Root NexTheme ESE81 R3 Release (4/21/10) - New Goodies!

Excellent work Fab, very impressed with this ROM. I'm currently on NexBeast though just because Bugless ran so smooth for me. Are you gonna continue to update that as well? Also do you have plans to make this into a MetaMorph theme? And one lasrt thing, I'm overclocked now at 1gig and what is a reasonable temperature?

Yeah, there's some funk going on with TiBu lately. It's a shame, but I don't think it's the ROM's fault, and it is probably very difficult for the developer to code it so that you can translate the data backups (either system or app) between different ROMs.

Though I think just an app restore would work just fine (but probably just as easy to let the market redownload them automatically)

Ahh, I was nto aware it was across the board. I should have seeing as there have been numerous updates to TiBu recently....

I was having some problems with TiBu last night, what I did was delete all of my app backups, then hit the fix problems button in TiBu, then back up all the apps again... that worked... The problem I was having is that all of my backups would give me errors when I went to check the backups in TiBu. After I did the above I was not getting any errors when I checked the backups...

Was gonna try that, but then I decided that I might as well start from scratch first, set every thing back up and then do all that with a new backup.

Thanks for the tip though - others will definitely find it helpful soon.

Depends - you talking idle temp, active use temp or heavy use temp?

Idle can be as low as 65-75 deg F, active use between 85 and 105 and heavy up to 115, but the right combination will get you to break 135 in a half second - like using Navigation and listening to Pandora simultaneously....

It also depends on the kernel and voltage, plus the apps you have running, and especially which apps are always running....

For some active use might be 3-4 apps whereas for others, including background app,s active or regular use can be 12 apps on the run....like my DROID.

I sit at about 95F doing regular things, I generally kill all tasks running before I sleep too. I'm using chevy's kernal too.

I just came off of sleep and checked and I was at 82.5F. Also my setCPU widget doesnt seem to be refreshing automatically like it used to, I manually have to go in it and refresh, any ideas?

Wanna know the last time I actually killed a task? As in using ATM / TK or any of the other apps or going into app mgmt and forcing it closed?

And I run a 1.2 GHz kernel on most ROMs that I keep amped up to 1.1 on ROMs that cannot handle the 1.2 and 1.2 where it can.

After a long time it was just idling at 77. Why dont you kill any tasks? And what is a safe speed to run? Is 1.2 smart or no?

safe? well, using SetCPU it never actually runs at 1.2 all the time - that is the purpose of SetCPU - to give you the speed you need when you need it and then crank it down a notch (or 5) when you don't.

As for OC, well, the CPU is rated at 600 MHz, Motorola ships the DROID at 550MHz, and really anything over it's rated speed will cause *some* shortening of life of the CPU. However, 1.2 is attainable without frying the CPU, just as it is possible to fry the CPU at 800 - depends upon the situation. If the CPU gets cooled enough then 1.2 can be safe - and likewise if the CPU is not able to dissipate the heat it generates even 800 can cause it to fry.

Damn, this thing is fast! After deleting several unused /system apps and running Sweeter Home 2, things happen instantly.

Still can't register my Facebook acct for contact sync and the backlight of the four hard keys is flaky, so I think I'll do a system wipe and reinstall today (withOUT TiBU restore).

QUESTION
This is pretty new to me and I find ADB cumbersome, so can I use either Root Explorer or Terminal Emulator to do the /system, /data, & /cache wipes?

Sweeter Home 2 isn't lagging at all for you? Interesting. Mine lagged a LOT compared to BB v.8, which is the only reason I'm not still using this beautiful ROM.

As to your question, I've found that by far the easiest way to do the wipes you ask about it to install ROM Manager (or at least ClockworkMod Recovery, which is a snap if you have ROM Manager) and use the Partitions menu in recovery mode to do the wipe.

Then, without having to reboot, you can install the ROM from anywhere on your SD card, without renaming it.

The only time it lags is when coming out of the lock screen. Hangs at a black screen for about 1-2 sec. Orientation changes, screen swipes, app launches, etc. are all blazing fast. Even launching the editor and making changes in edit mode are nearly instant.

FYI...running at 1 Ghz "performance" and deleted Amazon, HTC_IME, Live wallpapers, Helix, Launcher (home), Corp. Calendar, etc. Just stuff I never use. Task Killer generally reports around 40M free mem.

Hmmmmmmm, I had deleted all of the system apps you mentioned, and more, and I'm at 1.2Ghz O/C, but I experienced lag swiping between screens, particularly the up- and down axis, and more error messages and FCs on SH2. It may be that my SH2 is just "heavier" than yours (I have 5 docked apps with image files on top of each of those for the icons, 9 springboards, and tons of widgets on my main home screen, and docked apps with image files and tons of widgets on all of my other screens, as well). So far, the only ROM I've tried that has been able to handle my SH2 theme with no lag or other issues is that BB ROM.

