2.1 OTA Beginning 5/11/2010

Thats what I figured, but I also figure that I held out this long, so Im just gonna wait till it comes at this point rather than going through the steps of flashing.
I guess there is the real long shot possibility that they made some very minor changes since the last leak, but it doesnt seem so. Especially with all the numbers matching up.

The hope is that the "numbers" are just the OS. The features that are not in the leak, but allegedly in the OTA, are more like Apps, not neccessarily controlled ny "the numbers"

I have seen people holding out hope. And I am one of them. I would like to believe that I didnt hold out for no reason.
I never upgraded because I was happy on 1.5, and figured I will wait until I can get the most finished product possible so that I am sure I will stay happy with a properly functioning device.
But based on reports from people who have received the OTA, it sounds exactly the same as v3.
Some of the promised upgrades are not there, same bugs remain.
Looks like we all could have gone to v3 what about 2-3 weeks ago, and skipped torturing ourselves with the wait. It seems to be the OTA.

Not so sure of this. OTA still has 50% without signal bug. Still shows lower signal bars than normal.
Did not receive pinch to zoom upgrade in google maps. Does not have voice to text key on stock keyboard for texting, does not have friendstream, did not receive 3D gallery...
Nothing seems to be improved from v3.

This right here: "Desk Clock intelligently dims your screen and displays the current
time while charging."

Tells me that it's different. I'm on 2.1V3 and my phone sure doesn't do that, and I've yet to find where I can enable it.

Im not so sure you will get that with the OTA either.

According from the Verizon .pdf you do.

I know, but I have been trying to point out that you dont really get everything that verizon pdf says you do.
First of all it has been altered since it was originally posted.
And once again, you do not get pinch to zoom in google maps, which is also listed on that PDF. But that is a confirmed fact by multiple users who have already received the OTA that you do not.

Well to be fair, when I updated to 2.1V3 I didn't have pinch to zoom on anything until I restarted the phone again, and it was there. I couldn't use it on any program at all, so maybe that's why, I don't know. I guess we'll see, won't we?

I think its "pinch", but that does explain why my screen is broken!

When I upgraded to 2.1V3 I noticed that I didn't have the "pinch" anymore. So, I downloaded "Multitouch Vis Test" and it showed me that the multitouch wasn't working, it would only pick up a single touch. Restarted the phone and there it was, and has worked perfectly ever since. So, either it's a phone issue that requires restarting, or it's just not there. I do know that it's not there in the V3 leak.

Well that would be awesome if you reboot and suddenly the update is everything we have been promised.
I find it hard to believe nobody who got the OTA has had their phone off, but yeah... We will see I guess.
I sure would like something better than v3. If its really not better, I would expect a bug fix to be sent out fairly soon after this upgrade as well.

Since the update is rolling out..can i just do the leaked 2.1 right now and then update it when the Verizon eddition thing pops up on my screen?

Ok, this feature is included in 2.1.3 as well as I am sure in the OTA although I have not received it yet. You need to connect your phone to a PC with the USB cable, then select sync. Up in the nitification bar it should give a triangle with ! inside, if you drag down the notification bar it will say USB debugging connected, tap this and you should get 3 options USB Debugging, Stay Awake & Allow Mock Locations. Check the box next to Stay Awake. Then unmount the phone but keep plugged into the USB or wall charger. Go into Apps drawer select Desk Clock and your done, you will see the desk clock on the screen & will notice it intelligently dimming. As long as you are plugged into a power source the phone will stay awake & dim.

So based on the message in one of the other threads, it seems that even when someone manages to pull the update file off of their phone, there will still be no way for anyone to use that to get the update early. If that is the case, I can just sit back relax and wait my turn for the update. The only reason I was glued to this forum was the possibility that I'd be able to install a downloaded version prior to my slot in the release. Now that I know that isn't an option, it's a huge relief. It'll show when it shows.

Just to be safe, I would recommend just waiting for the OTA. No sense pushing your luck (in case the leak does affect the OTA) to save a few days waiting

I asked the same question earlier and it actually is in v3... haven't tested it yet.

I actually use that setting (leak 3) - Settings, Applications, Development, Stay Awake. I know it sounds a crazy place, but that's where it's at.

In fact, my G1 on 1.6(I think) has it too.

Most people assume that you would still get the OTA on leak v3, but nobody really knows.
If you dont get the update OTA, the download will eventually be posted on verizon's website or pcdphones so you will get it one way or the other.
The way I see it though is that I have waited this long, so Im just going to wait until I can simply press the button to accpet the OTA rather than go through the steps of flashing. It will happen soon enough.

Why wouldn't we be able to?i think that is what we are all waiting for...

Credit to erisuser1. I copy/pased part of his post from the other thread. This explains his rationale.

"Coupla comments.

First, if this works, the immediate benefit will go to the devs: they will be able to unpack the contents of the Verizon .zip file and use them to release ROMs incorporating the latest and greatest (or bug fixes) from HTC/Big Red. After that happens, of course, the benefit will go the wider community - mostly folks who have already rooted, or who hold off installing the OTA in order to root and then get the benefit of the bugfixes/enhancements in the OTA software in a few days time.

What it will not do, though, is let non-rooters get the OTA update quicker. Why? Because the OTA delivers the .zip file into the /cache directory on the phone... and you need to have root privilege to do that. Sure, non-rooters can assemble the URL, and download the .zip file from Google's servers... but if they are not root, there's no way for them to stuff it into the right place on the phone or twiddle a couple of magic bits that make the phone recognize that it's there when the phone reboots. So, they will still need to wait around to get the OTA. If you are planning on staying "factory", and just want to help out, then: Thank you, your assistance is appreciated! But if you are helping because you think it will help others get the OTA a few days earlier - you're barking up the wrong tree."

See this post: Post

It really seems like the post is legit and now that I think about it all the information on XDA devs site indicated that grabbing the file would help the devs to start looking at the packaged code, and they don't mention it as a way to install to another Eris.
