Nu uh, this forum is good for the soul :) The tech forums you speak of do not necessarily yield all the great returns implied, nor can they with the current issues. New firmware is the solution. Verizon borked this and not the customers. No need to tinker due to Verizon's stinker ;) Let them clean the stanky mess.

Well, I just got done with a chat with Verizon.....they are aware of it and no ETA for a fix and are calling it Samsung's issue. I had a helpful rep that knew all about the issues we're having. Here is the relevant part of the chat with names removed to protect the innocent....

Please hold for a Support Representative to assist you.
Thank you for contacting Verizon Wireless.

Your Chat Session ID is XXXXXXXXX.

My name is XXXXX, how may I assist you?
Me: Hi XXXXX.Since the software update that was pushed to my Samsung Galaxy S3 last week, I am having terrible problems with reception. Often, when the phone is on 4G it will lock up and say the network is not available when I try and use any data.
Me: I no longer get any data reception in my office where I used to have no problems with getting 4G.
XXXXX: Hello XXXXXX!
XXXXX: I am sorry that you are having this issue.
XXXXX: Samsung is aware of this issue and is working urgently on a solution.
XXXXX: I have the same phone and the same issue!
XXXXX: I can help you with a factory reset.
XXXXX: That can help.
Me: I did the factory reset last night and tested the phone today. It made no discernible difference
Me: I really need the phone for work and right now it's not working.
XXXXX: I totally understand. I really do. I am having the same issue plus some other ones.
XXXXX: Samsung did recall that update, but it was too late.
XXXXX: I can provide you with their number if you like. This is the only fix that we currently have access to.
XXXXX: I can send you a replacement SIM
XXXXX: I can send you a replacement phone.
XXXXX: Or you can wait for the update...Would you like me to send a phone?
Me: Unless the fix is coming out tomorrow, I'd like the replacement phone. I imagine there is no timeline for the fix?
Me: Or do they have a date the fix will be out?
XXXXX: They do not. And as you can imagine, a lot of customers are upset about this, including me.
Me: Yes, I can imagine it's no fun doing your job right now. It's really frustrating. Could you send me a replacement phone then?
XXXXX: I am working on that.
XXXXX: What address would you like it sent to?

So then I just wonder why VZW couldn't push the previous firmware out to all the devices again rather than send replacement phones?

Either that makes too much sense and too easy to make their customers happy, or it will break their Trojan horse reason for the updates in the first place. They did not do this update out of the kindness and generosity of their hearts wasting money on a one year old device ;)

Well since being an android device user along with many other I suppose we have gotten used to fixing and solving our own issues instead of doing rain dances and rituals involving a chicken or a goat to please the carrier gods. But that's just us I can't remember the last time I've contacted my carrier to ask for any help of any sort. I wish ya luck perhaps a few more rain dances and what not will get them to rain them ota updates.

That would be the quickest way to get folks back to normal but what they are most likely doing is trying to keep the premium suite stuff and fix the radio issue then repush BMD3..

I just want BMB1 back at this point. Like I said before, I could just have them send a replacement phone but I have seen too many posts where folks received their replacement (refurbished) phone only to have either the same problem or completely different problems.

I am fairly sure the fix will be available for OTA sometime in July. I hope I am wrong.

not gonna brick their phone by flash a previous modem. aslong its for the verizon variant they are safer than a baby in a crib.

DroidViews | Manually Update Verizon Galaxy S3 SCH-I535 with Official JB OTA Package

all previous firmwares can be found here.

as far as the fear of having a rooted device with custom recovery if you want to be able to do flash/install such updates yourself than thats the only choice since carriers push ota/fixes when they please no matter how many beg and complain.

Thanks for this link it worked out great. I just followed the Download VRBMB1 4.1.2 Full Firmware and easy tutorial and everything is back to normal.

If I want to just get the MB1 radio back (I'm on MD3 ROM/MD3 radio now) and remain on MD3 ROM, what file do I flash in CWM?

So I am thinking of trying this although I really am clueless to all this.

Just to clarify what you did to make sure I understand it completely:

NOTE: my goal is to go from the current BMD3 back to BMB1

1. Your phone is unrooted (As is mine)
2. you downloaded (onto your external SDCard in your phone) the SCH-I535-VZW-I535VRBMB1-1360821900.zip
3. Then follow the "How to Install" directions:

OTA Update Package for Rooted SCH-I535:
If you got a rooted device, you can still update your phone

Yeah if youre unrooted and dont have a custom recovery installed, youll wana use a .tar file and flash it using odin with the phone in download mode (volume down)

Verizon, get your butt in gear and fix this. Please

Nooo dont wait for the machine to move, its time to overthrow these monsters and free our phones.. to decide their own destiny.. :p (sorry i watched a documentary about James Connolly lastnight lol)
seriously though, the more android users who learn to be as independent from the carriers as possible, the better its gona get for us all as android users

Exactly! Also I would like to add ya can keep the firmware and just swap the modem/radio that would give ya a new firmware with a good working stable modem so no more dropped calls or 4g data or whatever ya are experiencing

Just downgraded my non-rooted S3 to MB1. Never messed around with my phones before so I was a little scared of screwing something up. Couldn't have been any easier, thanks to everyone who mentioned it in this thread.

I'm not a big data user but the battery drain issue is a big problem for me. I'm a total klutz when it comes to trying to fix things, especially electronic things like my only cell phone. I would like to try and fix it because there's no telling how long it's going to take Verizon to come with a fix but I'm scared to death to try and go into my phone. I wish someone here locally knew how to do it because I would gladly pay them to try it.

This is fantastic! This Forum, this thread, has provided the answer for even unrooted phones! I agree it's not right to put people in this position, and it will be a stretch for some, too much for some and unknown to others, but this is just effing great! I'm so happy I found this place!
:thrasher:

Sorry, for some reason the last word in my original question got cut off... it was supposed to say "does this increae the number on the flash counter?" (I believe that's what it's called)

He means the flash counter that tells if the phone has been flashed (can cause problems with your warranty)
Tbh, im not sure. Wait until someone can say for sure but i think flashing official firmware doesnt affect the counter

Any idea if this prompts for an OTA or would lead to any problems with future OTAs? This is like installing an OTA, where it doesn't format any data, just overwrites?
