Root [ROM][ICS] Paranoid Android Ver1.6 Beta from source (31JUL2013)

Since installing prl 25014 I havent dropped to 1x

Just thought I would drop you a quick line, I don't know if you are aware of it or not but 25014 is a Sprint residential LTE full access 800SMR prl. As we have been discussing I don't know what running a LTE prl on a 3G only device will do.

I was unaware that the Triumph was unable to take advantage of the 800MHZ band. With that in mind, and not truly knowing how an LTE prl would affect a 3G only device I'm going to stick with 12126. It is a "Corporate" prl that has 3G roaming in Verizon (which of course VM can't do anyway - just incase I keep cdma roaming mode to home only and no data roaming on the outside chance I did connect by some miracle- not worth the risk) and has low priority 800SMR (which I now know the Triumph can't use anyway).

As far as the prl you use and the connection you get, opinions are all over the board on that. Some people feel that if you use a corporate prl you are given priority over a residential (normal) Sprint prl. These people quote that the residential Sprint prl (60xxx and 21xxx prls for non-LTE) gives Sprint customers priority over VM customers 61007, 61008 prl, therefore giving Sprint customers better reception and data connections to towers. I would assume that the full truth falls between what these people quote and people who feel that what prl you have doesn't matter at all. I'm just guessing that Sprint wouldn't make a different corporate prl for its own people for no reason. I'm also guessing that sprint wouldn't waste time, money and effort to push out prl updates to its contract customers if it didn't make a difference.

Well here's my two cents in on this debate and this is from PRL swipes I've done. The PRL does affect the 1x/3G reception.I had tried the 11115 PRL that was suppose to have Verzion roaming with it and it did affect my 1x/3G....it caused me to never see 3G anywhere I went. But I didn't get service where Verzion people get it and Virgin Mobile doesn't so it didn't improve service signal. Now when I changed to the 60xxx PRL I did connect to a different tower near my house and went from no bars to 1 to 2 bars. But when I did a signal check with the numbers it was just a placebo affect. So that said the PRL does affect it but in my case it never really helped.I think the issue is with VM.I agree that yes Sprint is doing PRL updates for a reason but the real question is "can VM phones ride off these updated PRL's" It can all be in the area that would make a difference but I wouldn't know.If there was a state by state list of which Sprint PRL's work best then we can see once and for all.

[SNIP] I'm also guessing that sprint wouldn't waste time, money and effort to push out prl updates to its contract customers if it didn't make a difference.

Oh, it definitely makes a difference... for roaming if you are on Sprint. We are stuck on Sprint's left-hind, VM.

Just for info, the following is by digiblur , who runs the Every Sprint PRL thread over at xda:

Common PRL Myths
1. A PRL is not a list of towers. It's a list of
cell phone systems that your phone searches
for.
2. It will not make your phone connect to
different Sprint 3G towers.
3. It will not give you better Sprint PCS band
3G or 1X coverage.
4. It will not give you better LTE coverage.
5. An update is not required for new cellular
sites.
6. The only time a PRL update will give you
better native Sprint coverage is when
800mhz SMR (BC10) support is added and
enabled in your area.
7. You can not use AT&T or VZW LTE with a
use of a different PRL

I will quote an edited-for-length version in my sig for awhile, with a link to that thread, which contains many useful links explaining PRL in detail, in case anyone is curious.

I was getting 1x daily until changing PRL..... Very odd

I was getting 1x daily until changing PRL..... Very odd

I've read the articles at XDA Developers, and have even posted a few times there. I have been running prl 16013, a corporate LTE full 800SMR prl. I have not had any complications with my phone, and getting great cell reception, even way out in my pasture fields, and haven't lost 3G data connection. On stock prl and a few other prls I tried I wouldn't get phone reception in my fields, and would constantly be kicked to 1X when not in town.

According to the "experts" at your local Sprint store prl updates will help you connect to new towers and can improve your data and cell reception. According to the articles and posters at XDA Developers prl updates don't matter, however each and every one of them have updated their prl. If it doesn't matter why did they bother to update, and why keep a page with dozens of new prls at all?

