Does overclocking your droid to lets say 800mhz or 1000mhz overheat it? Or will it cause any damage to it?

Yes and no... I read many threads and all droids act different. I myself have it belkit1000. As with any overclocking you run the risk of overheating. I recommed going up in slow increments if anything! Take it slow!

I have yet to hear (or better said...read) about anyone burning up their processor. I've ran mine up to 1.2GHz and yes...it will get hot (I think 135 deg F is about the max I've seen). I currently run at 1.0 with Bugless Beast V1.0 (actually...I running the version that Fabulous made) and It runs pretty cool for me.
Just to put it into perspective, My phone running @ 550MHz runs about 115 deg F when using the navigation.

If you download SetCPU from the Market, there's a profile with a temperature failsafe. You set the max temperature you want and what speed the CPU drops to should it reach that temp. I'm running BuglessBeast v1.0 with the bekit 1ghz lv kernel...and I'm overclocked at 900mhz. Even with that, my temperature hasn't hit 122*...no matter what I do...which is where my failsafe is set to kick in.

This is what makes root, or in this case, overclocking that much more interesting. Doing any kind of 'hack' to your phone runs the risk of just bricking the item. The fact that you mod your phone allows you, the user, that much more responsibility and control over what your phone can do or how it can perform. Through stock settings, your running the phone with just that less of a risk of doing any internal damage... having had said that;
Overheating does occur, this is when your responsibility and control over your phone kicks in- you need to be able to use it properly because only you can tell what is good or bad for it. Using it excessively and just being careless with the performance you put it through, causes you to run a higher risk of any internal or, if any, physical damage to it.
This is why disclaimers are placed at the end or beginning of the guides in this forum, not just only to protect the authors but to remind you that you have now access full control over how your phone runs.

I think what is said above is true but if you only overclock to 800 and put in a couple of fail-safes (that's where mine is) I think the risk of damage from overclocking is just about nil. I had mine at 1000 before but really 800 is plenty fast for me.

Couldn't agree more with this post. I was running a 1Ghz kernel before, but I've been using the 800Mhz since yesterday and I'm much more pleased with the speed and heat.. and I concur that it's quite fast.
In fact, I was at a Verizon store yesterday and made the sales rep do a double take when my Droid was outpacing his Incredible just from simple usage (swiping, browsing, etc.)

I am at 1gHz and I have et to have any issues. It is blazing fast and doesnt get too hot. If you are really worried about heat, just put it back forn to 550 mhz when playing a game or using navigation.

i did that for a couple people back in the WinMobile days. problem is most people cant live with out their phone for to long.

I wouldnt suggest you have someone else do any rooting for you. Its much better to learn to do it on your own so you can handle any problems that may result down the road. If you mail your phone to someone then a week later find yourself in a boot loop not only will you not know what to do but you wont know what to tell others about what has been done to your phone. That makes it real hard for people to help you solve problems.
Better to learn how to do it cause its free and you can keep yourself updated and problem free

Yep what OMJ said... I remember a while back someone posting (I think it was this forum but not sure) questions and no one could help him because he kept saying "the people that rooted it for me and then installed some ROM" so he couldn't tell anyone how it was rooted or even what ROM he was running...

Agreed and isn't part of the fun being able to switch ROMs? If you couldn't do this on your own, that negates a big part of it.

Being a rooted newbie (only rooted for the past 6 day), I'm so glad I did it on my own. I did once consider seeing if someone around me might be able to do it for me. But doing it on my own taught me a lot about my phone. I learned more in the past 6 days about how it works than I did in the previous four months that I owned it.
In regards to the topic, I'm running BB V1.0 as well (specifically, the NexBeast version that Fab made). I have the 7-slot 1Ghz kernel installed. I have it set to overclock at 900Mhz and I love it. Sure, it gets hot, but not too hot. Just for comparison's sake I ran the phone for two hours (browsing, games, Facebook, etc. while also listening to Pandora) but I purposely dialed SetCPU down so that all levels were at stock (550Mhz). The temp got up to 125F. I figured if that's the stock setting, as long as I ensure I never go above that temp I should be fine. I have yet to reach that temp while overclocking.

I have my Droid OC'd to 1Ghz but it does get warm. Now that its warming up outside, I'm not sure the heat combined with sun in the car dock are going to go together very well. I installed BB 1.0 from Rom Manager using the 1Ghz lv profile...can I just back it down to 800Mhz with SetCPU or do I need to reflash with BB 1.0 and the 800Mhz profile?

stephejo.......In ROM manager, did you run Flash ClockworkMod Recovery first? I think you have to do this before it will work.

I'm unclear here too - If I put a 800mhz kernel on my phone do I need SETCPU to bump me over stock (or I guess 'activate' this kernel) or does the kernel simply run at 800mhz?
How does setcpu work hand and hand w/ custom kernels? Does SETCPU work w/ a unmodified kernel?
