2.2 Froyo for the Captivate Discussion

It has been written on SAMSUNG'S home webpage describing the Captivates' features since before launch. It never said WHEN but definitely explicitly said it would/will.

@shark974 - Americans bitch and complain more about the government than any and all corporations. There's whole channels that basically only cover political crap. I'm fairly certain Americans are displeased with their government just as much if not more than corporations. I'm also fairly certain that disliking large, faceless, cold-hearted, greedy, and immoral conglomerates is universal and crosses all ethnic and national boundaries. If we had to be "trained" to feel bitterness towards them then the companies have already won. Also, how many of those phones on android central are state-of-the-art? All the phones that are part of the Galaxy S cohort have froyo already. Taken in this light Samsung is the outlier. And everybody likes updates. Even the ones that aren't expecting an update. All the people that educated themselves before buying this phone already knew what kind of update support to expect from Samsung. They definitely aren't disappointing. That doesn't mean we're going to roll over. Doesn't mean they want froyo any less or keep the anticipation at bay. What you read and hear is just frustration for an update that is really, by industry standards, way overdue (this phone could have and should have been released with froyo). Not to mention the expected poor samsung customer service. What's the last official SamsungUS remark regarding froyo except to basically say "we don't know"? I think Americans aren't bitter enough, if they were companies like Samsung would go under or learn new tricks.

But it'd just so stupid the endless whining over a SMARTPHONE, that is basically fricken AWESOME.

If you Americans put 10% as much energy into good causes as pointless selfish endless whining, we'd solve a lot of problems. But I guess thats why Americans are so fat too. They want it now now now! So Americans are incredibly fat because of this attitude.

While I would love to rip into your tirade against America, I won't because this has NOTHING to do with the subject at hand, that is, the official OTA 2.2 release for the Samsung Captivate. I suggest we get back to that subject, and not turn this into a soapbox for how you feel about the world's nations.

^^+1. As an American I'll admit many faults..but that was a stupid tirade from an ignoramus..notice no location on his info

I'm so happy that I don't have a Craptivate any more. I knew this would be extended ad nauseam.

And the Kies issue makes me ill.

For you UNIX heads, I would make or download a Windows Virtual Machine for VMware or VirtualBox and pass USB through to that.

I cant get KIES to work/install in either a virtual machine (VMware and VirtualBox, I might try Parallels on the Mac sometime though) or WINE...
On Ubuntu 10.10 or Mac OS X (Leopard)

It seems it has issues with the drivers and hung at the use of any of the "widgets" (all of the applications to use, including Firmware Upgrade) the one time it did come up in WINE... I can't figure it, I got my friend set up playing WOW on his Ubuntu box, but yet I can't get little KIES up and running...

NM, I see what you are saying now I think... eh, I'll wait until the word that it is officially through KIES before I start dedicating appreciable amounts of time and energy to it (or just drive to my Parents' house and use one of their Windows computers)...

Does Froyo Fix the DHCP Netmask issue on the Galaxy S? Does it actually take the DHCP info from DNS and populate netmask as 255.255.255.0 instead of 255.0.0.0 on some networks? THIS IS ALL I WANT OUT OF FROYO! I want to finally be able to connect to my workplace's damn Wi-Fi. I take a lot of crap from my Motorola Droid and iPhone coworkers because of this enormous issue with the Galaxy S.

More info on this here:

Thats fixed in the beta Froyo build. I had the same issue until I upgraded to the Cognition beta.

It seems like everyone on this thread is forgetting about the major bottleneck... and that would be AT&T. Even though Samsung has given a release date, AT&T takes their sweet time pushing ANYTHING out from manufacturers. They are too busy trying to figure out ways to disable gingerbread and create their own so they can make extra money! Can you say FM transmitter?!? AT&T are the biggest greedy turds out there in my opinion. Bottom line is that we probably wont see an OS update until mid next year at best.

I hope it's soon. I want the official version. Too many delays on this thing, when was it supposed to happen like mid September was it? Although before we bitch and moan, remember that most Android phones except for Samsung do not play Divx files natively. I think that's a huge Samsung plus that people forget about, and it seems to be a unique thing with Samsung.

Greeting's all just fyi I talked this guy the other day who has a Captivate and he just downloaded Froyo 2.2 here in San Diego does anybody else have it and how did you get it? and yes I did see the guys phone for myself and he's got it did not have time to ask him how or where he got it

you can get cognition 2.2 which is a rom based off of froyo

you can get the froyo leaks which are stock froyo

and then there are other roms i dont remember the name of, look in the root/rom section at the top and youll see most of them

I run Froyo. Just download the ROM and install it to the phone. A quick search can find many forums with instructions on how to do it. It's also been verified you can go back to stock and do the official OTA update later, which is a good indication that you can get the official Froyo update later (but I'm sure there will be a better ROM out then). If you don't have cognition you can still root later, then change out the File system manager to try to change r/w priorities. Good luck.

the captivate is so smooth on 2.1 other then flash what is 2.2 going to give you??

Lots of things. I'm particularly interested in the ability to run some useful utils that don't work on 2.1. See here: Froyo - CapFAQ

2.2 for the Captivate (USA) was never promised for September or any other date. People fell for rumors, guesses and gossip and started treating it like fact just because everyone else was repeating it.

Are you running Cognition, or another ROM?

I'm getting tired of waiting for Samsung and AT&T to release the update. When is the official update coming out in the US?

Well loads of people including me just got some weird text message saying there will be an update but I have no idea what to make of it and have been searching around for answers.

There is no official date for the AT&T release of 2.2 (FroYo). A quick search would have probably lead you to one of the other threads about this.

If you are tired of waiting for the official release, there are other ways to run FroYo on our phones right now. The sub-forum "All Things Root" MIGHT have some info on FroYo roms, but the better wealth of information is over at XDA Developers.

That being said, I'm hoping no one posts in here complaining about how long it is taking for an official AT&T FroYo release. Wait silently (because yammering doesn't speed up the release date), or run leaked/custom roms!

I know why they have not release android 2.2 yeat it because they what to get some sale in on the new wm7 phone that came out last week.

Its taking so long because it takes time for ATT no write out the good stuff in Froyo like tethering & wifi hotspots...

EXCELLENT! I'm so glad I happened to check back in this forum. This is great news for Captivate users. Froyo will fix almost all the worst issues, save for the file system samsung uses I guess. Will there be a OCLF for Froyo?
