2.1 OTA Beginning 5/11/2010

I'm friends with HTC on Facebook (we went to high school togehter, and their update at around 6am this morning said the update starts today, it is random, and should be finished in 2 weeks. If someone already posted this then I apologize and have a great excuse, I'm on my lunch break.

Which page, HTC Droid Eris, or the official HTC page? The latter has said NOTHING. The former is not run by HTC, and they will likely continue spreading unconfirmed reports. I would caution the admin of that page, only because I lost my Facebook page for not authenticating it with the state park it represented.

How do they determine who gets the update first? Is it by Date of Purchase, state, random phone number, ??

From what I hear it's just random. Of course, the algorithm to me would have to have some kind of pattern to it, but as far as I have heard it is just a random selection.

for what its worth (next to nothing, but I'm going to say it anyway), I was told by my VZW rep when I bought my phone that the update will be rolled out by date of purchase (or I would say activation rather than purchase).

He's the same guy that told me 2.1 was already being rolled out to the Eris when I bought it in March, so draw your own conclusions. I think it should be by reverse alphabet of the androidforums screen names....but thats just me.

Well if the upgrades do start at midnight (and thats a pretty big if) it would be nice if Verizon would remember that tomorrow is my Birthday and that 2.1 would be a wonderful present. (although for the $$ I shell out to VZ each year, I'm not sure anything from them could be considered a present).

I'm not even that sure why I'm so excited about the 2.1 update other than:
  1. Not wanting to be that kid picked last for dodgeball (er I mean left on 1.5)
  2. 2.1 is higher than 1.5 so it's got to be better right?
  3. Because I just can't wait to start reading the "why 2.1 sucks and 1.5 was better" threads.
  4. Because my finger was getting weak and mindlessly pressing "Refresh" is getting it in shape.
  5. Because the "When are we getting FroYo 2.2" threads can't possibly come soon enough.

To be fair the one thing I really an interested in 2.1 is for the updated Google Nav stuff, and I'm guessing that app development is going to start to focus more on 2.1 in coming months.

Well, if that's the case I should be getting the update any second now ;)

I broke down last week and switched from my eris to the incredible. If this update really happens soon, ill switch back to my eris. Stupid question, but my eris wont update if its not activated right? And if i reactivate it and deactivate my incredible to test the update and see if its all its cracked up to be, will my incredible lose everything?
