Root New OTA update?!

I know that this is now in the root section, but does this mean that Verizon will be sending out another OTA? From what I read at DroidMod it sounds like they are going to be sending out the entire OS/image. Just making sure I read it correctly.
 
I guess I should chime in to clear some rumors. I'm running CM 5.0.6.2 with CwMR and have not been notified of OTA nor is my battery drain more than normal.

One thing I can tell you that drains battery is Battery Left widget. With that uninstalled I'm getting at least 3-5 hrs extra easily on the same charge. You don't need it with the percentage being displayed on top of the battery icon anyways (CM).
 
So, since this topic was moved to the All Things Root section, is Verizon scanning the network looking for rooted phones and then sending this update to those only? Can Verizon even tell if a phone is rooted without physically holding the phone in their hands? I ask because it seems that it would be a pain in the butt compared to just sending it to all Droids (root and non-root).

Also, has anyone been able to find info about this update? Does it fix any of the issues that have been expressed from the original 2.1 update?

"This is Vulcan1600Rider from DF. I was returning my Moto Droid on Wednesday because I'm getting a certified like new phone delivering to my house on Wednesday. I needed to unroot anyway, so I went to stock, did the mandatory 2.1 update and then installed this so called OTA update. I then went back to RSD Lite and was able to install the 2.0.1 .sbf file successfully. So, this has not blocked anything, and will still be able to root my replacement Droid on Wednesday. I just wanted to report my findings and confirm that this did not succeed in locking down our devices."

I have had no batt. issues today.
Only thing I noticed is that there was a new CW version to flash today, I did and it kept stalling, going to 50%, going back to 0% so I just rebooted. It seemed very odd and has never happened.

I am curious as to how you would know that SPR blocked the update. I have no problems flashing it, but can I just flash it right back or do I have to wait a day? You know what I am saying?

I am playing with CW right now so I can't look, but I think there is a setting in Battery left so you can tweak the update interval - that should suck less juice. I have had no issues with this widget.

without having any knowledge of this thread or that from Droid Life, i decided to perform a test on my battery usage.

From 8am yesterday to 12am tonight.. I found that my battery has never ever worked this great before.... this is odd because I am comparing it to all your experiences, and it doesnt match up.

I have SPRecovery and ClockWork Recovery installed and have not had any battery issues..maybe it has not rolled out to me yet (I reside in SoCal)

Ill keep you all posted for the following day (today)
 
Battery issues the past couple days since running BB 1.0. I think I'll just flash back to CM. I also just checked for system updates and it says yours is up to date. :confused:

That is what I have been asking. I have been looking for some more information on this but I have not been successful. I hope that someone will be able to answer this for us. I would love to know more on this update.
 
My understanding is that this update is the exact same as the last one. The only difference is instead of just 15mb or so update its the full OS and around 60mb. Not quite sure the point of it though.
 
So is this being sent to everyone or are they just sending it to rooted users? I am not sure how they would know if you are rooted or not, unless they can go by who has accepted the update and who hasn't. If this would help with some of the problems from the OTA 2.1 that would be great.
 
I think only people who are not running the official 2.1 are getting it. So anyone still on 2.0.1 would still get it too. But my understanding is its the same so it wont help any problems
 
Hmmm..... That just seems odd to me, not saying that is not what is happening, but why would Verizon want to target such a small, probably really small, group of Droid owners?
 
Well it's not that small of a user base really. Pete's ROM's alone have had over 150K unique downloads from my server. Not to mention all the people who bought and used SMupdater. So that's roughly 10% of Droid users.

I agree with you OMJ.
 
If I have SPRecovery, can I put the su and superuser.apk that I currently have right back on with no problems or is there any compatabilty issues with doing this?

if you have spr the OTA will not install. So no worry there
 
For those that are on a CM ROM here is my understanding about the OTA updates. The phone already thinks it is on the latest version of 2.1 (that is why you see 2.1 R1 in your about phone in settings). This means that the OTAs will not even try to download on your phone as it already thinks you have the latest version.
 
I rooted this weekend by first installing SPRecovery on my non-rooted stock 2.1 then installing a custom 2.1 ROM from there. I'm seeing no decrease in battery life compared to when I wasn't rooted. And I'm now running live wallpapers (I didn't prior to rooting because I felt it slowed down the phone too much). This is just pure speculation, but I'm wondering if this is only for users who rooted 2.0.1 and have since rejected the 2.1 update.

The custom roms we install are the only good things about this phone. If they are going to stop this, phone sales will ultimately suffer. If I could not rom I would by an Incredible.

first off it was a joke, but the user base that roots is less than 10% of droid owners for sure its honestly not going to make a big difference in droid sales if they stopped root.(but they wont) And really do you think Motorola cares if you go buy an Incredible? You already paid for the Droid they made their money off you.
