2.1 OTA Beginning 5/11/2010

OMFG, i dont know how to say it any simpler.

look at the info in front of your faces

look at the build number for v1, v2, v3, and the ota

v1 was lower then v2, v2 was lower then v3, v3 is THE SAME as the OTA

could they have done some tiny tweak? yeah maybe...but it would be nothing that anyone would ever notice

look at the feedback from the OTA people, nothing has changed, they all have the same thing as v3 people. the audio bug i STRONGLY believe is a harware error that affects some erii.

i bet if you updated to v3 and had the audio bug, went to the store and got a replacement phone, and took it home and went right to v3, it would NOT have the audio bug....seriously....we all loaded the same damn software so why would 1/2 of use have it and 1/2 not?

ps. tdiana, plz plz plz stop posting stuff you get in emails from verizon. we all know WAY more then they do about what the situation is here

even new people here know more then the cs reps.

Pinch to zoom does not work on the Eris 2.1v3 or the Eris 2.1 OTA with Maps v 4.2.0. It works just fine on the Moto Droid with the exact same version of Maps.

By the way, regarding the number of bars of reception, I have a Moto Droid alongside my Eris 2.1v3.

The Moto Droid shows 4 bars of signal, the Eris shows 2. The Eris makes better calls with clearer recption than the Moto Droid does to the same phone numbers almost at the same time. IMHO the actual number of bars is irrelevant and is a programmer's choice.

I think Verizon is doing exactly what they said they would do. Distribute a limited number of OTA's over a wide geographical area and then wait 24 hours before rolling it out en masse. If problems show up, they will delay it further.

Thats what Ive been thinking too.
All along I havent been expecting anyone else to get it until later tonight.

I seriously doubt they would even do a small tweak without changing some of the release numbers. We are talking about professional programmers that need traceability. In fact, I believe several of the numbers are automatically generated. It is what I would do if it were my project.

I personally believe that the 8 digit hex number following the Kernel version is a 64 bit checksum of the file and is automatically generated.

I also believe that the CL number following the Build number is a Change list ID. It would be what software guys normally do and would also be generated automatically.

So like you, I believe that 2.1v3 is exactly the same as 2.1 OTA except I am even more strident. I don't even believe that minor tweaks would happen unless the release numbers were changed.

Finally some sanity. (you too, Caddyman).

I've been reading this forum for weeks and it's like the more speculation there is the more is speculated about.

When those VZW pdf's were posted it was like the Eris forum exploded and we're all just going mad crazy trying to get our update. I have to admit that was me for a few days. Then I was just sitting down listening to a podcast on Ustream and it hit me... it's a PHONE! As soon as we all have the update (leak or OTA) we'll just be bored with it again. After all, it is a device for communication, not to be confused with communicating about. I don't even find this forum particularly useful right now because every thread I read somehow degrades into OTA random questions that have already been answered a hundred times.

Seriously, I'm super stoked to get the OTA (just not going to use the leaked versions for my own personal reasons) and the nice features it will bring but lets all just calm down and be a little sane.

One really nice thing that has come from all the hype is that I have learned about a LOT of apps I would have otherwise missed, mostly because people are concerned it doesn't or won't work on leak v1/2/3.

Anyway, happy waiting. Thanks to all the useful contributers who have actual information to share!

Finally?!? Ive been mostly repeating myself all day!
V3=OTA, Update is as planned and on schedule, just in a break, we will start seeing people getting the OTA later tonight.
I should have just copied some of my posts, and pasted them whenever they fit.

At the same time, I really dont believe her.

We can pretend that we're hockey players in the playoffs! Nobody shaves their beard until the last eris gets updated! (women exepmt of course) Then maybe we'll get our message across to vzw. If you're gonna make us wait, things are gonna get ugly... Well maybe just us. But I digress...

lol alright then.
So she was right about when it started. Im guessing the firmware comment is explaining why it has been so delayed all the way from January 11th to March and all the other supposed dates that never happened.
In that case your lady still sucks. Thats really old news.:)
 
It sounds like v3 is OTA to me. The only way the OTA could have additional features or bug fixes without having another build number would if v3 was leaked during the beta phase of the final build.

I'll find out when I get it, not holding my breath for anything special.

Sorry to be vague. Your posts are actually useful and interesting. I guess I've been feeling...well, the threads have been so random the past few days. I'm enjoying the ability to have a real conversation and follow a thread again.
