Help Terrible battery life, firmware issue?

so what do we do?should i just cut some holes on the side of the case for camera button (dont know about volume buttons) or just wait till someone creates an app that would keep phone sleeping when the screen is off no matter what buttons you press apart from unlock button.
or just wait for firmware and maybe Samsung will fix it?
actually im quite happy with the battery now, way better (from 12hours to 2days and a bit) then when i was keeping it in the case. but ofcourse would like this phone to last a little bit better under heavy usage (or maybe i just want too much,lol)
 
Guess you could try snip a hole where the button is. Only seem to be the camera, its sensitive considering if you turn the camera on and put the phone in your case the LED flash will flash.

Just an update, went to bed with 75% battery woke up with 76%.......no case. Before it wouldnt event last the night. Yay! :)
 
well, the volume buttons need to be active for the audio player when its in your pocket and you need to turn it down as there isnt one for the remote however the buttons take a little more force to press them
its the flipping 2 stage camera button, they should have had it recessed more with only a tiny bit sticking out and it would have been fine but they chose the option of ultimate protrusion
 
I bet you can disable the wakup interupt for the button in the gpio config of the kernel. i'll have a look

hmmmmm, I'd say the volume buttons (when the display is locked) are only active IF the audio player is, well, active. As far as I know the only buttons that make the display turn-on are the lock/unlock button and the power-on button

i'm thinking they left it sticking out of the phone by as much as it does so that it'd be the more likely accidental press than the unlock key, so as to minimize the risk of unlocking the phone in your pocket

it doesnt need to turn the display on, the camera button doesnt turn the display on, it does however drain the battery rapid
 
Well I am totally shocked. I was almost ready to return this phone for the poor battery life and I am using the I4 firmware. I would charge it before bed and leave it "asleep" with everything killed using taskiller and it would be almost dead in the morning.

So glad I have read the last few pages of this thread now. Went to bed last night and left the phone out of the case, battery level 98% when i went to bed, 98% in the morning!!! Fantastic. What a huge design flaw this camera button is!! Especially as its the case that comes with the device that causes it. Now 15 hours later and battery level is still above 90% after a bit of browsing and playing a game. Awesome, so happy.

im happy you didnt return the phone coz i was thinking the same untill one day i went to work and decided to leave it out of the case and see what it does and surprisingly instead of lasting about 12hours in the case it managed to get to 2days and a half with a bit of everything (3g browsing, messaging, youtube, gps for about 100miles, and calls for about 50mins). so now im just waiting for any news about the camera button how can it be fixed that it wouldnt drain battery and wouldnt keep phone awake.
i guess we found the biggest battery drainner :) just need to fix it now

I know i'm sounding a lot like a broken record, but has anyone made a support call about this? Try to convince them to give you a case number and we might have luck in getting it fixed.
 
Ok, i did a bit of testing and it doesnt matter which key is pressed... even softkeys prevent the phone from falling asleep. seems to be an android problem, not a samsung...
 
yeah we gathered this, however the other softkeys are not pressed down by the case as they are more firm
the camera button is not and only needs a little pressure to activate stage one which in turn keeps the phone awake.
 
The pressing of a button should trigger an interupt. The phone should wake up to service that interupt. Then if nothing happened, or nothing needs to be done it should sleep again. Then if you released the button or pressed another one, the process would repeat.

For some reason the code that services the interupt doesnt quit and let the phone sleep untill the button is released. I guess you could say its an android bug, but its more likely a samsung one - how their drivers interact with the kernal.
 
Hm, strange issue, it has been 2 days since I last charged and the battery is at 71%. Not that I'm complaining, usually it lasted ~36 hours, but I have no idea what the hell happened. I think that all I did was clean the SIM card, but don't hold me on that
 
I had a good look at the case at the weekend. It seems that the camera button is being held down not by the case itself exactly, but by the seam that runs down the inside.

So I figured, it might be worth seeing if I can do anything about that. I've just taken a knife to mine after turning it inside out, and trimmed away a little of the case, trying not to nick the stitching that holds the two halves togther. I've uploaded a pic here: http://www.cougar.org.uk

There's a definite difference in feel if I press the button through the case edge now; before, I could only feel a single 'click,' now I can feel the double click of the two-position button.

On the downside, I now have a small split in the case where I've trimmed it, but I expected that to happen before I started (I'm cutting away the bit that holds it together after all). In hindsight though, you could probably get away with trimming less than I did and have the same effect. I wasn't overly careful because the case is pants anyway and figured it was no great loss if I destroyed it in the process.

It'll be interesting to see what effect this has on battery life now. I should've measured it before I started really... (-:
 
i was thinking of doing something similar but more balls out and cut a hole right through so it couldnt be pressed at all by the case
 
Yeah, point is you might be able to do it without hacking the case totally to pieces. Maybe.
 
I just had a quick look at it just now, and I hadnt noticed this before but when you put the case on you can actually hear the camera button click! LOL i hadnt realised it was actually 100% that the button gets held every time. Where's the scisors.

60 hours... and I'm at ~50%. Now I really wanna know what happened :|

In 2 hours when I had the phone in my pants, it drained 15 freaking %. It is definitly something to do with the button holding. It also froze during those 2 hours so I except the random "shutdown" problem is also caused by the key-presses whilst in "sleep".

what you mean warps KAM? you got a pic cos i was about to do some surgery on mine before you said this

EDIT oh sh.. i know what you mean, it cuts through the stiching so the leather seperates
 
yup... I turned it inside out, then put some tape to hold that bit together. It works, but the tape comes off eventually when it gets hot

im glad you were the beta tester for that method and not me :o

i think im going to turn it inside out and superglue and staple either side of that area then leave it to go solid overnight. then cut with a razor lol.
sounds like overkill but the case is really good at keeping off the pocket fluff and dust you get on non cased phones
 
Well I was going to use superglue too, but havnt had a chance yet...

If you turn it inside out, then cut just upto the seam (as i did), then the two sides of the case are still long enough to touch. So then put some tape on outside and turn it inside out again. The tape should hold the two sides together. Put a tiny drop of super glue there and spread it so it glues top to bottom. You might want to put some tape over it too, and leave overnight.

Then remove the inside tape, and clean with a stanely knife if necesary. Turn it the right way round again, and finally remove the outside tape. I think that should do it.
