Fatality: 2020

Yeah.... I'm balling right now. I was at a Laker event and he signed a Laker shirt for me and I got to shake his hand....I think it was his second year in the league..... I'll never forget that day!!!!!

RIP KOBE........GOAT

Just heard about kobe  WTF? My condolences to his family. I remember the news coverage of him when he first came into the league, not a basketball fan but did watch him play a few times, rest in peace Kobe

As much as I love college basketball I'm not a great follower of the game on the pro level. Even though I have not closely followed the NBA, I know of his talent and impact on the game... most everyone knows. I was installing a new router when my wife, not a fan of any sport, came into the office to tell me of the sad news. She knew of his talent and was quite saddened by his passing. Most tragic! A talent that and level of excellence in all respects that few athletes achieve.

RIP KOBE........GOAT

I'm not a Laker fan. I am a Sixers Fan.

Kobe was one of those athletes that the whole world knew. He brought back the gold to the USA in basketball.
His daughter would have dominated.

RIP to all in that accident yesterday.

If you're not a subscriber, the LA Times has taken down its pay-wall temporarily.

It's hard to put into words how much Kobe meant to LA, to Lakers fans, to true basketball and sports fans around the world and, most importantly, to the people he touched through the many great things he did outside of sports.

If you're unfamiliar with the facts of his life, I suggest reading up on them. The LA Times is a great place to start. His 'Mamba mentality' is second to none, and brought him the many awards, rings, trophies, and admiration he so deserved.

What he was, was a loving husband and father, choosing to retire in order to spend more time with his family. He coached his daughters' basketball and volleyball teams. Long before homelessness was all over the news, he was working--and donating much money--to help the homeless.

He and his wife, Vanessa, have worked very hard for various charitable causes. He built his Mamba Academy not in toney Newport Beach where he lives, but in down-to-earth Newbury Park.

Was he a god? In sports, yes. In life, no. He was a human being, like the rest of us. But unlike most of us, he was thrown into the global spotlight at 17. If you think Kobe is the only famous person to have extramarital sex--consensual sex with another adult--you're very naive.

There's been nothing but wall-to-wall coverage of this on the local stations...and it's just so sad. Finding out that one of his girls, Gianna, had died too was nearly unbearable. Three girls have not only lost their dad, but their sister, and a woman has lost her husband and a child. And that's only Kobe's family.

There were seven others who died in that crash, and as I learn about them I mourn for their families, too.

Two years ago, Kobe won an Academy Award for his short film, Dear Basketball. He was very involved in promoting women's sports and getting fair pay for female athletes. He commented recently that there are several women in the [very under-paid] WNBA who are good enough to play in the NBA--which would put them on equal ground financially with male athletes.

I watched him grow up. From a kid coming off the bench--and causing me to scream at my TV in Dallas, ‘no, don't let Kobe shoot--he'll put up another air-ball!', to the legend he became.

I remember when Gianna was born. I had just moved back here, back home.

He was only 41...there was still so much to do...

Seems like the accident investigation will focus on weather conditions, specifically heavy fog in the area at the time of the crash. The LAPD and LA Sheriff's office had grounded their helicopters due to the fog, but Bryant's Sikorsky went flying. It would be interesting to know who made the decision to fly in those conditions: the pilot, or the owner. Either way, it's an awful waste of life.
the pilot was given a go to fly in those foggy conditions. the pilot was trained to fly and even had a permit to teach in those conditions. according to the la times, the pilot had to descend to maintain a visual on the road as instructed by the air traffic controller. one of the questions was why the pilot was given an ok to fly in the first place.

anyways, it is still hard waking up this morning. seeing all those many people at staples center celebrating the life that was Kobe Byrant just filled my heart with love for my city. i was also hard waking up.....cuz some buddies came over last night and we had a bit tooooo much to drink.....LOL

@ocnbrze, I don't know how you watch TV...well, shows...programs...whatever, but Spectrum SportsNet (channel 691 on DirecTV) has lifted its pay-wall today, too. They're playing nonstop Kobe stuff--not news, we have enough of that elsewhere--but highlights, games, interviews, various things in remembrance.

On a personal note, I want to say that I had been dreading yesterday, the 26th, as it was my dear friend Erik's birthday, and it comes right before my brother's birthday (Feb 3). I met Erik through my brother, and we became best friends. Why dread their birthdays? They both committed suicide... And now this. :(

Last night getting undressed, I noticed I was wearing the ASPCA t-shirt I had on when the police and paramedics broke down my door. I don't know why I even noticed that...I just did, that's all.

This is very stream-of-thought-ish...

