Mike, just curious as to how Chinese companies differ to Western companies? And do you have any idea on how an American can make money and do business with a Chinese company?

My understanding is that, in order to do business in China, foreign companies have to either enter a majority Chinese-controlled JV* with a Chinese company or have a majority Chinese-owned local holding company - either way, the Chinese operation is essentially majority Chinese owned. The foreign company then also has to sign over all IP rights used by the Chinese operation to the Chinese-owned JV/holding company.

And yes, that essentially means that in order to do business in China, you have to gift your business to the Chinese - wrapping and ribbons optional.

How any foreign company ever signed up for this is a total mystery to me: short termism is one thing, handing over your business lock, stock and barrel is insanity. No wonder China's well on it's way to becoming the dominant superpower and the west is well on it's way to economic irrelevance.

* JV = Joint Venture

Don't think always always have to JV with a Chinese company. Sure Apple and Microsoft(except for Skype) didn't and are doing business in China on their own. Same with Coca-Cola, KFC, etc. But one thing both Apple and Microsoft do is comply with all laws, including censoring and monitoring. AFAICT this is what Google didn't want to do. They'll run services that make them $$$$ though, specifically their ad products.

I'm a British expat living and working in China, 5 years now. Really because I can easily find the work and lifestyle that I like, rather than being unemployed and having little money in my own country. And I'm not the only one. I still visit the UK once a year for a vacation.

I believe that's right, but if you want to provide support services for your product, unless you can show a significant presence and get along with the officials, having a JV really helps.

Especially when you put up a Chinese website for your company and register your name there.

Claim jumpers and trolls insisting that you owe them money to continue using your name are far easier for a partner to deal with, and like in any country, especially throughout Asia, firms like to know that a significant portion of what they spend on support is going to a home team.

Making business sense in China isn't hard unless you expect them to think like Westerners.

As you know, relationships are very, very important.

My question is, are citizens of China more well off than people in the West?

Also I have heard of some people making money off of Alibaba (look it up lol)

Just curious because I'd maybe like to try to do business outside of the US if possible

More well off? No. Depends on how you define that but I wouldn't say so.

Huge market? Yes.

Alibaba I don't have to look up, we're constantly suppressing scammers referencing it for spam.

I know Alibaba, we used to regularly hold English corners at their HQ in Hangzhou. They're one of the largest internet businesses in China, if not the world now. Their main site is Alibaba which is a trade B2B listing directory, and is mainly for foreign companies looking to source products from China. Then there's Ali Express, which is people in China selling to individuals overseas. This is the where the scammers and spam comes from and the site is blocked by AF. There's also Taobao, which is basically a Chinese version of Ebay or Amazon, and is only in Chinese. If people are buying things online in China, it's nearly always Taobao they're using.

On the whole I'd say no. Main thing is wages are much lower than in the west and people will often be working much longer hours, especially in factories and offices. Thing is luxury items like Apple iPhones cost significantly more in China than they do in the US or UK. While on the other hand the basic costs of living are very much lower, buses are equivalent of 15 cents, taxis about $1 where I am, and going to the dentist costs much less, etc. There's a very significant and increasing middle class though that do have money to spend on luxuries, and they're not afraid to show it and brand whore either, like letting everyone know they can afford Armani, Burberry, Gucci, Cartier, Apple, etc. I live in Xilinhot, which is a small but quite affluent city, and is a nice place to settle down IMO, There's no pollution here and the sky is nearly always blue. But on the other hand there's many regions that can be horribly polluted or can be extremely poor.

Why do some teachers have to use such big words? Teacher walked by from my last semester. Met him, 1 class later I dropped his class cuz he made no sense.

Why do these girls laugh at the same joke 20 times.

Exactly. Most of the girls in my class giggle and get 5 or 6 conduct marks every day...

Remember ....... tomorrow is valentine's day. Don't break a heart, share yours with the people around you. Let's make it a very special by doing the following random act of kindness. Stop on the street in front of a homeless person and look them in the eyes and say.......YOU ARE LOVED. Then, without hesitation, hand them 5 yuan, dont just drop it on the ground or in a cup in front of them, place it directly into their hand, and then just walk away. They will be blessed and so will you. You will receive you special gift back 100 times by just helping this one person. After you do it ....... text me and let me know how it felt for you to do this kindness for another.
