2.1 OTA Beginning 5/11/2010

I could just be reaching on this one...but let's say we do turn in our Eris for whatever bug/hardware issues we have. Since they stopped manufacturing on the ERIS would there be ANY Possible way they'd give us the incredible in place of the ERIS?.....i know i know i just had to ask, maybe someone had an experience with that situation.

I wondered the same thing. I would think they would try to replace it with the Droid instead of the incredible though.

that would be awesome, however it wouldn't happen :p verizon would just send you a "certified like new" device... but hey it could be worse, at&t would probably just give you one of those world war two backpack radios with the hand crank to use until your next upgrade :D

They'll give you whatever isn't selling and/or whatever costs less to them. They're not going to offer a $400 Incredible when they can offer a $150 Droid. (I just made those figures up to prove a point.) Hell, worst case scenario, buy an Eris of Craigslist or ebay.

You will get a certified, like-new Eris if you do a warranty exchange. The Eris hasn't reached the end of its support life, just its sales life. If you want to get nit-picky about things the LG Ally is actually going to replace the Droid Eris in the line-up. The Devour is the low-end Android device, followed by the Ally, Droid and Incredible.

My wife had a Storm from last year. She turned it into Verizon a total of 7 times, which included one insurance replacement due to damage. I was able to get her into a Storm 2, but only because of the circumstances. You all have likely not had 7 returns on your Eris. Any amount of moaning and groaning isn't going to get you a Droid, Incredible, or even an Ally.

I've said it once and I'll say it again. I learned my lesson with the Sense UI and Android. I'm not getting a Sense UI device again until the Android fragmentation is resolved. Updates are slower to arrive to specialty-OS based devices. (And those with lower specs in general)

just thought i would add that they still manufacture dead phones, they're just not available retail... verizon actually has one of the better (or worse depending on how you view it) warranty programs

So for all the people out there that have the V3 Leak...was it hard to do? I've never messed with my phone as far as rooting or anything, so is it hard to do? Is there any danger that I could screw up my phone? Also, does V3 have the gallery and the turn by turn google directions?

That was my thinking also.

I have to say this again, because of my past experience with Verizon and firmware updates OTA... Expect this process to take not just days or weeks, but maybe a month or two. Seriously.

On every phone I have had, I didn't even GET OTA updates - I usually had to bring the phone into the store, and ask if they had any updates for it. Only THEN did any update occur, and it was by hand, from a tech...

This is when it was well-known and publicized in forums etc. that firmware updates were available OTA in most areas. The servers weren't centralized, and they made it sound like it was tower-to-tower in how they were updated with software. Frankly, unless this process has changed at Verizon's end, OTA updates are just NOT a priority for them - they disperse it as they wish, when they wish, if they wish, and never in a rush. Some areas will get it right away, some weeks from now, and in some backward areas (probably mine) we'll be looking at July of 2020. :P

Has even one person posted an actual photo of the actual OTA update? All I've seen match the v3 leak - and I'm finding that to be kinda buggy. I hope that's not what everyone's looking forward to.

The gallery is a separate .apk file you can do a search for in the forums here and find. Turn by Turn directions / Google Navigation is available in the v3 leak. You will eventually be prompted by the market to update Google Maps to the latest version. (It will give another Navigator icon) Personally, the Navigator for Sense is much cleaner.

Do the v3 leak at your own risk. At this point it has the same info as the official update. There is no telling if they are one in the same, or if if in the end Verizon was able to polish up the final build.

Go back a page.

they wont give you a different phone with warranty replacement anymore... they used to offer that after you'd had 4 replacements, but this policy was recently dropped... i know because the people who come in here with their 3453049583409 piece of shit blackberry complain about it constantly saying "why cant I just get a droid instead of another one of these?" and I chuckle inside :D

Take a peek at those photos... it's a clear OTA notification and download/install process. C'mon, do a little more browsing before you start questioning.

Jesus 7 times returned?? It's supposed to only be 4 or 5 warranty returns, then they are supposed to give you a device that is comparable to it... a few years back my mom went through 4 Moto Q's, then they just upgraded her to the BB Pearl (back when that was a legit device)... I imagine that with the eris out of production that if you go through 4, they will upgrade you to either the Moto Droid or the Incredible

I saw exactly that, and that's exactly why I question it. What I'm trying to say is it proves NOTHING. As much as I enjoy this forum, I don't see a lot of critical thinking going on here...

I could take those same pictures with my phone right now and SAY it's the OTA (because my v3 numbers match that screen exactly). With everyone excited at fever pitch here, I wouldn't put it past someone to tweak everyone for a little fun. All I can think about is when everyone thought they were getting it at the end of April, etc.

The screens posting the "update notification" really don't prove anything either. It doesn't say WHICH version it's updating to. That could be 1.5 to 1.5 patched (which I remember updating to when I first got the thing).

Not to mention that the "update" file size isn't even close to what the leaks are... some 30% smaller. Hmm.

I guess when I start seeing those results en masse (that v3 IS the OTA), I may believe it... or when someone posts a newer build number... or when I get the damn OTA update myself (better yet!) :D

The 77.7mb is the dead giveaway!

The why are you even following this thread? Anything on this entire site "could" be faked. We're all potentially just forum robots generating random quotes.

The whole internet is a potential fake.

You want 100%, undeniable fact? Too bad, it don't exist. I was going to say go watch your phone and wait. It's the ony proof you'll get. But heck, how do you know that your phone is really downloading an update? Could just be random images intended to rob you of up to 45 minutes of airtime you could be using for your own purposes....

Has anybody in New Jersey gotten the update, I am running 2.1 V3 and wondering if I will be receiving the update, I do not expect getting the update. Also, any news on when we will be able to manually install the update, so that if people with 2.1 v3 can install the official one?

No...NKT said it is the exact same. It IS the exact same. This individual can be trusted completely.

So now that people know this, why squander around waiting for the exact same software when you can go download the same thing right now? It is in a post made by Caddyman that says 2.1 v3 download. Do you just yearn to see that pretty upgrade banner? ;)

This is how it started.

The Feb. after the Storm came out I got my wife the phone for Valentines Day. From day one the phone seemed to run like a champ. I was impressed with it at first. I thought it had a nice build to it and it seemed snappy enough. After some use it started to lose its luster, though. I was still able to navigate and use apps more quickly on my Palm Centro. Around the beginning of April my wife started to have a lot of issues with her phone. Examples include multiple freezes forcing constant battery pulls, delays answering calls, etc. For my wife, it was a mess. She has a condition called Rheumatoid Arthritis. Aside from having internet and e-mail, the primary reason for purchasing the phone was size alone. My wife needed something to grip easily.

So, imagine having bad arthritis and not being able to constantly pull the phone out of its protective case and do a battery pull. (Somtimes 2 or 3 times a day) For a CSR @ Verizon, it was enough to justify a warranty replacement. The replacement my wife got then had a lose touch screen. Enter replacement # 2. It ran well for a while, but my wife got a little careless and we filed an insurance claim. Several months later I ran into financial problems and had the account put on suspension. I paid the account off within two months and restored services. (It was that high of a bill - lesson learned, though) Account is restored and the phone gets a much needed update but still functions poorly. (This is now August 2009) Enter replacement # 3. Phone works for about a month, speaker goes bad. Enter replacement # 4. Screen is too loose again. Enter replacement # 5. Screen is tight, but backlight isn't as strong even on the highest brightness setting.

Enter replacement # 6. This was all before November, 2009.

December 2009 - my wife is given a Storm 2.

Guess what, it too is a piece of shit.

Next phone for her is going to be an Android based device.
