I know a person who would equate these two statements...

Note that I did not say he was a "friend".

Seriously, I remember when the quantity and quality of food on the family table was dependent on the day's tips, so I make sure to tip well, unless there was a serious deficiency in service.

In my eyes, (I have worked for tips too) when I sit down to a meal, all things being equal my server has a standing 20% tip. It can go up from there .... or down, depending on the service. I've tipped $10 on a $10 tab before because the service was just that darn good. I have also left a nickel on a $35 tab cause the service was just that bad.

Nothing is a given, you gots to hustle to make the skrilla.

Depends on the service. Usually I start at 10%.

I'm a 15% sort of guy. Same as mentioned above... it's flexible depending on service. I have been known to peek into the kitchen and thank the cooks for an exceptionally prepared meal. They deserve some sort of compensation for going beyond the required IMO.

I have been in a few establishments where the tipping policy is that all tips get pooled and distributed evenly at the end of the night. It would seem to me that that practice rewards the worst service and penalizes the best.

My "favorite" is when the establishment factors in an automatic 18% tip: you just cost your servers some money.

I mean, twenty percent is a hell of a lot easier to calculate in one's head than eighteen.

Tips:

Oh, I didn't say it couldn't be 2% or less If deserved; No condemnation. Just something on general principle.
I'll go 20-30%.......When it's just me; No date to look like I'm tryin' to impress; And the difference between a simple gratuity, and a really nice tip (if deserved) is what, an additional 2 bucks, on a 16$ bill? Cough it up, make his/her night just a little bit better.

And yeah, the precalculated - preinstalled tip is totally unacceptable; Small service charge for large parties, I understand, OK.

P.S.
I'll behave the same way at the barbers; I feel a little queasy doing it; Feels like "notice me notice me" showboating when you put money directly in their hand;

But the likelihood of seeing that same guy again in the future, pretty high.
And the chances he might have a straight razor at my neck the next time; Also something greater than zero, so..............

P.P.S Trying to impress the waitress? Nah, I'm out the door before she even knows. don't think the thought hasn't crossed my mind once or twice.....But what chance do I have? If I notice her, hundreds of others have too......she's the type that (deserves) and gets that kind of attention every night, can afford to throw this fish back.

Loved the story (forget source) of the "tough guy" in the tattoo parlor, (believe it was real event).

Lay down for an "across the shoulder-blades banner" of the Nietzsche quote (Paraphrasing)- "That which does not kill me, only serves to make me stronger.

And it hurt so bad, that after the first word, he had them truncate the quote, into a bastardized, shorter version of the same thought.

Interview practice is always good. Being interviewed for a job, like most things, is something you get better at the more you do it.

I may have been... it was a phone-interview. It's nice being able to be ruthlessly honest in an interview since I currently have a decently-paying job which I merely dislike (the hate is at least a good six months away, I estimate), and as it turns out, they likely can't meet my salary demand.
