17 year old banned from the U.S.

It all depends on whether this is hate email or threatening email. Specifics are not given out.

If it was threatening, then I don't see how anybody can argue against this ban. I am sure Bush got threatening e-mail (ALOT OF PEOPLE HATED HIM, especially outside of the US), and I am sure it was taken care of (if it was not, somebody is not doing their job).
 
Here's something to think about... if the FBI did, in fact, intercept this message it's an indication that Project Carnivore, which supposedly was cancelled back in 2001, may still in operation. Though it's unlikely that the FBI is still using the Carnivore software I'm wondering how they happened to have a packet sniffing server at the ISP of this kid to intercept the message (unless maybe the kid was using a big US-based e-mail service like Yahoo!, Hotmail, or GMail)?

I'm really starting to wonder whether or not the interception had actually been done by the Puzzle Palace (NSA)? Supposedly the NSA has an Echelon listening station in the UK near Yorkshire and another near Cornwall. And thanks to the somewhat secretive UKUSA agreement it's all perfectly legal...

And what about freedom of expression? He did not attempt to murder / hurt anyone... why is this an issue?

This reminds me of South Africa.... there was a kid that pulled the finger at Jacob Zuma during a rally.... he got thrown in prison... :mad:

Well it's not on the news here in Britain. Anyway, who cares about some idiot kid who thinks he's important enough to send an email to the president of the USA? Clearly he hasn't got the judgement to realise it was a stupid idea, he deserves what he gets.

Just because it's the president of the USA does not mean he has better human rights than anyone else!

He is only 17 that's why his "judgement" / approach was slighty rude... he has the right to an opinoin here!

I don't get why people are defending him. Surely you can't be that stupid to assume you'll get away with threatening the president.

But the main thing that irks me is that he thinks he's important enough to email the president. We don't need pretentious little bastards like that thinking they're entitled to do stuff like this.

Why have the American government not shown this email to the rest of the world if it so bad / offensive? Why has the kid not shown it to the rest of the world?... is the kid being threatened himself?

I'm being critical towards US, I'm still sitting on the fence scratching my head for banning that kid or even bother using FBI to track him down, but guess even FBI is bored nowdays.

Well to be quite honest the only reason this trash is even getting any airtime is because of all the Obama hate mongers. Anytime the haters feel like they've 1 upped the president or if it paints him in a bad light, they're going to scream it loud to the roof tops. Nobody even gives a shit about this dumbass 17 yr old kid.
 
Whether you agree with the individual in the office or not, what a lot of you fail to realize is that threatening the president (and probably any head of state in a European country maybe our friends in the UK can clarify) is a crime (yes I realize we do not know the contents of the letter)

You cannot simply do whatever you feel like doing and then make the excuse that you were drunk or high. I also do not buy the "age as a factor" argument. If you are old enough to join the military or operate a car, then you are old enough to take responsibility for your stupidity.

I am not (nor is anyone else here by the way) qualified to say whether this guy is a threat to anyone or not, but he opened his mouth and now he has to deal with it.

Hmm... I am not 100 % sure i agree with this...

"Wether or not you agree with the person in the office" I do not agree with "rules is rules" and i am afraid to say...some rules / laws are not perfect at all.... look at the gun recall in South Africa... that is crazy.

And age is a very important factor actually.... do you not remember how all childish we are at certain times / periods in our lives? I used to rhym with everyones names... i used to be called Wayne the Pain... it is what children do...

And shud Mr Obama have not such a huge chip on his shoulder? He's just a kid here for goodness sake here!

As an example, back in 1975 one of Charlie Manson's followers, Lynette "Squeeky" Fromme was imprisoned for life for waving a Colt 1911 semi-automatic handgun, without a chambered round, in the direction of late President Gerald Ford. In the time it would have taken her to pull back the slide on that Colt to advance a shell into the chamber she'd have gotten herself turned into a human swiss cheese by the Secret Service.

My guess is that tthe government looks at it not so much in terms of what was said... but more likely that it was said.

Wow... i never nknew that!

Thats also crazy! But she never had a loaded weapon... that's sad.

But my point here is... he is a youngster... he had his whole life ahead of him... but now there will be consequences here... i feel sorry for him.

He was just voicing his opinoin...why can we not voice our opinions?

If you read anything about Squeeky you'll know that she IS crazy!

She says her intent was not to harm the President but simply because she held a firearm was enough for a Federal court to convict her of attempted assasination of the President.

While this is not a comparable scenario to the boy in England, it's simply proof that the U.S. Government takes threats against the President very seriously.

You can... but in this country you are responsible for your words/actions! Say anything that can be construed as a threat and the wolves pounce on you. In the boys case they can't exactly arrest a citizen of another nation so they simply make sure that he can never set foot in this country.

Hmm i have another question. Is it not illegal for a third party such as the FBI or whoever read that email first and is it not an invasion of privacy? Was it not for Mr Obama only?

Why does the world let this happen? This whole situation makes me think twice about immigrating to ths USA...if they say they believe in freedom they most make me know it is true...
 
Hell... back in the 1970's the US Government went after the late John Lennon with a vengeance. Simply because they didn't agree with his opinions... and the fact that he was a very well respected celebrity, they tried to have him deported from the U.S.

Gives one food for thought... maybe George Orwell pegged the concept of "thought crimes" way back in the 1940's when he wrote "1984".

Go read up on Project Echelon and Project Carnivore. Reading and listening to other people's communication happens on a daily basis... And thanks to the Patriot act it's all perfectly legal for the U.S. Government to do this.

Big Brother has happened already here... i am sure something illegal has occured because of an invasion of privacy and they are not showning that email for a very sinister reason... this is such an evil thing that has happened here!!

I don't trust any governments in this world... :(

The kid has no right to come to the US. That's a privilege we extend to foreigners as we see fit. Based upon his letter, we are simply not willing to extend that privilege to this particular foreigner.

Why hasn't it been shown to the rest of the world? Because we aren't prosecuting the kid. He's not going to jail. He's just not being allowed into the US, and for that, we don't have to prove a thing to anyone.
