Same here. The only thing is my phone has been back to HTC in the last couple of months for a screen replace - they flash your phone with the latest available ROM as a matter of course (apparently).

That probably explains that....
I had assumed the same thing. Always tends to be the case in my experience.
Wasn't there confirmation earlier that Tmo' were in testing phase; maybe the preparatory update is finalized, and the same for all, so there's no real reason they can't release it; then release the update 'Royale' as and when they can be bothered.

Fair enough Android is a platform built by the people and for the people but when its left to us joe public to iron out issues that should have been done by HTC is very poor business practice but i can understand how some leaks get out and its easier for companys like HTC to sit back and watch instead of run updates and tests on 200 phones compared to several thousand out in the wild.

Same here. I'm on "stand my" mode with a custom rom waiting to be installed.
The sad thing about the upcoming Friday is that we'll HOPEFULLY receive "the first" part of the update. So add 2-3 more weeks for the other one...

i think this is part of the issue that HTC has with the hero as for soem reason it got Licensed per country not per region, there seems to be at least 5 build of the software out there and they have to make sure it upgrade will work for all of them.
still again they could tell us this!

I guess we'll never know the true reason why we've been waiting since (around) last November for a major update; whether it be for marketing or technical reasons.
I'll be waiting until Friday before making my next move (have to seriously consider re-rooting and going back down the custom ROM path). Part of me rather cynicaly thinks we might just be disappointed once more.
There's a generic (unbranded) build (405), and then a separate build for every "partner carrier" (Orange = 65, T-Mobile = 110. H3G = 771, Chungwa Taiwan = 751.... etc). HTC will test the updates to ensure compatibility with the hardware, but each carrier also has to ensure that their update passes strict legal and technical requirements for connection to the public network in their locale.
So the update for this (my) build version must already be good to go, and it's being held back to coincide with the carriers who need to get up to speed?

I'm in the same boat, but to be fair most of HTC's business is going to be done through the mobile providers rather then retail sales, so it's in their interest to play fair.
It doesn't take a genius to work out why Sprint had the update over a month before the rest of us.

I've just noticed that my battery has gone flat overnight which has never happened before, usually 90% or more left. Could this mean it tried to dowload something during the night?
There's no 'System Software Update' added or other changes that I can see, but if the battery failed half way through there wouldn't be.
Any other Orange users notice anything unusual?

Not neccessarily, as the previous generic update went "live" a full week before the first of the carrier versions. For all we know, it could be the other way round.... everyone else is ready to go but an issue has arisen with the generic build and (for example) the O2 network, which doesn't carry the handset itself.
What would happen if, like me, you turn data off overnight to save battery and avoid being woken up by incoming email notifications etc? (And yes, I know about Timeriffic etc but just switching data off works for me).
Would this mean that I might miss the update and if so is there any way to force a check?

We simply don't know, Matt. There's never been an OTA update before so we don't really know if the handset polls a server or if the check is triggered from the other end. I doubt it would be missed for long - same scenario applies if you're flying or even traveling by train (tunnels etc).
