Sorry. I just confirmed that Google Play services appears to still be able to update itself even if you disable its updating function on a rooted Hydro Vibe.

Sorry. I just confirmed that Google Play services appears to still be able to update itself even if you disable its updating function on a rooted Hydro Vibe.

I've been able to stop Play Services from updating by disabling updates with 7.8.xx set as system version on a rooted phone. Have rebooted several times in the past two weeks with this configuration and have not seen a update.

Only a matter of time before 7.8 will be obsolete, but at least the phone is functional for time being if you are willing to root. On a side note I would not rely on maps, not stable at all with current state of affairs. Luckily had "Here" maps installed and saved my rear.

I see virgin mobile is now selling Moto G 3 gen and HTC desire 626s, if forced to abandon the Vibe which phone would be the better choice?

Only you can decide that. but if it were me. The Moto G would be my pick. I seen plenty of HTC Phone's Digitizers fail to say no to buying any HTCs for the rest of my days. About every phone brought to me to me to repair that just had one that failed (wasn't broken from any falls or anything. no cracks) 80% of the time it was a HTC phone or iPhone the other 20% was any phone owned by a moron that never got a case and cracked there phones. lol

But I have the Moto E 2nd Gen. and even know there some features removed it being a cheap entry grade. I am enjoying it. And A friend has the Moto G and he love its. Plus the Moto G Has slightly better specs than the HTC desire.

Thanks, I a also like that its waterproof. The moto will probably be my next purchase if Kyocera fails to deliver

Well i didn't change because of these issues I had got the moto e before it started having issues finally as well. But i can make mine work just fine with little screwing around on. I went into the recovery mode and cleared everything (i didn't use the built in erase option within Android).

Once up and running, I upgraded everything. Then one of a time as issue came up with that certain app i was using i would downgrade it to a older version and disabled auto update for it (but i kept google play and google services updated as by themselves they don't mess up on my phone). I have only had to do this with like 3-4 Google apps. the rest of them run fine with latest updates.

Allot of what i've noticed is the latest update to some of the google apps themself. not so much google play services. is corrupting the cache data. Take Hangout for example. I can run it fully updated without an issue until i close it, or something else closes it or restart the phone. Then when i start it it crashes. Until i go into the app manager and clear the data. then it starts up and runs fine again for the phone time, until the next clear data. But downgrade hangout to a older version before the issues and disabling the auto update the issue goes away all together. I just do that to all google apps effected and keep google play and google services updated to latest.

I too noticed this as well.
If you let it run in the background, and services updates, everything runs smoothly until you force close the app.

Nothing yet, I have already purchased Moto 3G, and if they fix before then ill give that phone to my daughter and keep my vibe, hate to give it up but cant wait forever

It really ticks me off that for once there is an affordable handset with NFC, dust and h20 proof, wireless charging and Google/Kyocera kills it. I'll hold out as long as possible because I really do like this phone, solidly built, rugged, and not a stupid phablet, personally speaking I do not want an ipad mini sized phone

I think if i really took the time to work on it. I could maybe fix the issues without Google or Keyocera's help. but that would mean everyone would need to root to apply the fix (chancing not being able to use any official OTA updates if they do put one out), Gut all google services and apps, transplanting any missing files from a working headset (of the same Android Version), and installing google services not original to the phone, change some configs to make the phone not look like the vibe, but look like the Hydro Icon (far as i know but haven't checked if those phones are effected or not) as its a close siblings in specs and hardware (using tricks that would be used to trick google play store to think a phone is compatibility for software when its not.)

I think I could do it. Just not very motivated to do so now its not my main phone anymore... which im sure would piss some of you off.. lmao

The Icon is affected by this bug too.

How about Keyocera has a recall on a google phone that doesn't run google apps and give us a decent freaking phone... Ugh.

Kind of lame i bought my phone less then a month ago... For 20 bucks more I could of gotten the LG victory... It seems like that would of been the better choice even if it has less ram.

the way i fixed it was i unabled the app then re-inabled it. only did it for youtube, i havent tested it out on any of the google apps. this phone really sucks :/

Check out the recent reviews for Google Play Services -- lots of phones have been affected, including those that run Lollipop:

Simply put, Android Pay should not have been pushed out. (Google Play Services was updated to 8.1.15 primarily for Android Pay.)

I am surprised that there has not been any reporting in the tech news sites about this.
They dont report it because they only care about devices with snapdragon 800 cpu's with high end specs that cost $700. Meanwhile Google has been pushing all this bloat, integrated Google now with maps integration, google + etc that can only run on those high end devices. Play services alone bloats to over 100mb, same for chrome, news on and on. They should have kept things simple and fully agree that Google pay is the real culprit, and ironically enough they killed one of the few devices that could have used it

900,000+ one star reviews and counting for play services, if you include 2 star its over one million, priceless..

Google Inbox was updated yesterday, and, no, the new version does not work on the Hydro Vibe with Google Play Services 8.1.15.

Google does not seem to be focused on correcting this issue through the affected apps. This looks like either Google Play Services will need a major update that addresses this, or Kyocera pushes out a fix to Android 4.4.2.

what's the likely hood they would though? Kyocera seems to make lots of promises... But I haven't see anything and its been a few months.

I wound up switching to Cricket and buying the Moto E, which is on sale for $20 when you port in your number. I believe the sale ends today. No NFC, less RAM (1GB instead of 1.5GB), no wireless charging, and it does have Android 5.1. I haven't noticed any issues from the reduced RAM, and I didn't use the other two features. I like that the Moto is also water resistant. Good phone so far, and the service is much better (in my area) since it's AT&T instead of Sprint. I wouldn't have looked at alternatives if it weren't for this issue, so thanks Kyocera, Virgin Mobile, and Google. I like my new phone and service much better.

I'm on the $40 plan ($35 with auto-pay). I believe I only got 1GB data with VM, and I get 2.5 with Cricket. The taxes/fees are included with Cricket, too, and my VM plan was actually almost $38/mo.

It's nice to have a relatively cheap phone (compared to $450+ flagship phones) in situations like this. It's also nice not having to worry about losing/breaking it as much. And these phones are as good as the ones people were paying that premium for a year or two ago.
