Big List of Android Game Reviews [UPDATED DAILY]

Today's Commentary / Recommendation: Metal Shooter: Run and Gun
Metal Shooter: Run and Gun is a very polished side-scrolling platform shooter. The game shows us, as the players, an ad after each death, but it's a skipable ad, and since each match is rather long (unless you die quickly), the monetization is alright. This is not the optimal way to monetize the game - but it'll do.

The gameplay is fun and challenging, and the power-ups feel really rewarding when you get them. A great game that I can easily recommend if you're into this genre of mobile games.

Today's Commentary / Recommendation: Ninja Arashi
Ninja Arashi is a beautiful mobile platformer focusing on RPG-elements. The monetization is a bit on the heavy side with non-incentivized ads popping up after you die three times. If played in offline mode, however, this won't be an issue at all. I still had a lot of fun playing the game, as you can see in the video :)

Today's Commentary / Recommendation: Shadowmatic
In this second episode of Throwback Thursday Gameplay (TTG), I checked out the gorgeous mobile puzzler from 2015; Shadowmatic. The care of the gameplay is to create shadow figures by rotating and combining elements in front of a light source coming from the right. Sounds boring, but is surprisingly fun to play! The game is free to play on Android for the first few levels, while a premium game on iOS. While already 2 years old, the graphics still hold up, and the gameplay becomes fantastically immersive if played with headphones on.

Today's Commentary / Recommendation: Ultra Fighting Bros 3
Ultra Fighting Bros 3 is a fun, casual sports/action game that isn't super polished, but still fun for shorter gameplay sessions. I do recommend to play the game in airplane mode, though, as there are quite a few ads (as I always talk more about in the video). UFB 3 is overall an alright game, but I did not keep it installed after recording this video, as there are so many other games out there with less aggressive monetization strategies. But what do you guys think? Are you fine with the amount of ads?

In response to your comments about ads, I don't like them either. In fact I'd rather pay for a game without ads (if it's any good). So if a game offers the option to remove them with a payment, that's fine with me.

I also notice that a lot of these games, whilst fun, are very shallow i.e. the gameplay is extremely simple and/or repetitive. Have you come across any good games that offer more in-depth gameplay?
A lot of games these days seem to be clones of another idea. It's not that often we get a truly unique concept which hasn't been done before.

Great reviews though, keep 'em coming!

Thanks for the encouraging words, man :)

I agree to a certain extent that as long as there's an option to pay to disable ads, it is fine. But I don't like it when a developer throws so many ads into their game that you're nearly forced to pay to disable ads in order to play the game at all. It's a fine balance to cut, but luckily a lot of developers get it right too.

I agree that many mobile games are very shallow. This probably also has to do with the fact that mobile games are often played in shorter sessions at a time and mostly casually. There are some exceptions, of course, but to get more in-depth gameplay, you'd most likely have to look at MMOs / RPGs on Android. Most of these are huge money-grabs, though, and often implement a few too many in-app purchases. With that said, games like Lords of Discord (an MMO) show some promise, and Adventures of Mana, and Battleheart Legacy still hold up as great games too (they are paid games).

But yeah, it is very rarely that we see completely new concepts being tried out. But actually, the game I'm showing off today (video below) is something a bit different, although at a very early beta stage at the moment. I'm very hyped about its eventual release, though!

Today's Commentary / Recommendation: Fallen Sword (mobile beta)
Today, I am checking out the Fallen Sword Android beta build for the first time. The mobile version of Fallen Sword is still very bare-bone, but more features will be added throughout the beta, according to the developers. Much of the art is also still just place-holder.
Look at this video as more of a sneak-peak of what Fallen Sword on Android and iOS can eventually become.

Today's Commentary / Recommendation: Symmetrica
For Indie Tuesday this week, I'm checking out Symmetrica. Symmetrica is a delightfully simplistic indie puzzle game with a bunch of interesting levels and a quite fair monetization model (you can pay to disable ads). I definitely enjoyed playing the game, and I'm keeping it installed as there are few puzzle games out there that are truly just relaxing to play. What do you think about the game?

Today's Commentary / Recommendation: Crash of Cars
Crash of Cars is a multiplayer pvp racing game in the vein of slither.io, agar.io and other ".io" games. The game has been made by the Earn to Die developers Not Doppler and is super polished. As for the monetization of Crash of Cars, it is very light and elegant with no obtrusive ads or pay2win elements.
Definitely recommending this game, and even considering doing a series of Crash of Cars gameplay videos, if you enjoyed this one? Let me know what you think :)

Today's Commentary / Recommendation: King Tongue
For this Throwback Thursday, we're revisiting King Tongue, which was released back in 2015, to see if the game holds up to the 2017 standards for mobile games.
The verdict is that King Tongue is still a great game, although ti has a few obtrusive ads on Android (the iOS version of the game is paid, so it has no ads). This just makes the game all the more perfect for those times where you can't be online, though, as the game functions just fine in offline mode, where you naturally won't see any ads :)

Thank you for continuing to provide all of these game reviews. It is greatly appreciated.
Thanks man, I really appreciate your support too. It means a lot, actually. I just enjoy playing and talking about mobile games - and I figured I'd share that interest with the world :)

Today's Commentary / Recommendation:

Buff Knight Advanced is a retro 8-bit styled 2D RPG with certain idle-clicker elements (such as a "restart" mechanic, that allows you to gain additional strength by starting the game all over again). There's a free and paid version of the game, and in the free version, there's a few obtrusive ads that might frustrate some players. In both version, however, the developer has also added incentivized ads, which reward generously - so if you don't mind watching an ad now and then, you can progress much more quicker in Buff Knight.
I recommend you check out Buff Knight Advanced if you're into RPG games, but don't want long play sessions on your phone, as this game is perfect for shorter play sessions.

