Getting new samsung S2 galaxy today

So ive read some stickies, is rooting the equivalent of jailbreak I get it?

Sorry bear with me. I have never had a phone basically. (only a old flipflap phone)

I know there are some risks and I want to be sure I do it right and not brick the fella.

Would anyone be able to give advice if I run into trouble, cause Im kind of scaredycat when it comes to this.

But basically it's not hard to do should it? I will study the stickies some more ofcourse.

Do you need to update the phone to latest android? or root it before you do that etc?

I have a micro sim card however so I don't think I can start yet? or it may be done without.

Anyway, I got a manual and box in polish? I got the GT -I9100
Kinda weird since I orderd it here in netherlands.
 
I think I can do it.. have to wait untill I get my sim converted though..

Is it possible to make a backup of the original firmware? or is it unneeded?

Normally you make the backup BEFORE you unroot/unlock a device? Is the method described a backup after you unrooted it?

You can only do a nandroid and Titanium backup if you are rooted.
 
Ok well please take notice you are talking to a dummy basically. so you can make certain backups when it's rooted and when it's unrooted correct? You can do both? But is it necessary? Sorry if I am misunderstanding or overcomplicating.

Ahem, a "dummy" with only five posts who has already rooted his 'phone is undeserving of the title. ;)

Hopefully not necessary, but definitely prudent if you futz around with kernels and ROMS 'cos inevitably things go pear-shaped. :)

Standard practice when rooted would be to make a nandroid backup (via CWM recovery) of your current, stable setup. This copies all internal filesystem partitions and restoring it will reinstate the handset to the exact point it was at when the backup was made. Think of it as the "get-out-of-jail-card". :D

Apps and/or data are then backed up separately with something like Titanium Backup, allowing quick restoration of all installed user apps along with their associated data (settings, save games etc). This allows you to do a full wipe (factory reset), flash a fresh ROM, and quickly get back up and running after the initial device setup.
 
Ok so I am now doing it. I did everything according to

Im at Step 3.

Connect your phone, still in Download mode, to the PC using the USB lead. If you have successfully connected to Odin you should see the ID:COM box in Odin turn yellow or light blue, (depending on which version of Odin you are using).


How long should this take.. it doesn't show PASS. This is a screenshot I took of it:

it's okay. im scared to use triangle away though since I heard it can brick.. so I guess I won't do that.

Also have been encoutering a weird error... for example just now I press the big middle button while charging nothing happens I click all buttons on button etc. nothing happens. then screen goes white and the normally green charge icon purple..

Also something similair happend yesterday when I was just normal using phone, the entire screen's colours where scrambled mostly whitish, alike switching from 16 to 8 bits or something. Happend a few times, and it restored itself within a few seconds by pressing buttons, though once it completely froze.


Wth is going?
 
triangle away doesn't brick wen u follow the instructions, and its more than likely hardware related. My screen scrabbles when i turn it on, no biggie
 
The screen behavior to me sounds like one of the connecting ribbon cables for the display is not quite connected correctly, or there is a short in one of them. It could be a software problem, but it really sounds like a display issue.

You can easily remove the triangle with a jig as well. They are easy enough to make.

You will need a cheap micro USB cable ... the cheaper the better because you will be cutting out the micro USB connector with a razor knife (x-acto works just fine). Then you need to go to a Radio Shack and buy the 5-pack of 100K ohm resistors for $1.29 (you only need three, but 300k single resistors are harder to find) and a soldering iron with a fine point.

Slice the insulation off the cable and disconnect all the wires. Then you will need to solder the three resistors in series and connect the ends to pin 4 and pin 5 of the micro USB connector.

The connections will be (when viewing the connector as shown) the furthest most left connection on top (pin 4) and on bottom (pin 5)

You end up with this:

Once you've built your jig, then power off the phone. Pull the battery for a few seconds and replace it. Plug in jig and let the phone boot into download mode. (It won't do anything automatically now, it's waiting for download, so up to that point it's working as it should.) Then remove the jig, and press and hold vol. up/down and power until it reboots. Then release the power button but still hold the volume buttons and let it boot to recovery. Choose reboot and press power to select.

The yellow triangle should be gone now.

Or you can buy one on Amazon, if you're so inclined.

Well the fact is I started noticed it DIRECTLY after rooting it.. and 0 times before.. so that makes me wonder. I hope it's not hardware.. since I dont have warrenty now?? -.-

Ah, then it might be a kernel issue. You might want to consider going with a tried and true ROM like CM10 stable which will install it's own kernel.

Also I want to add that It just happend again Lunatic.. I thought maybe it's a ram issue when everything is full or something. I also notice inresponsiveness on the phone somtimes. It does remind me when I had this pc in the days when I didnt have enough ram and the whole GUI on the pc was fuked in colours cuz of it.

Also mostly the colours I see is white and brown.. and when I activate camera everything looks exactly like a negative of it, if you know what I mean. I took a photo. However the photo appeared negative. when rebooted it was taken normally.

I will try this CyanogenMod 10.

Some second-generation Samsung Exynos devices are potentially susceptible to a "superbrick" caused by performing a factory reset with the stock kernel, which effectively kills the internal memory in the device. It is highly recommended you do not perform this operation while using a stock kernel for safety reasons.
