One of my least favorite duties is to renew my tags on my vehicles each year. I can do my autos online but I can't satisfy the property tax due and get a new yearly sticker for my Jayco trailer. I must personally go to one or the other county tag offices, East side or West side of Wichita, to do the transaction. Why??? I wish I had an acceptable answer. It is my least favorite chore because every year it is messed up in some way. Last year, as an example, I stood in line for almost an our to pay my dues. When it was finally my turn to go to a window, I was informed their card reading service was down and I could pay with a check or cash. I never carry the check book and I seldom carry that much cash. I had to leave, run to an ATM, pay to get my own money, and return to the facility. Yesterday, I went to the East side facility only to find that it was permanently closed with a sign to visit the West facility. I drove across Wichita to the West facility with a very bad attitude. Fortunately, I had calmed down by the time I arrived and found a parking space.
I go inside to find a packed house. I am uncertain if I should have called to get my phone number in their que or pull a number from a dispenser that I didn't see or what. I walked to the info desk to ask. The guy asked if I doing title work or renewing and he gave me a number with an odd look on his face and said here is a number for you. I sat down and grimaced at the monitor scrolling the que. The fifteen minute list, then the 30, and the 45, etc. I sat in dismay. Then the list scrolled back to the beginning, it started at the five minute wait people and there I saw my number. I looked in disbelief at my number and then the monitor. Back and forth my eyes went while thinking this just can't be. The intercom broke my trance as it announced my number. I walk to window 16 as the people I was sitting near gave me the middle finger look. I handed my number tag to the clerk still doubting it was really happening. She smiled and asked, how can I help you today.