Glad to hear that you enjoy the game(s). I agree that a lot of mobile games are actually kinda boring, but that's why I started this channel to highlight the best ones and share them with the world of mobile games like myself :)

Today's Commentary / Recommendation: Pocket Squadron
Have you ever wanted to fly a WW1 plane in a 2D dogfighting match? Well, now you can! In Pocket Squadron, your goal is to finish all 20 levels of WW1 dogfights, and continue on to battle it out in the three other play-modes that this game offers. Definitely recommending this game if you like the WW1 style. See the rest in the video :)

Amazing!! The way you have presented the whole thing in this blog is just outstanding!! I would like to see this kind of posts more often!! I would like you to check this interesting game Prince Beard Salon with fresh consept and eye-catching designs!! Enjoy playing this interesting game.
Thanks, appreciate the support :) What are some of your own favorite mobile games these days? The game you linked to doesn't really fit into the type games I typically cover - but thanks for the suggestion (I tend to focus on games played horizontally too).

Today's Commentary / Recommendation: Guns of Mercy
Love oldschool arcade'ish shooters? Boy, oh boy, you're in for a treat! Guns of Mercy is a punishing retro shooter that I just immediately fell in love with. The monetization is perfect (no obtrusive ads at all), and I'm honestly having a hard time finding a whole lot of bad things to say about this game. But watch the video and judge for yourself - do you agree or disagree on my verdict?

Today's Commentary / Recommendation: Castle Revenge
In this Castle Revenge gameplay you'll see why the game is a bit of an odd mix between the strategic elements of Boom Beach or Clash of Clans, and the physic-based puzzles of Angry Birds. Yep, sounds strange - but works surprisingly well.

But how about the monetization in Castle Revenge? Well, take a look as we dive into what this game has got to offer :)

Hm, don't particularly like the long build times. Reminds of Dungeon Keeper, where some things took literally days (real time) to build. That's unless you spend gems, which of course are extremely rare and you have to buy more with real money once you run out.
So when that first room took 15 mins to build I thought this game might be similar. Nice idea for gameplay though, basing it on Angry Birds style demolition.

My thought exactly. I was surprised to see that the first room took 15 entire minutes to build. Of course I skipped it using gems for the sake of the video, but I can see how these long build times could potentially really ruin the gameplay experience long-term. Might do a follow-up video later to see how bad it gets.
But yeah, the gameplay was actually really fun - just wish they'd relax a bit with the build times.

Today's Commentary / Recommendation: Tower Keepers
In this Tower Keepers gameplay review, we take a quick look at the game's core mechanics, art style, and maybe most importantly; monetization.
Overall, Tower Keepers is super polished - but how does it hold up in a world of endless heroic strategy RPGs? Let's find out!

Today's Commentary / Recommendation: Knight's Tour
Do you like puzzles? Do you like Chess? Boy, oh boy, are you in luck! Knight's Tour is a puzzle game about moving the knight (yep, the horsie) from the game of Chess around over 100 maps, avoiding enemies, collecting all the gold, and avoiding death by spikes that mercilessly appear from the ground.

Knight's Tour has a few too many obtrusive non-incentivized ads, but features a rich meta-game with lots of rewarding achievements to unlock, new characters to play with, and even a hidden Tic-Tac-Toe game.

Today's Commentary / Recommendation: Space Garbage Collector
In this Space Garbage Collector gameplay we talk about both the core gameplay and monetization as we try to work out whether or not Space Garbage Collector is worth checking out.

I don't want to spoil the full commentary, but I can already now say, that this game is a must-try if you're a fan of space / sci-fi games!

Today's Commentary / Recommendation: Tiny Gladiators
Tiny Gladiators is an action-packed RPG fighting game with both a singleplayer campaign and multiplayer 1 vs 1 online battles.

As you'll see in the Tiny Gladiators gameplay commentary, the game is rather challenging right from the start, which gives a great sense of success once you succeed in taking down the enemy. The game's got plenty of skills, powerful gear and much more to unlock - so be ready for a looong grind :)

This is a lovely game. Very addictive. Incentivised ads are not at all intrusive. Like it!

It is very lovely indeed - but they did show a few non-incentivized ads that were obtrusive, which I didn't really like. I love incentivized ads, though. But anyway, the overall gameplay is really fun, and I had a good time playing the game :)

so where is the open world game?
I've thought about covering an open world survival game or two - but haven't found any really good ones so far. I have a few potential candidates installed, but if you have any suggestions, I'd gladly hear them? :) Might do a video next week featuring an open world game - so stay tuned.
