Help Terrible battery life, firmware issue?

To be honest, you might not even need to do that it you're careful to stay on the outside of the stitching. I think it needs a little shaving, rather than having a 'koff great hole cutting in it.

If you look at my photo, I only took about 2mm off it, and in hindsight that was probably too much. My case has a little split in it, but you'd only notice if you went looking for it.

I just had a quick look at it just now, and I hadnt noticed this before but when you put the case on you can actually hear the camera button click! LOL i hadnt realised it was actually 100% that the button gets held every time.
oh my...you are right!! :eek::eek::eek:

Hi Everyone,

I read the most of the replies in this thread. The issue about poor battery life on Samsung i7500 seems to be related with device's sleep mode problems. According to the posts here, I made a test: I fully charged the phone, killed unnecessary applications and left the phone without its cover. When I woke up in he morning, I saw that the battery level was around 70% !!! I'm pretty sure that there was no key-press during night period. It was laying on my table as it is. So what can be the reason of this huge battery drain

Is there any application that will force the phone to go into sleep mode?

I like this phone except its very poor battery

strange...battery level should be around 95% or something like that, but 70%? Which are you phone's settings? Background data? Autosync?

So what can be the reason of this huge battery drain

I remember some time ago some clever soul mentioned how quickly the phone drained when travelling and in poor reception areas - something about renegotiation.

Now I live in a poor reception area and my phone's battery life is abysmal. It actually drank 50% and powered off overnight. I have yet to have it last a day.

Also the racket it creates as interference on my radios and speakers is amazing. I have never had a phone that has bleated so long, loud or frequently.

I actually am becoming paranoid about taking it out of the house without a full charge. :(

Background data was disabled, and Autosync is disabled too :(

My TasKiller shows a process named "wssyncmlnps". Should I also kill it or leave it? What does it stand for?

And I also run "Battery Widget" and "NetCounter" all the time. But I don't think that they are the problem... Or are they?

From the filename, I'd guess it's the phone-side part of New PC Studio's data sync. Given how well that works, ie, not at all over here, I can't see an issue with killing it.

There's one way to find out.

Kill it, I always do, it shows up yellow all the time in taskiller after a reboot meaning its using up processing cycles (and therefore battery) and it doesn't make a difference once its gone.

I've just managed 46 hours battey life including about 2 hours 3g browsing, 40mins calls, several texts (inc mms), 1 hour music playback through headphones so I'm reasonably chuffed with that :D escpecially since I spend an hour and a half on the train each day which saps the battery as it constantly tries to find a phone signal.

My tips are:
1. Keep it out of the case
2. Install I5 - but make sure you do a factory reset after (and a reboot)
3. Use taskiller to identify widgets/apps which don't run gracefully (wake the phone occassionally they will show as yellow in taskiller)

I'm hoping the next firmware update will disable all the buttons (except the power and screen lock ones)when the phone is sleeping, and android 1.6 will improve how it manages apps during sleep mode!

I upgraded to I5 firmware 8-9 days ago. I don't remember whether I made a factory reset or not. Does it really matter if I made it or not? And does a factory reset wipe out the data in my built-in sdcard?

I've done three firmware flashes now h7,h8 and i5 and after each time I didn't do a factory reset and my phone worked ok, but then I did a factory reset and the phone worked even better.

With I5, the firmware flash actually made everything slower and there was no improvement in battery life, but then after a factory reset and a reboot its like a different phone :D.

The factory reset will erase all of your settings/contacts, sms/mms and apps. It had no effect on anything stored on the internal SD like photos, music etc.

Thanks mate, I'll make a factory reset this evening.

ws syncML NPS, as cougar said, is the phone-side part of the NPS data sync service. I wouldn't kill it. I've got mine put as "ignore" on the task killer, so I never kill it, and i don't have those battery issues.
I'd say the problem is the "Battery Widget", I remember someone complaining about the widget draining the battery, ironically.

I've used "battery status" ever since I bought the phone. It just simply shows the precentage in upper left corner, nothing more, nothing less.
Cyrket - Battery Status

I have killed wssyncmlnps every time i've seen it.

Thanks for the image cougar! I used my galaxy as a surgical light while cutting :D When i put my galaxy in to the case now, I can hear as it clicks in at first, and then at the bottom it clicks back. And the case doesnt warp at all. So I guess it was a success!

Though... I started off cutting the wrong side at first...

