Official EVO Rumors and Speculation thread

This is a bit off-topic but since we've been talking about Google Voice, does GV allow you to transfer contacts to your phone, or is it still better to use gmail for that?

Correct stream alone on battery. Back light will always dim if nothing is happening unless you change the setting

Nice. Still better than I thought. Actually, that's what I meant. If you changed the settings so that it doesn't dim, would we be looking at maybe 1 hour of use or 1.5? Just trying to figure out if you could get through an entire movie with the screen fully lit and still have battery life left over.

Only problem for me is I work M-F and the premiere is on a Monday. Even though I work fairly close to the Mann theatres, it's still a 30 minute (minimum) side street drive through rush hour traffic...LOL.

Yeah, good luck getting there on a Monday evening through traffic. That reminds me, I have to drive home soon .

So that's maybe 1-2 movies going on battery alone? I'm assuming that's not doing any other phone functions except watching video playback.

And is that on full display brightness w/o the backlight dimming after a certain amount of time?

At that level of granularity, the amount of processing power that it takes to decode the format of what you're viewing comes into play. E.g.: playing a .mpg video encoded at a low bitstream / quality level with mono sound vs. playing a multichannel audio .mp4 file that's in HD and needs to be scaled down to fit on the EVO's screen. The latter would eat more power.

Using the ever-powerful internet car analogy: It's like asking how long you can drive a truck down a straight highway before you run out of gas. The more stuff you're hauling in the truck, the quicker your gas will go.

Anyhow - if the Evo can squeeze a rough 3-4 hours of media playback time before it dies, I can live with that. Getting a movie or two in is a good deal, especially given that it's being displayed on that awesomely large screen.

Edit: I wouldn't be surprised if playing through the HDMI port actually saves you battery as opposed to playing through the screen, since the processor will no longer have to work to downscale the image. Who knows.

2-3 hours

Those are the sort of results I was expecting, wouldn't do much good if you watched one movie and ended up with a 10% battery. I hope extended batteries fix this problem.

If you are screening a movie over HDMI out I say bring your charger :) I watched a movie on my TP the other day and my battery went from 80% to 20%. Snapdragon should play with less batt drain but it will still be significant.

No, I'm on the go alot really doubt I'd even buy an HDMI cable I want multimedia on the go. That's really why I'm worried about heavy battery use but I'm sure extended batteries will come out soon enough.

I know that, I just wondered if GV made it easier somehow or if the process was different, but I suppose I should have just checked myself, so nevermind.

Naw, GV stores everything in the cloud. It is just a webapp that you have to input phone numbers to.

Hop on a train, driving through Manhattan I did that for like a week when a started my job there. Never again!

I should have answered that better. Yes it does.. and you can categorize and assign ring types and the numbers base on the groups you set up..

Is there a way we can do daily recaps of this thread (of actual info and not just conversation)? It's 137 pages and as much as I try to stay up to date, five pages go by in betweens time I look in. please help bill!

Yea I almost fell for that made up video as a leaked commercial a while back before they started re-doing the Sprint website.
LOL Nate. That would be a cool commercial though. I am sure though that evo will do a LOT better (at least I hope) than the unincrediable phone. My hands are itching for the evo.

LOL...I would and wish they had reliable public transportation like that in LA, but unfortunately the train doesn't run by the part of LA I'm at, so my only options are bus or drive (which is the same thing). My work is literally around 6 miles from where the Premiere is going to be...but still at least a 30 minute drive through LA rush hour (more like 45, actually).

i know it depends on the length of the movie and maybe even the format, but if we assume this will come with 8gb of onboard memory, how many movies could that hold? 3? 10?

Oh my god. I step away for half a day and there are 20 pages to catch up on :D. I am still working on getting into the LA party, but I am not sure it is going to happen. I don't think they will be selling them there anyway, so I don't really care. I just want an EVO :D.
I know what you mean. Imagine going away for a week like I will be doing. hmmm maybe I should close the thread until I get back. :D

I kid, I kid, I will never do that.

TS out

I don't know anything about HDMI or Micro HDMI... is there any possibility that the EVO would be able to draw power from HDMI? Similar to how USB would?

No, but you should work on that and become rich. It will probably happen as that format/cable type grows more popular

Close the topic? Preposterous, we riot!!!

PS: j/k TS, I don't want a one way ticket to Banlandia I hear they're limited to AT&T 3G over there.

Meh, serves me right for not looking under your avatar. I thought you were in NY when I wrote that.

When you play a movie out through HDMI it is not shown on the Evo's screen, only on the TV's. However you still have the menu controls on the Evo. I'm not sure if that's a battery saving measure or what (I guess so).
