if ur under contract and there's something about rooting in the contract then that's different

Cellphone companies did however get a law passed where unlocking phones is now 100% illegal unless you get permission from ur old carrier ex. Unlocking a phone from sprint to work on at&t or someother network

Currently the new law is supposed to only apply to contract phones cause according to the phone companies it doesn't matter if u paid $400 for a phone, while ur under there contract ur basically leasing there phone is how they put it

i usually dont tether unless i have to absolutley dl something from my laptop. If i can get it off the internet, i use my phone. The only time i could see vm possibly watching me was when i was dl torrents. Took me 2 weeks to get 3 gigs downloaded:D

Yeah, that ruling was about unlocking the phone if it was still under contract. It's to stop people from taking their phone that they got a super subsidized deal on and moving it to another service. It didn't touch rooting. I have seen language in a few carriers agreements that say the same kind of thing. You are not allowed to use modified software on our service.

I think it's mostly about tethering, personally. One easy way to see if you are tethering is to watch the packets. If they are for Internet Explorer, or another desktop only browser, then that's obvious. And I'm sure there are more chunks of info in the packets. Like maybe MAC address.

Sprint does NOT care if you're rooted. Its in their corporate policy to warn you of the dangers and then let it be.

Chances are, your friend was seriously violating the terms of service

Considering they still sell the Galaxy Nexus I don't know why they would.

They can crack down on data usage. Unlimited data is limited by fair usage rights in the terms. Why would they have you bring you phone in to a store to have it checked if they could detect? They are only looking for SU

As for enforcing terms of service for virgin mobile on just rooting. Since they mentioned the word rooting and that it would violate terms, they failed to define what rooting is to them. In Australia it's slang for having sex. Maybe they did mean it that way. Your screwed. ;)

If they find your phone has root they suspend your service and you must return to stock. Then go to a sprint store, tell them why your there, and theyll start your service back up

I've directly told them my phone was rooted multiple times.

I've never had to do anything like that. In fact, like I mentioned above its their corporate policy to treat a rooted phone like any other phone.

I imagine your friend had something else going on. Sprint doesn't just make you unroot for no reason.

I'd rather hear it from a more credible source rather than listening to "a friend of a friend..." stuff going on :listen:

Ok.... Well... for anybody that read this and gives a damn, i was just putting this out there so everybody knew that something WAS going on and to be careful.

So far this sounds like BS. Don't take it personally.

I mean, it's you and someone you know that have heard of this happening. Out of how many Virgin Mobile customers with rooted phones?

Until many, many more people start rioting and reporting this, I'm gonna have to call this one busted

This isn't about people saying your lying or not believing you.

Were just trying to figure out if this is a one time occurrence because your friend had certain circumstances or if they truly are going after rooters like your friend seems to think.

Okay, so I found out how they caught the guy and suspended his service.

He was not on a custom rom, he just had root. Well, he wanted to go check his minutes on the My Account bloatware app. When he clicked on it, it asked for Superuser permissions. Without thinking, he clicked allow. Not too long after that...his service got suspended. So apparently, theyre using SU to find us. Now you may be thinking, ok so what about my custom rom? How do they know about that? Well somehow they can tell if you have OC'd.

If they were going after people i am sure i would have heard something i have sent them 6+ phones that were rooted with custom roms and tether a couple gigs a month

They dont check phones that get sent back. They automatically flash a stock image so no customer data is left on the phone.

Well this is easily repeatable... but I still suspect we haven't heard the whole story.... was he tethering and pumping a ton of data through the phone? There might be a function inside that app that checks for root on high data use devices.

Checking one's account would seem like a common thing.... if that is what was happening on all phones, there would be a sticky on every android forum saying 'Don't do this!'