I was having major problems w/ the R2 Release. Lots of FC's in lots of different apps. Helix Launcher kept FC'ing, and I was even having lockups & had to do several battery pulls a day. Was not amused, to say the least.

Then on a whim I tried the Fix Permissions utility inside ROM Manager, and I'll be damned if it didn't completely fix my phone. No more FC's in any app, no more lockups, Helix Launcher working great, and my phone has been running like a champ for the last 24 hrs.

Give it a try if you're having lots of FC's and lockups like I was.

I haven't had any FCs except those 1 or 2 you generally experience on a first app launch after flash. no errors, whatsoever (excepting that failure to recognize my facebook account, which isn't generating an actual error). Your SH2 sounds a fair bit heavier than mine, tho. I like to run my desktops pretty skinny. I've got about 10 springboards, 1 tray, and 12 widgets total in all ten screens. no image files except a smallish, static wallpaper.

Have you examined your image dimensions and file sizes? If the GPU is having to radically scale a bunch of images for each screen, that might chew up some cycles.

I have my main home screen widgets on an invisible springboard trigger, so I only see them when I press the trigger, and my main screen stays completely uncluttered.

That's a very good suggestion, but you see, I don't want to change my SH2 theme -- any ROM that can't handle my SH2 theme is not the ROM for me.

By the way, my apologies Fab, for hijacking this thread!

Fair enough, but (and not saying your theme is) forcing the GPU/CPU to scale down even one 32 bit color, 5 megapixel image to fit on a (at most) 24 bit color, .75 megapixel display (allowing for 854x854 wallpaper to fully cover both orientations and all ten screens) is terribly wasteful if performance factors high the priority list.

BTW, have you uploaded your theme to the SH site? I'd love to check it out. sounds pretty awesome.

Great job, Fab! Your ESE53 NextBeast is what I was using before I unrooted.

Has anyone tried the free75mb, free100mb, etc scripts?

If I run one of these scripts, my phone wont go haywire, will it? Please forgive me, but there's no way I'm going through 150 pages of the BB thread on alldroid to find out if it is a "safe" script to run.

Lol - Fab, you'll be happy (?) to know that the theme that mjones from the UD IRC Channel made (a blue NexTheme for ESE81 builds) works especially well in your ROM.

So, I suppose I can now say I run a Pete's BB 0.9 packaged and themed by Fab and rethemed by mjones via me....

I still haven't finished setting up all the stuff for all my apps, and that damned AppBrain is pissing me off - now I have like 10 more apps to install lol...

I'll try to have screenies tomorrow night.

I've started having a weird problem with this ROM. I reflashed yesterday and ever since, my lock button doesn't properly work. I press it to lock the phone and after about 5 seconds, it just gives me the home screen prompt. I can clear all data and flash a different rom and everything is back to normal. Then, if I put the ROM on it brings the problem back. Another odd side effect is my old walpaper returns with this ROM. I really love this ROM so if anyone has any ideas, I would really appreciate the help!

sounds like you are not doing a complete data/cache wipe and format.

I've even tried the format data, cache, system. That was the only way I could get it working with the other ROM. Then I put on this one and the problem was back, along with the old wallpaper.

Try going to spare parts and select "end button behavior", then select "go to sleep". I had the similar problem the first time I loaded a NexBeast ROM.

Also FWIW, I did a complete system/cache/data format thru ADB last night then reloaded this ROM and my problem with Facebook went away.

when i load new roms i normally boot into recovery. i then do 3 wipes. it sounds excessive but you will see sometimes in posts they ask you to do 2 wipes just to make sure you have no stray files. only thing i can think is you system is not being fully wiped.

That did the trick! Thanks so much for your help. I had forgot I changed that (and had no idea it was related to the power button). I feel like a complete noob now, but oh well. I guess it is an app setting, so no matter how many times I wiped the data/cache it wasn't going to rest. Thanks again!

Ok guys im having a little problem. I flashed this with rom manager. And now when i connect my phone to my laptop its not giving me the options for like debugging and mounting sd card. The original rom worked perfect. r2 isnt doing as well lol.

Any ideas?

Update. I have it to where it will give me mounting options now. But no debugging like last time. Never used that before so not worried about it.

Now i do have wireless and wired tethering options. But when i go to set cpu its only giving me max of 600mhz. Im not sure why. Should i reflash the kernel?
