2.2 Froyo for the Captivate Discussion

you have to have the phone rooted and then have root explorer. Once you do all that you change the the 0 to a 1 in the db settings. By doing that it allows non market apps to install. As for the 2.2, it does not come rooted. XDA has a one click that is fairly simple. It also has the allow non market apps option but I couldn't get that part to work on mine.
Could you be a bit more specific with these instructions? I am rooted, I have root explorer, where do I find the db to change the settings, and what setting specifically do I look for?

Using Root Explorer, navigate to dbdata / databases / com.android.providers.settings. Copy settings.db to your sd card, edit it on your pc with an editor changing 0 to a 1 next to non-market apps. Copy the file back to the original directory. Reboot.

Final Date for Galaxy S update (Nov 11th) - Samsung Captivate

I've turned my interest on the potential of Samsung producing the "Nexus 2" that is supposedly releasing with Gingerbread next month...

If that's the case then the devs could have that ported over to our phones by year's end which would be awesome.

Same

If I don't get the nexus successor, it's hardware seems to be so similar that it should be no problem porting it to the captivate.

the nexus s could definitely be cool, but you will have to pay non contract price and its just not that much different to be worth it for me. gingerbread is nice though

Yeah I think they're going to sell it directly, unlocked, through google as well though, so the pricing shouldn't be too ridiculous. I'm probably just gonna wait for the new 2011 phones to come out though.

Anyone notice the picture in that artice says Novermber 2011? (How Ironic). The language of that article seems very.. unprofessional too.

I wonder if it's legit. I do know that the release must be getting close however. Since the ROM was almost ready for the euro version a few weeks ago and verious betas for the US versions have been around for almost a month.

Guess well see.

The Nexus S or Nexus 2 is still just a rumor BTW
Nexus Two does (or doesn't) exist, is (or isn't) being released this year -- Engadget

I've seen posts like "Official Froyo with the GPS fix.

Well, I haven't seen anything from Samsung saying teh GPS fix is in it. As others noted, the "GPS optimization" was in that push that improved, but didn't fix it.

Since when does SamsungUK speak for all of Samsung. If they have this information, and it were true, why wouldn't SamsungUS release it as well? All they say is by the end of the year. Wasn't it SamsungUK that said they would have froyo by the end of September? Now it's the beginning of November and still no froyo...yah a legitimate BS tweet.

called android tech support through AT&T and spoke to one of the specialists today. While I was getting the order for a new phone (dude was really nice so thought "might as well") i asked if there were any updates for 2.2 on the sgs. The dude said "they are telling us that the official date will be sometime in february". I was like, that's forever away. he just said "don't worry, it will be here soon enough." i asked if they mentioned anything about 2.3 or 3.0 or whatever and he said all he was told was the next update was coming in february.

but just thought I would let you know. Seems like February could be our next major update  so far away :(

Not to try to pick an argument, but do you mean by "60-70% of those who've tried it" people who (a) decide to visit this forum and those who (b) decide to answer such polls? This is not necessarily a representative sample of the Captivate/Galaxy S user base.

When I spoke to a higher level tech support about the problems with my phone including the glass that needs to be replaced (dropped/broke) he mentioned without provocation that Samsung had finished with 2.2 months ago and it was AT&T holding it up.

I wouldn't take that too seriously. 2.2 has been available through unofficial channels for a month or so now, but no one knowledgeable will call it "finished". This week, a new build of 2.2 was leaked and appears to be closer to what AT&T would release (this leaked version had some AT&T apps, and some features removed like MobileAP). This newer FroYo build (JJ4) also has bug fixes that were discovered in the earlier build, again supporting the fact 2.2 has not been finished for months now.

So this is one to throw out there as a strange option. I called Samsung support to pester them about 2.2. The guy I talked to said there was no official update announcement. He did give me the option of sending in my phone and they would manually update it to 2.2. This kind of threw me for a loop so I asked why they could to that and not release it outright. It basically boiled down to infrastructure and carrier delays. He did say that the release should be "very, very, very soon".
