Official GSM Hero 2.1 Thread

on Vodaphone and tried putting the date forward a month, instanly found a firmware update and downloaded it but after it got to 100% it didn't seem to update right away, took about 15 minutes then seemed to do it, dont know what that was about?

tried putting it forward a month, but, nothing happened :( am on orange. I tried restarting the phone aswell, still nothing, anyone else on orange had it yet?

So where does this leave people running a 2.1 rom?

Do I have to go back to the official 1.6 rom and then do the OTA official updates? Will a 2.1 rom update be available that I can flash using a USB cable?

Is it likely that somebody will root the official rom and make it available for install like the existing 2.1 roms?

They already have. All the current 2.1 ROMs are based on the Taiwanese release. There wont be any practical difference once they use the English ones as a base.

I am on 3 UK.. Tried changing 2 months ahead, but nothing happened.. Help wanted...

The firmware on my phone is 1.5 and build number says 2.73.771.73 waaats tat???
When i gave my serial number on htc website it showed me a ROM for download but tat too had the same build number... Now waat should i do???

Non-carrier-encumbered Hero on Orange Slovakia: Moving the date forward got me an update prompt. Did not choose to upgrade just yet, I'll wait for more success/failure reports. :)

EDIT: After reading a lot on xda forums and here, I decided to cross this bridge.

First I flashed the original recovery.img (which I had backed up before I installed Amon-RA's in the past) using Recovery Flasher app, and then I travelled in time to July :), downloaded and installed the update. After spending about 5 minutes on the "htc" boot screen, I got the new update running. Yay.

Unbranded Hero running on O2 in the UK here. Put the date forward by a month and got the update prompt. Downloaded it (about 5MB) and the phone restarted a couple of times (and took ages to start up, thought it'd bricked).

Now I can't wait to get 2.1!

Unbranded Hero on giffgaff; moved date and got prompt, took forever over Edge, then nothing. Then Opera stopped working because date was incorrect?! set date back and waited a few mins. nothing. So set date forward again, got prompt again, chose download again and it instantly started to load the new files. Date correct again, and all normal with new build number as expected from hTC's release.

Report from Bulgaria.

(after i went back from Villain to stock 1.5, which took me 2 days and a Windows reinstall...f*ck htc sync 2.0.33)

Moved the date to 1 month ahead + restart and still nothing.:(

Bought sim free hero in November am with Virgin.

Update part one arrived this morning

Did not have to alter date.

Long time to reboot but all well.

Build number now 2.73.405.93

Moved the date for a month, got the update. It downloaded and rebooted, leaving my Hero for 30 minutes with a black screen.

Eventually, I gave up, rooted it and moved to VillainRom 10.3. :)

Traitor :)

Side note: did the update arrive at the moment you changed the date?

CONFIRMED

After i set the date to 15 07 2010 it immideately checked and found an update.

I guess that setting it a month ahead tricks the phone into thinking it has been a long time since it last checked for update and run the checker at once.

Yer i must admit i am surprsed but rolling the date forward works it's downloading now. :)

2 weeks till the full update then.

I also treid the checkin command that that did nothing so i think we can forget that one in future.

After update the phone has a menu item to check for updates so no need for that code at all.

Everyone that moved 1 month ahead and got nothing.....Did you make sure that you had either mobile-broadband or wifi connected before doing the date thing.

Mine was connected to the internet via my wifi and after i set i 1 month ahead it said that it had an update within 20 seconds.
