Root help using recovery

You should try the Mik rom that Mikey suggested. It's a great rom and would have made a much better stock rom than the original one :)

I'm a little late to the party but I thought I'd put my $0.02 in. I have MikG rom and the sprint hotspot don't work and I don't think it worked before I rooted either. It needs to be validated by sprint in order to work. I have seen other roms with a cracked version of the sprint hotspot app which works fine. For tethering I use http://android-wifi-tether.googlecode.com works like a charm. G'luck

Mikg had the hacked Wi-Fi baked in......you guys should not have issues......in one of the stickies at the top of this forum, there should be a link for wireless tethering for the og evo......in there, there is a link for the wireless tethering apk.

It's been awhile since I've used Mikg, but I didn't have a problem with the rom hotspot. I have had issues though from time to time with some of the JB roms.

With all due respect (and I do really respect you a lot and value your giving of your time to help me when I needed it) I beg to differ. As a current MikG user I can tell you that the hacked hotspot app is not baked in, only the original one. In your bookmarks thread you have a link to a thread here on AF that talks about tethering. It says 3 options to get wireless tethering.
1) pay $ to sprint to unlock the feature
2) install the wifi tether app that I linked to.
3) install a mod to unlock the sprint hotspot app. Some roms have this mod baked in but MikG does not.
So it's possible you remember it being baked in only because you installed that mod along with the rom.

Hmm well it has been years since I have been on this rom.......I could have sworn mik had it cooked in........I never really stayed on his roms as I love aosp roms like decks reloaded.

Well it could be I'm wrong but in my experience with three different phones with MikG the sprint hotspot app wouldn't work. But I will try to look around Miks forums to see if he has any info if it's actually cooked in or not.
On a side note I have already downloaded Decks Reloaded but didn't install it yet. Not sure what I'm waiting for though

Well when I'm wrong I'm wrong.
Found this in the change log
V1.0
Hotspot hack (usb dont work... but hotspot app does)
And later in the change log he says he fixed USB tethering.
However I think I may have an idea why it's not working for us. The original mod that is baked in is made by calkulin. On his page of mods it shows as a mod for the evo in Android 2.2 the current version is 2.3.5 and possibly is not compatible anymore with this mod.

As a side question how do I take advantage of the baked in USB tethering? I'd it's baked in I shouldn't need any other app, but how do I at least try it to see if it's working?

If you're trying to use the phone as a modem via usb I was always happy with a app called Klink. This is something I used before I rooted so I can't give you much help on the baked usb tether. Once rooted I've always used the hotspot.

Hold on hold I just tried the hotspot app and lo and behold it's working! Not perfectly yet as it says little or no connectivity but let me play around with it a little and I'll report back.

Alright here we go, I still could not get hotspot to work. It displays little or no connectivity on my pic . maybe it's still being blocked by sprint.
On a good note the native USB tethering option works.
