My work truck is a 2500 HD, passes everything but a gas station. So I bought a commuter car several years back (2001 Ford Focus Hatchback) which all I've ever done is change the oil and replace a transmission mount that took me 45 minutes and 30 bucks. So at 160k miles...I think Ford motor is OK lol.
 
My dad owns a 92 F-350 with about 200k on it now. It's had maybe a couple of alternators replaced and a starter or two? It's been super reliable. I'd drive it across the country today if it had air conditioning. I even managed to get 16 mpg doing 85 for about 300 miles last year. That's pretty good for a heavy old truck that isn't a diesel.
 
I personally want a new Tacoma. Just the base 4x4 double cab will do. They have high reliability and resale value. All I'd want is have the ability to tow a 3000lbs-ish trailer for camping. It's rated at 6500lbs so no problem.
 
My 2500 is a diesel and its got 188k still running like a champ. I'd never own a HD work truck that was gasoline. My buddy has an F250 and with his trailer he's lucky to get 10-12 mpg.
 
I guess I should have been clearer in my definition of trailer.

I'm usually thinking of 5-15,000 lb trailers. What you would need a truck for.