On a much personal note, I dread Feburary nineth, it is when I lost my friend who was hit by a ulitity pole.
On the thirteeenth of Feb, it is when my then girlfriend, who was in an accident around 2008ish. I have not talked with her since even online. Been sort of doing my own thing anyways...

Thanks, @ocnbrze.

Yes, it's been crazy. I'm watching channel 5's news right now, and they're showing murals and tributes that have popped up all over LA.

Regarding Kobe, Shaq said that the MOST important thing to him was his family; Magic called him the greatest Laker of all time. That's quite a statement considering we've had the greatest of the greats. 'The Logo' (Jerry West, for those who don't know--that's his silhouette on the NBA logo) said, through tears, Kobe was like a son to him.

The Lakers-Clippers game has been postponed.

Kobe will be inducted into the HoF without a vote.

I've kept Kobe's last game on one of my DVRs....it was so amazing, I didn't want to delete it...

...Mamba out...

Kobe's last game is gonna be broadcast on ESPN 6pm Pacific time

Thinking out loud here...

I haven't heard anyone say anything yet--understandable, considering the bodies haven't all been removed from the crash site.

I'm assuming that there will be a memorial service for Kobe at Staples Center, which will be packed. Then his family will have a private service for Kobe and Gianna at the church they all attend regularly.

Since nothing like this has ever happened before, the NBA has nothing to look back on for reference. I wonder if they'll cancel all games on the day of his public memorial. I mean, at the very least, major players from every team will want to attend, to say nothing of team owners, coaches, assistant coaches, etc. I wonder.

right now, I'm having the time of life while crying......LOL Im screaming and hollering like it was the game 7 of the NBA Finals!!!!!!!!!
How about game 7 of the 2000 WCF?! We were down by 20+ points to Portland, at home, with the 4th quarter running out.

Damn, I can still picture my poor dogs' faces as I stood SCREAMING in my living room in Dallas, "OH MY BLANKING GOD! WE'VE GOT THE BLANKING LEAD!"

And the win.

And then the title... Such good times.

I always record Jimmy Kimmel, and I'm watching last night's show now. Jimmy did it with no audience, and dedicated the whole show to Kobe.

He had Kobe's appearance, along with 3 teammates, from right after their 2009 title. Seeing Trevor, Pau, and Derek again was so cool. Derek is one of my all-time favorite Lakers--can anyone say 0.4?! :) And Pau...who my mom called 'pretty boy'...I loved him so much: smart [medical student, multilingual--as was Kobe], cute, talented. Trevor--so good at steals. Great memories.

We're finding out now so many things most people didn't know about Kobe. The tiny, old woman at the Catholic Church he attended, who demonstrated stretching waaaay up to give him communion. His favorite Mexican restaurant--where he told them not to treat him special...he'd stand in line like everyone else. Bumping into him doing the grocery shopping....putting gas in the car.

The one constant is his family, how he glowed when talking about his children...the accolades from personal friends for what a great father and family man he was...

Stu Lantz found out on the Lakers plane, waking up from a nap, on the way home. This is from KCBS:

"You have known Kobe since day one and you’ve seen him grow and mature into not only the great Hall of Fame basketball player that he is, but the terrific family man that he is, and businessman,” said [CBSLA's Jim] Hill.

“Oh absolutely,” replied Lantz. “I remember the 17-year-old, and it’s just amazing. Not only the growth in his overall character as a person, but just the way he developed a sense of wanting to help other people, because at age 17 you don’t think about things of that nature, but as you grow and mature as a young man, those kinds of thoughts hopefully enter your mind, which they did for him.”

“Even more than a basketball player, even after his retirement, the adulations that he received regarding anything, whether it was his Oscar-winning for the writing of his book, it was just amazing to see not a transformation but a growth in Kobe from 17 to current,” Lantz said.

I wish I saw the whole thing live on tnt:

tnt flew everybody to the staple center and had the show on center court in what should have been the Clippers vs Lakers.

I didn't know anything about it--and I've seen live coverage all day from Staples Center. You'd think someone would've mentioned it.

yeah they did it as a half-time show for one of the NBA games. I was listening to 710 KSPN am radio all day as it was local broadcasters and guests celebrating Kobe. they mention the half time show and played the Jerry West clip as I was coming home from work.

Thanks to your clip, I found a bunch of them from TNT. I've watched a couple, but I think I'll wrap that up for the night.

My husband and I were just talking about the unbearable pain Vanessa and Natalia must be feeling. The new baby won't have any [conscious] memories of her father or sister. The 3-year-old will remember for awhile, but by the time she's around 5 it'll all be gone, although I'm sure the family will keep their memories alive with photos and stories...and videos. Lots and lots of videos.