I personally like XDA Developers as a resource because they have most of the updated Sprint prls listed for download to try out. I don't know why updating the prl helped my phone, as well as craig71200, however flashing prl is quick and easy and just may help your phone in a low coverage area. If you live in a metro area, chances are you are already getting great data and phone reception (I know when I went to Pittsburgh PA I got insane 3G data speeds around 1.3-3.0 Mb/S when I was there a year ago on stock prl). Maybe that is the whole key to prls, if you live in a metro area or close to a metro area you are already getting the best you can get. If you live out in the sticks where they have recently updated towers or installed new ones an updated prl may help you. At any rate, considering it takes about 30 seconds to update the prl, if you aren't getting reception and constantly kicked to 1X updating the prl is worth a shot.

I agree the PRL's do make changes but I think what has always been the issue is if a VM phone can take advange of the PRL change. In your case it seems it has.But the thing about PRL's is that what may work for one phone/person may not work for someone else.

I am not trying to break up the debate on frequency exchange rate but this ROM has issues with my Triumph. I have flashed every one this forum except for the Froyo models to my phone and they all have their downfalls. I love this ones style except the lag and movement was far from fluid even after checking governors and DPI settings. There was a constant loss of service (with and w/o wifi activated), there was a constant flickering of backlight during all calls at two second intervals (with a bluetooth headset too if you are wondering how I counted), I had numerous call drops due to what appears to be a malfunctioning mic (I have never had that issue with other ROMs), very bad delay which causes numerous applications to open at the same time which forces the phone and apps to go non-responsive. Google NOW worked like charm for what I needed it to do, I had to manually move some files around because the provided link did nothing but provide an interface that did nothing based on the CPU and respective options. There was no significant battery usage reduction or gain that I noticed unless I was connected to Wifi...this killed it like it was constantly searching for a connection even though I was connected. This did not happen on some of the other ROMS I flashed and kept it running when I was connected.

I am not trying to be a downer but the Triumph has its limitations based strictly on the hardware and no code can fix that unless you make it light weight.

As for the LTE versus PRL goes...You need to know about data transfer rates which is an individual conundrum. You cannot really compare dragon fruit to dragon fruit unless you are in the same area at the same time.

I am going back to http://androidforums.com/triumph-al...tarship-triumph-v1-0-liftoff-6-24-2012-a.html for now because that is a solid ROM until I upgrade. ;)

Good job to the devs though for keeping up on an archaic issue though!

Same here. I installed Holo Launcher HD, free version, several days ago (after seeing your post), and haven't had jumbled text since.
Darn. I finally got messed up text today while still running Halo HD. I remember after first installing this ROM, it took many days before the fonts started messing up, so maybe something builds up (runs out of resources?) over time, and the fonts start to mess up.

I haven't been getting the jumbled text issue much but lately its been having a hard time sending/receiving texts. Sometimes I have to toggle airplane mode but most of the time it takes a reboot. Anyone else have this?

Yeah, if you look around you will see this in a number of threads. It seems that Sprint's upgrades are to blame. Basicaly it's new towers. I could be wrong though.

That makes sense now I tried multiple roms without luck I was beginning to think something was wrong with my phone

A couple weeks back I posted that I was very happy with this ROM. Well... For now I have reverted back to CM7. Everything seemed great at first until I started having more and more connection problems. My 3G would drop down to 1x or Roaming, or sometimes lose all connection and be stuck "Searching For Service" until either switching Airplane Mode on and off or, if that failed, a complete reboot.

But now that I see all the posts about the SMS/MMS difficulties and the PRL debate, I have to wonder if this was the cause of my problems. I stand by my position: I REALLY like this ROM. I hate to bash it or give it a bad name for my data issues if it's really because of Sprint.

Any thoughts?

I don't know where you live, but in NW Pennsylvania Sprint is doing extensive upgrades to existing towers and installing new towers all in an effort to bring 4G LTE to the area. Some areas have 4G LTE, most are still stuck with 3G. Sprint's plan is apparently to be done with the upgrades by the end of the year/Q1 of 2014.

As they are doing to the upgrades 3G service, texting, and basic cell reception is buggy as hell. It is also noteworthy that as they install new towers and upgrade the existing ones they are pushing out prl updates to their contract customers. Being that we are VM customers we are basically going to be left in the cold for the new updates and expected to either upgrade to newer phones or get a contract:mad:

I would recommend that you retry CM9, keeping in mind the updates that are taking place, and try to update your prl. Not all prls work well in all areas so you will have to try a bunch of them till you find one that works best for you. I would recommend 31103 as a good place to start. It is a Virgin Mobile/Boost Mobile prl that is being used on their newer phones such as the Samsung Galaxy Victory 4G LTE. There are some Sprint prls that may work better, however 31103 seems to work well with VM phones in most areas.

