samsung stratosphere

Hey all, I am going to come into a posession of a samsung stratosphere, and i was wondering, if I can root it and flash it to a custom rom, is there anyway that i can use it on AT&t? I figure theres a way since it has a slot for a sim card any help greatly appreciated!

I have lost the messaging icon on my bottom row menu When the phone was new it had Phone,contacts,messaging, and Applications on bottom row. It has disappeared and no one at verizon knows how to replace it, except with factory reset. Anyone know how?
