Root Have you guys heard?!

Okay, so I found out how they caught the guy and suspended his service.

He was not on a custom rom, he just had root. Well, he wanted to go check his minutes on the My Account bloatware app. When he clicked on it, it asked for Superuser permissions. Without thinking, he clicked allow. Not too long after that...his service got suspended. So apparently, theyre using SU to find us. Now you may be thinking, ok so what about my custom rom? How do they know about that? Well somehow they can tell if you have OC'd.

The My Account app requested root?? Wtf?

I just restored my stock backup (forgot how bad it was) and tried My Account. It just opened a browser page. No superuser access.

It's really old though (from 2011). I wonder if they updated it? Try to check out version number if possible, next time you see the dude.

Well it wasnt a personal friend of mine but ill try to get the version # for ya.

I can tell you it wasn't the stock My Account app that came with the MT. I use that a couple times a month to check my accounts. Was it a Sprint phone?

No, he has vm. He does have a GSII though. That wouldnt make a difference. He was on CM10.1 and he went to check his minutes. SU comes up. Clicks allow, a little bit later, service gets taken away.

So the My Account was on the SII? If so, I think they have a different app, and if so, could just use our My Account app instead. I might go and talk to b_random14 and see what he knows.

They can't suspend service just for having root access. It's been ruled completely legal for years now. That hasn't changed no matter how the carriers feel.

The carriers/manufacturers may not like it, but they can't do anything besides not honor warranties over it (even then many of them still honor the warranty when it isn't software related).

Sprint even honors service on rooted phones covered by their extended TEP warranty. It was in the press when it happened.

As far as TOS, whenever a carrier contract with anti-rooting clauses have been before the courts, they've been struck down as unconscionable contracts.

There's nothing to be alarmed at here.

Don't believe everything you see on YouTube, that's how World War I started.

Like my friend the Dalek, I think that we're done here.