Added note on updating prl with this mod: if you use QPST during the boot cycle the prl will update, however it will not be displayed in system>about phone>status as is normal. No matter what prl you are actually running this version of the rom will always display your prl as 61007. The only way I know of to confirm your prl updated is to reflash CM7 or stock rom and check in status, then reflash CM9. May be best to reflash stock rom, update prl, confirm prl update, reflash CM9.

+1 I went to my local Sprint store a week or so ago and the rep there actually confirmed that Sprint is aware of the text messaging problems as well as data and cell reception/dropped call problems plaguing the area and it is all due to the upgrades and new towers Sprint is installing.

ok, sorry to the DEV but i had enough with this ROM. i've tried everything and the LAG gets worse and wose everyday. the home screen was so unresponsive that I couldn't push anything. that was ONLY the Home screen. Apps responded fine. jumbled text was a big issue also. But the biggest issue i've had was the charging problem. i would wake up with the phone saying charging and it die as soon as I took it off. I've then switched back to Miui and so far, will not switch back unless a new one comes out with those issues fixed. I love the layout and the features, the performance wasn't there.

Thanks for the info, cowboy. FWIW, I'm not gonna bother messing with my PRL right now. It sounds a little more complicated than I currently have the ambition for :P I switched back to MTDEV CM7 for the meantime and I'm gonna give it a few days to see if I still have the radio issues I did with Paranoid. I really do hope it's a problem with Sprint and not with Paranoid, because I do like the ROM and I'd hate to pass it up for something like this.

for some reason when i use tango i cant hear that person and she cant hear me as well, other than that the video quality is great, is there a setting im suppose to mess with so i could fix this? or is it a bug?? also skype dont work for video calls dont work, and when playing facebook games such as candy crush the game closes randomly..

I agree still buggy ... I'm on CM9 and really impressed its almost flawless

Skype worked fine for me with video calls on the May 6th version. When the phone got too hot tho the Wi-Fi would disconnect and log me out of Skype.

So your saying that my phone will get hot as well?? Or because you have a bad phone?? Also any tip on why certain games randomly close? ?
Any other latest rom you recommend with working features?

It's the phone itself. There's very poor sodder connections which when the phone gets hot from heavy use the sodder loosens from the connections which causes the Wi-Fi to disconnect.Any phone that you get will overheat if you are using alot of apps or apps that require lots of data. And if you are using games lot on the phone you need to use the gaming kernel that BSydz has somewhere on here.As for a ROM to use what do you need exactly to be working?

What's up guys? Long time no see. I've been really busy, remodeling my back porch, working, and just got Battlefield 3 for 5 bucks :D. Also, my power supply burned up on my main rig, literally blew up a capacitor, scared the heck out of me, and I didn't have a powerful enough one sitting around to run it. I did just order one though, good power supplies are expensive now. So, I'll try to get a new release out in the next few weeks. Just waiting on the psu to arrive.

Now, for all the people that are having issues ...
Sorry to say it, but you should do some research in to the history of ICS on our phone. We had very good devs working for over a year trying to get the camera to work at all. I have no coding experience, except what I have done with this phone, so before you ask for things to be fixed, instead of just reporting bugs, do a google search about your issue, and see if you can find some useful info about it. That is what I have to do every time, and it burns up a lot of the time I have, to actually fix this stuff. Plus I am in the same boat as you, when you ask for it to be fixed, you are already ahead of me in finding a solution, cause you know when and how the issue happens, better than anybody else. I'm just a guy who wanted to make his phone better and think I have done a decent job with that. Almost any ROM that you use for the Triumph now, has my fingerprints on it, which makes me feel good to have been able to contribute. But I'm still flying by the seat of my pants here, so be patient.

Thanks for all the support and feedback everybody. I don't plan on moving on from my 25 a month plan anytime soon, so as long as I own a Triumph, I have 2, I'll be here chipping away at it.

If anybody is interested in helping out, I have put most of my source code out, and am open to help out as much as I can. This has been a difficult journey by myself, any help is appreciated.

@BSydz

Hey you're doing a great job. We all appreciate your work. You're a trooper and we respect you for that. CM10.1 released a stable build today, just some news!