I guess it won't make much difference if you kill it, but I asure you it doesn't drain the battery.
There are two reasons to kill it:
  1. Taskiller and similar apps don't mind which kind of apps are running, they kill everything (that's why ignore lists exist)
  2. We are a bit paranoid (no offence intended, I include myself) on the battery life, and we are trying to mantain the ram and the processor as 'clean' as possible everytime.

Yesterday, I repeated my battery life experiment. The changes that I made before the experiment was:

- I performed a clean factory reset.
- I installed the applications that I need in my phone.
- Before making the phone sleep, I killed every application including "Battery Widget" and "NetCounter". (I was keeping them running in my previous experiment)

This morning, I saw the battery level at %98 !!!

For the sake of a more scientific experiment, I should have killed only one application at a time to figure out the battery drainer guy, but I was very curious whether my battery was defected or not. So I killed both of the applications.

Those are the results I got.

:D a 2% drop overnight makes perfect sense looking at the battery specs.

Looking forward for your experiments' results

My phone is still up and running :) I'll conduct another experiment when it runs out of battery ;)

But I'm pretty sure that the battery issues are directly related with phone sleep time. Battery is discharged very quickly if something (such as the phone case or some applications) prevents phone from going to sleep. And never forget that your phone may not be in sleep mode although you press the sleep button. So, be aware of the applications which are running in the background.

Hey, I've been reading these forums quite abit and just registered so I could share my experiences.
Followed the tips above and seeing huge improvement.

Updated to II5 with the NPS a week ago, but did the factory reset(actually 2 times..) yesterday.
Full battery lasted roughly a day before, after II5 without reset the same.
Factory reset + installing all previous software gave me a big supprise. 6 hours, so I charged it a little and did another reset.
This time around, I forced the phone to die out on me with running all possible things at once, charged it to full, booted and "killed" it again with heavy use.
Oddly the heavy use lasted little over 2 hours. Then again charged to full over night and booted when I got to work so it can be out of the case on the table.

Just started installing programs that I need, one by one.
Before I used to do a full wipe with TasKiller but now I have left the system ones and the white ones be and only left the battery status from yellow tasks running.

Uptime is now 5hours and battery at 96% :D EDGE has been on the whole time, with minor usage by the Market app.

Sorry about the wall of text and thank you all for testing and sharing.

ps. Andoman, you're 100% right about the sleeptime killing battery. But how you force the sleep mode?

I do not know how to force the sleep mode, I just kill the applications which are preventing phone from sleeping. When installing applications, you can see a list of permissions that the application will require in order to run. If you see an entry like "System tools - prevent phone from sleeping" then, install and use that application with extreme caution :D

That's all I know so far. (By the way, I'm talking about software issues, besides those there is also another obvious reason which prevents phone from sleeping: the original phone case!)

you're right, but some of them are for the pretty obvious, like a music or video player preventing the phone to sleep, the strange case would be the opposite.
But hey, I guess you are talking about apps in general, just that this came to my mind.
I once installed "A Online Radio", and the app was all the time initializing on the background and using cpu resources, even when I didn't make any call to the app...just because I got connected to WiFi or some APN...I don't know exactly why. Finally I decided to unistall it.

From SpareParts -> End button behavior -> set it to sleep, not home then sleep. The latter doesn't work for some reason, goes home but no sleep. That or I am gettin paranoid

Small update: 53h uptime and battery at 55% with light use/few hours of browsing.

Hi everyone,

I have read the entire topic however I noticed a problem with my device. I am on II5 and GalaxHero ROM. I have spare parts installed, however no matter what i do i get about "30%" on "Running" and the battery has pretty much poor life, 1.5days - 2 max, only 3g is on (data disabled though), background data off, wi-fi off, bt off etc. I am using task killer app and the only thing i see ever popping there now is "internal memory widget" which is in gray color and can't be removed anyway. I am not using the pouch at all, I am carrying the phone in my pocket but with enough space, leaving it on the desk makes no difference. I tried the method someone described with plugging it then pressing lock button so it goes asleep and then activating again after ~5-10 secs, it doesn't seem to go to sleep right away or at all.

If anyone can help it would be very appreciated. I am specially interested for the thoughts of ppl also using II5 and GalaxHero ROM. For example, some current data, it is for about 2 hours period

45% battery
Running (29.7%)- 36 minutes, 37 seconds
Screen on (11.8%) - 14 minutes, 33 seconds
CPU usage - User time 2 minutes, 41 seconds
System time 12 seconds
Total time 2 minutes, 53 seconds
Partial wake: 3 minutes, 59 seconds.

I will leave it overnight fully charged and edit the topic in the morning for some more accurate data
