Root [Virgin Mobile] [KERNEL] VaeVictus Kernel - Overclocked to 1.8Ghz [Updated 8-8-13]

BTW- I built this last night, and charged overnight on my PC with fastcharge enabled. No overheating or other issues, but I was asleep so I don't know if it actually charged any faster.

Bad Timing but Ima hafta take a little break from this...parents found a "stash" if you know what I mean... (I'm a high school student, working on a kernel, yeah I know...)
But ummm...Jerry "Shazam" is done. Play around with it. See if it actually works (It shouldn't but its worth a try).
Instructions are @ github at experimental/shazam.txt
just pull the latest commits ;)
Hopefully I can still make changes to the kernel on the sneak :P

hey Jerryscript are you considering any sound improvements in kernel like for instance Voodoo? Not that this phone doesnt already sound good. I plug mine in to soundbar all the time.

I know Im late for this...but Im working on this in the dark. It take me a while under my current circumstances :D

Good luck with the folks, and thanks for all the help, hope too see you in IRC soon!

New build is up, bug fixes to GPU control and FastCharge. This build gave me my best Antutu benchmark to date!

Let us know how it works out for you! ;)

FYI- There is a new updated kernel source available for SPH-L300_VMU (our Victory Virgin Mobile). I'm downloading now, will do a diff agains the previous release and see what's new.

BTW- This could mean a new firmware is in the works, but don't hold your breath! ;)

Introducing VaeVictus
Overclocked Kernel for
Virgin Mobile Galaxy Victory

This kernel is built from the official Samsung source for the Virgin Mobile Galaxy Victory, release MC1. It has been built with the Linaro toolchain for maximum efficiency. Thanks to rbheromax, it has the ability to overclock to 1.8ghz, automatically overclocks the GPU to 400mhz as needed, and has extra governors added to allow you to find the best settings for your personal needs!

Standard Warning: Placing unofficial software on your phone could damage it, and even brick it leaving it unusable for anything. I take no responsibility for what you do to your phone! This kernel is released as is, with the source available for those who want it, but with NO WARRANTY AT ALL!

Note- see second post for older versions

Update 8-5-13 : Fixed bugs in GPU overclock, now actually runs at 400mhz!
Please report any issues.

  1. Download VaeVictus-0.2.1.zip
  2. Place on your sdcard
  3. Boot into recovery
  4. Flash VaeVictus
  5. Reboot

To change the default overclock and governor settings, download an app from the Play Store such as No-frills CPU Control, Kernel Tuner, or Trickster Mod. There are many apps to choose from, but be warned that some may not work properly with our phones, so MAKE SURE YOU BACKUP FIRST!

Notes- The stock Samsung Victory Virgin Mobile kernel can be downloaded in the second post. Please post all questions about overclocking and governors in the testing thread. All other questions about VaeVictus will be answered here. ;)

Huge thanks to rbheromax
for all his help getting overclock frequencies
and governors performing properly!

Why did I misspell VaeVictus (VaeVictis)?
Call it the second error made in building this kernel.
The first error was of course me thinking I could build it in one night!
;)

should i get this if i already have 0.2.2-r1, is thsi a better update

This is just a kernel, not a rom like Victorious.

This kernel is already in the Victorious rom however Jerry did release a new version yesterday with fixes to GPU frequencies.

I'd go ahead and flash the newer build

Oh yea thts wht I ment, show I just put it on my sd card then boot into recovery and flash it, do I still wipe cache and dalvik before

so i was using kernel tuner root, and it said my device wasent supported with the gpu only adreno 225 and so on could use it, but i just upgrades to jerryscripts newest kernel, can i just ignore the message and still use it, also since the victory is a 1.2 dual core could i tune back the first cpu0 to a lower speed like for idleing, and use the cpu1 for a higher speed, or does it not work like that, just wondering

No need to wipe anything when flashing kernels. Just reboot recovery, flash, reboot system ;)

so i was wondering if i can have multiple kernel apps on my phone, im not using them at once but some display different info, i like kernel tuner and i also have no-frills, should i just use one or can i keep both, and my phone doesent seem to be charging like before, i have to plug it into the computer for it to charge, my cpu is only set to 1.5gHz conservative and its 384gHz the lowest, just curious on how i should go about this, other then that everything is working great with the new kernel thanks to jerryscript.

The settings in Kernel Tuner appear to have this fuctionality (to adjust each core freq individually), but in testing it doesn't seem to work for me. Even if I uncheck the link cores box, whatever I set cpu0 to is what cpu1 uses... although the governors seem to stick if I use different ones per core, for example I can put cpu0 ondemand, and cpu1 to perfomance, and only cpu1 stays maxed out. It's just too bad it wont use the frequencies I set for each core so I could test if one core is more stable at higher speeds than the other.

Also in reference to multiple kernel apps, I was using a couple, I have Rom toolbox pro which lets me set freq sched. and gov., as well as set profiles so if my screen is off I can make it clock down to max of 384mhz and when screen is on go back to max, or if battery is below 50% to use more conservative settings ect... and I also use Kernel Tuner for the added features of seeing both cores, and also changing govs on a per core basis. I did notice though, that after the latest Kernel Tuner updates, no other app I have or download can change the settings, it wont stick, but kernel tuner still works. I can't use any other apps to change settings now, Even if I uninstall it... I'm kind of annoyed by it.

I have recently switched to TricksterMOD to control the governors and frequency, as it's the only app I've found that can set the GPU overclock and governors appropriately (I'm sure there are other apps that will work, this is just my experience/recommedation).

You cannot set the frequency on all governors (though the max should stick). Some governors have a mind of their own, while others will take your orders no matter what. For example, Performance governor is always going to try to push the speed to it's max. Powersave is always going to try to push the speed to it's min.

Google Android kernel governors, and do a bit of reading about each one. It's really more than I can explain in a single post. ;)

Having multiple kernel apps installed at once can sometimes cause issues, it depends upon how they work. Do not use the option to set on boot on multiple kernel apps, or they will fight each other at boot time (could cause a bootloop). I would suggest you try one at a time, uninstalling each one before unstalling the next, until you find the one that works best for you.

ok so im only guna use kernel tuner and under rom toolbox i unchecked apply on boot, but on kernel tuner it say my device isent supported under the gpu settings, but my phone does have an adreno 225 i think, i looked it up under the info in kernel tuner, but i think ill just leave those alone, just in case, but everything is working so good, i love this stuff

ok so i got a question, whats the best governor to use etc. conservative, interactive, or one thats good to balance between power and battery, im using kernel tuner and i have both CPU'S set to conservative 1.5 max and 384 i think for the lowest, i read thru all the different lists of governor's but im curious to what other ppl use/ or think is the best for the galaxy victoryy

Jerry how did you get 13000???
I used TricksterMod (Play Store), set to Performance gov, min 1.5 max 1.8 cpu, and Performance gov, max 400 gpu, turned off MPDecision, and put my phone in airplane mode. I made sure the phone was cool, and I cleared out everything in the task manager (long press home button), and let the phone sit idle for over 5 minutes.

I consistently score over 13000 this way, best to date is 13475. However, I use the Conservative governor, min 810 max 1.5 cpu, and ondemand max 300 gpu, on a daily basis. Gives me smooth performance/battery life. ;)
